Can't edit or add family members

I joined recently but can't add any family members

When I click on father / mother I just get a message saying as a Guest Member I can't add anyone until my profile is confirmed

I have confirmed my email address

I also see the message

James Sullivan is a Guest Member with limited editing ability. They may just be exploring or using the genealogist-to-genealogist (G2G) forum. They will not become a full member unless:

  • They volunteer to do wiki genealogy (they have not yet volunteered), or ...
  • Wiki Genealogist volunteers to help them with their genealogy.

However when I go to the following page it won't let me tick the box to volunteer

Navigation Home Page

New Wiki Genealogist Checklist

You might just be exploring WikiTree, G2GGEDCompare, etc. as a Guest Member. We hope you also want to help grow our shared family tree. If so, here are the steps.

Unchecked Optional: Upload a GEDCOM.

If you have a GEDCOM you can upload it at any time for GEDCompare.

Checked Optional: Enter a DNA test.

Checked Confirm your e-mail address.

Unchecked Volunteer to help grow WikiTree.

What am I doing wrong?

Hello, James, and welcome aboard!

I see that Ellen and Steven's excellent answers helped you complete your membership.

This part of my comment is for whoever handles the design for the new-member checklist that James mentions in his question: the last item in the checklist should include the link to Volunteer!!

Other than that oversight, well done on the redesigned new-member guidance!
Thank you everyone my problem is sorted :)

The page https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Volunteers (there's a link in that message you quoted) explains what you need to do to "volunteer." Have you done those things?

See the information at: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Volunteers

How to Volunteer

First register as a Guest Member. Next you'll need to confirm your e-mail address.

Then you'll see a form on your profile page that invites you to volunteer to become a full member. Volunteering means that you want to help with the mission and plan to abide by the Wiki Genealogist Honor Code.

Submitting the form posts a note that Greeters will see. Once a Greeter confirms you as a full member you can sign the Honor Code and contribute as a Wiki Genealogist.

Why do you have to "volunteer" to be a member? Why can't you just join?

WikiTree members enjoy benefits that cost money on other websites — unlimited family profiles, unlimited photos, unlimited private family web pages, etc.

We do not have "premium" memberships. All WikiTree services are free.

In the past we allowed anyone to join. WikiTree ended up being abused by people who were taking advantage of the free services but didn't care about the mission. This hurt the community in many ways.

In order to always remain free we need to limit membership to those who want to help our mission to grow a shared family tree and want to abide by our community's simple Honor Code.

Here's how to do the Tags:

You may want to add some tags on your page indicating a family name for one tag and a specific location like a country, state etc you are interested in, for another tag and then add other surnames or locations as tags as desired. That way you will be connected to others with the same interest.

Click on http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:Following to add or remove tags. Be sure to add comments explaining why you're following the tags. Those appear on your profile too.
