WikiTree Adoption Angels are volunteers who have taken on the mission of helping WikiTree members identify their unknown parents using DNA.

We have 2 types of Angels:

  • Family Finder Angels who work beside the applicant to help them find their family. They use documents and DNA to search. An understanding of how to use DNA in this work is required.
  • Mentor Angels who greet all applicants and help them get all the basics of their search figured out before a Family Finder works with them. They also help with WT profile set up.

If you would like to help seekers find their birth family, have signed our Honor Code, have 100+ contributions, and have been an active member of WikiTree for at least 3 months, click on "ANSWER"  to post below and we'll get you going!

We especially need Angels from around the world who understand how to use DNA in the process of finding birth family.

Hi, I’ve been working as a search angel for DNA detectives for the past while. I helped to locate 10 birth parents/grandparents. I’ve recently started getting into WikiTree. I’d love to be considered as part of the family finder project please. Thanks

I had answered the other one, but never received a response, so I'll reply here.  I would love to be able to pass on the assistance yall provided me to others. I love solving puzzles and now understand much better how the pieces fit together to help solve NPEs.

I would like to help others find their DNA ancestors as I have done for myself.  My uncle spent the last 40 years of his life trying to find out who his father (my grandfather) was.  He passed away without finding out.  After receiving my DNA results it took me several months to discover my grandfather had changed his surname and birth year to run away and join the Army.  I love a good mystery.

I have enjoyed the mystery of genealogy for my years now, taking over my wife's grandmothers family tree she started many years ago.

To date, I have successfully found four pairs of biological parents for adoptees, three related to my wife's side of the family and one pair related to my side of the family. Two of these cases were relatively straightforward based on family tree and DNA evidence, but the other two were multi-year endeavors.

I am familiar with much of the science behind DNA testing and have used GEDmatch, Ancestry, 23 and Me, Family Tree DNA, and myHeritage. I would be happy to try and assist individuals in search of their biological parents.

Hi Scott, sorry for the amended reply. I see you just joined WikiTree. Welcome! Because of the private nature of our work, we require members to be at WikiTree for at least 3 months and have 100+ contributions. Please check back with me in June.

I'd like to help out. I figured out through my own DNA that my mother's father was not her biological father and I was able to figure out who he really was. So exciting to tease the truth out of the data. I'd enjoy helping others.

I am actively making trees to connect my shared matches to my tree but keep finding lots of people with no apparent connection. However I have helped several friends figure out their bio connections.

Recently I started working on the Black Cemetery connected to our Pioneer cemetery and searching for info on people buried there with no markers. I am currently working with a lady who is looking for her grandfather. He disappeared between 1910 and 1917, but her dna test shows 7 close matches and 3 of those have the same last name that is not a name that shows up in her tree.

My questions about Adoption Angels.. Once we join to you send us names to look for? Is there a way to be able to see the "clients" info so that I can build something like the Leeds Method chart? I see on another post that you have a toolbelt, how canI get that info?
by Aurora Chancy G2G6 Mach 2 (28.3k points)

Hi Aurora, the "toolbelt" is more of a metaphor. We give tips and tricks to each other to help with the work, but we don't have any kind of training program since we haven't had enough Angels to do training plus help applicants. That's why we ask people to have DNA experience coming into the project.

Applicants send in an application, then an Angel will contact them to gather more information and get access to their DNA matches to complete the search.
Were you interested in joining the project?
yes, if I can be of help. I have a "cousin" right now Im trying to help but I cant see her matches so its tough.

So I have reached up to attempt joining numerous projects throughout my time here, And I've done some little dablings on them but I've never really been able to dive into it and truly do anything that I felt to be all that effective. This is something that I know beyond a shout of doubt I will prove myself to be very dedicated. I would find it to be an honor and a privilege to be able to help one of these people to discover their birth family and learn their heritage. This is beautiful work.

I have been searching for my birth family for years in Venezuela and Trinidad.  I do speak, read and write Spanish and English.  I can help with those needing information in Spanish.  Of course, I will help in general with anything.  I completely understand the struggles!
by Rene' Oliver Oliver G2G1 (1.2k points)
Hi René. We currently need a lot of help in Spanish! I've sent you a message.

I would love to help as a Family Finder Angel. I have had experience and helped people find answers with their DNA. I am currently studying a Cert of Genetic Genealogy to formalise my qualifications. My interest is in Australian and English records.

I would love to join as a Family Finder Angel.  I have over 25 years of genealogy experience and about eight years of genetic genealogy.  I have helped about 15 people find their biological parents.

It would be an honor to be accepted as a Search Angel and to assist adoptees in finding their birth families. I will work where I am needed, either as a "Family Finder Angel" or a "Mentor Angel." I have had personal experience in both.  I had the opportunity to assist a friend and a cousin in finding their biological families.
I am truly interested in assisting others.  There must be many adoptees who do not feel completed without the knowledge of their birth families.  Parents who had to give up their their babies must often think about their child.  Assisting families to find each other must be a great accomplishment.

I would love to become a Search Angel and assist adoptees in finding their birth families.  I have had some experience by assisting a friend and I also assisted  a cousin.  I believe I may have written to you earlier on this subject.

Emma, I have signed the Honor Code, I have over 100 contributions to the Wikitree, have been a member of wiki for over 3 months and I am familiar with DNA's.  I cannot say that I understand and can interpret DNA completely, but I do have some understanding and knowledge of it.

I would like to become a Family Finder Angel. I've had success solving adoption and NPEs for friends and in my own family. I already use the tools and processes described in your pages and look forward to helping others clear up their mysteries.

I am interested in helping adoptees to find their birth parents.  I have been researching genealogy for 30+ years, and working with DNA for 5+ years.  I have also helped one of my DNA matches to find their birth father.  I am also beginning the process of becoming a Certified Genealogist
