Hi, David

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi Azure, and thank you, I really haven't had a lot of time to do much work on my profiles with school and the move to Hawaii.

David,

Thank you for contributing to the January 2022 Sourcerers Challenge! As you know, every source added to an unsourced profile improves our One Tree. Thank you for taking time from your own family history to help others.

Hi David, Like so many of us, I see that you are using Ancestry.com for a lot of your sources. Here is an easy and simple way to cite those sources. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Links_to_Ancestry

Hi David,

Thanks for having a Big Heart and adopting Orphan Profiles. You will want to read this After adopting orphans FAQ to understand what to do next and it explains the special attention those profiles need.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Hi David,

Thanks for all your work on WikiTree. I noticed that you have begun adding profiles for the pre-1700 ancestors you have found in your search. Congratulations on finding records back that far!

Since you are now back in the time period where many people can be descended from those ancestors, we need more details in your source area. As collaborative genealogists, we need to tell each other our sources so that we can work together to assess the relative reliability of the source and the evidence it contains.

The current Ancestry links that you are using aren't very useful for other researchers. There is a WikiTree Sourcerer app that can make citing Ancestry records easier. One of the options on the dropdown menu is to create citations that have stable links to the records, as well as the database information to help other members find the record in the future. The video on that space page I linked explains the app well.

I hope this helps,

Debi

Hi, David. I appreciate the enthusiasm you exhibited by noting your connection to your early ancestor Daniel Bedell, but the message boards on profiles will not be useful for genealogical discussion if every descendant added a note to the profiles of long-ago ancestors. WikiTree asks us to refrain from posting notes like that one on our ancestors' profiles, and suggests that we can instead use the text section of our profile pages to record ancestral connections of interest. Thanks!

PS - I use my WikiTree Family List (yours is under your McKinney-7460 tab) and Ancestor Explorer to help me keep track of the profiles of my early ancestors here in WikiTree.

David,

Please be sure to review the guidelines for Pre-1700 profiles. Note, in particular, checking for an existing profile before you create a new one and the information on sources. You can find more information in the Sources FAQ and project lists for reliable sources, such as United States Reliable Sources.

As noted in the Sources FAQ, just "ancestry.com" by itself is not a sufficient source on any profile.
