A New Gateway Ancestor: William Hoskins to King Edward I of England?

Hi fellow WikiTreers,

Sorry for a lengthy post here.  There has been a lot of great, new information added to the tree related to the Polden and Cheney families.  There have been visitations, wills, and a line has started to emerge starting from William Hoskins.

William Haskins was the son of Anne (Winthrop) Haskins, who was the daughter of Elizabeth Polden, and Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Polden and Dorothy Cheney.  Elizabeth's brother, Morgan, provided evidence of his kinship to Henry Lord Cheney of Tuddington.  Morgan asserted that his maternal grandmother, Mary Roberts, was the daughter of Thomas Roberts of Glastenbury.  2 Visitations of Kent (one in 1574, the next in 1619) show Thomas Cheney and wife Elizabeth Fremingham as having a daughter Mary.  Per the 1574, a snippet was posted on Geni and indicated that Mary Cheney married Cheney of Woodhey (since his will wasn't probated until 1582, wouldn't Thomas Roberts still be alive to see if a herald was recording his family correctly?)  The 1619 Visitation of Kent was even more specific, indicating that Thomas and wife Elizabeth's daughter was married to Tho Cheney de Woodhey.  This Visitation further reflects Jane Cheney's marriages to Richard Burston and then to Richard Lone/Love.  One of their daughters was a legatee in Thomas Roberts's will even while her mother Jane is not named.  I think there is sufficient reason to conclude that the Visitations correctly list Mary (Roberts) Cheney as the daughter of Thomas Roberts and Elizabeth Framlingham.  Elizabeth Framlingham is a descendant of King Edward I of England and his wife Eleanor of Castile.:  (Gen. 1-9 Source: "Genealogics")

Edward I, King of England=Eleanor of Castile

Elizabeth of England=Humphrey de Bohun

William de Bohun=Elizabeth Badlesmere

Elizbeth de Bohun=Sir Richard Fitzalan

Elizabeth Fitz Alan=Robert Goushill

Elizabeth Goushill=Sir Robert Wingfield

Anne Wingfield=John de Fremingham

Sir James Fremingham=Elizabeth Walworth

Elizabeth Fremingham=Thomas Roberts of Glastonbury

Mary Roberts=Thomas Cheney of Woodhey

Dorothy Cheney=Thomas Polden

Elizabeth Polden=John Winthrop

Anne Winthrop=Henry Hoskins

William Hoskins=Anne Hinds

Any corrections or replies?  And thank you again to all the WTers that have written such good profiles for the parties involved.

The William Hoskins profile linked to has no evidence for the currently attached parents or the place of birth.  The parents should probably be detached.  The "source" on the profile states : "Page 36 says the date and place of birth are unknown. No parents are given either."

Thanks for the comment-that's a definite problem with the line.  "The Great Migration" indicates that William was the son of Henry Hoskins and Ann Winthrop.  I had to open the link to "The Great Migration" book on Ancestry to read the details.  The profile in TGM for William Hoskins further highlighted that at least two of his children (John and Richard) are only possible links at this point.  I added "The Great Migration" as a source for William's parentage on his page.

The source connecting William Hoskins to Anne (Winthrop) Hoskins was on his mother's profile. I've added it to the beginning of William's profile and included a research note.

It's a 1638 letter written by Anne (Winthrop) Hoskins to her cousin John Winthrop (the younger) asking about her son William Hoskins (transcript here). By the letter's content, William likely left a number of years before then. Anderson only includes this single William Hoskins in the Great Migration series (at least up to 1635), and also cites the letter.

Thank you for posting about the Winthrop letter.

Just bumping this post since I’m interested to know myself. Does anyone know if Richardson or other experts have commented on the proposed line?

I haven't seen anything and hoped that putting it up here might lead to critique.  The line down to Elizabeth Framlingham is well-documented; visitations provide the evidence for the link between Mary Roberts and her parents, and the link between Mary and her daughter Dorothy Cheney and granddaughter Elizabeth Polden is well-sourced on WikiTree (wills, a detailed petition from Mary's grandson Captain Morgan Polden, visitations, etc.)  Anderson's "The Great Migration" indicates William Hoskins is the son of Henry Hoskins and Anne Winthrop.  Anne's letter to John Winthrop is presented in Anderson.  The line looks fairly strong and I hope some additional comments will result.  My descent from William Hoskins has a few other shaky areas-Anderson notes the following about Richard Hoskins being the son of William Hoskins: "The evidence is tantalizing but inconclusive."
