Question

Would you like to start a Name Study for a surname in 2019?  Sign up below (answer, don't comment) and Ros will create the page for you and add you as the manager.  If you do not already have it, you will be awarded the One Name Studies Project Member badge.

Please note when requesting redirects to variants: There can only be three spellings of the surname per Study, and one of them must be the name itself (such as Haywood, Heywood, and Haywud for the Haywood Name Study).  This limit is posed due to limitations of the creation form plus lack of manpower.

Depending on your answer to my comment, I will answer the question. There is a Harrington Name Study, but the only thing in it is a sub-category, Cork, Harrington Name Study, which is for Harrington’s from County Cork, Ireland. I’d like to have a ONS for English Harrington’s. Should I just use the existing Harrington ONS instead of creating a sub-category  ONS called English Harrington Name Study?  I’m leaning toward using the existing study. No point in having a category that is too specific. Also, is there  anyone currently hosting the Harrington ONS? If not, I’ll do it. Thanks.

Hello Ross, I'm interested in four names (my grandparents and its ancestors):

• Vašut (female version Vašutová, possible version due to germanic occupation is Waschut)
• Židek (female version Židková, possible version Žídek)
• Drapa (female version Drapová)
• Kalus (female version Kalusová, possible version Kallus)

Note that for women, suffux "ová" is usually used (there are exceptions) in Czechia and Slovakia (and probably some other slavic lands.)

It is probably not a good idea to start off with four Name Studies.  A lot of people find that even one is a lifelong commitment.  Perhaps you would like to choose one or two of the surnames you have mentioned?

I am only thinking of you; I don't want to see you overwhelmed.

OK, then I would prefer names Vašut (obviously - my name  ) and Židek. 

I don't know how it works with administration of those studies. I assume that my administration duties can be shared or passed to another person if I wouldn't able to maintain it myself.

Anyway, at this moment I'm main contributor of those names and in near future I think there won't be any rush around those, so I think I would be able to handle all 4. But you are probably more experinced in this, so I will keep your advice.

EDIT: btw, when doing research on unindexed registers / censuses / ... or cemeteries, you usually meet more familiar names and it's a waste to keep focus only on 1 at the time. So keeping 4 in head is not so overwhelming.

I'm sorry, but I will have to turn down these requests.  Most genealogists find that doing one ONS is a lifetime endeavour, and since you have only been on WikiTree for under a year and have only just started your Neuvirth Name Study, I do not want you to get overwhelmed.  Get settled in with your first Name Study and run it for a few months, and then come back with further requests.

The Blockley Name Study was already in existence but did not have a freespace page, which is why I created it yesterday.  I am contacting the previous PMs  to see if they wish to continue.  I will get back to you with the result.

If they do not, I am afraid I cannot set you as its manager; that will make it so you have three Name Studies, which is too many for someone new to the Project.  Settle in with the other two for a few months; I do not wish you to become overwhelmed.

A subcategory such as England, Harrington Name Study should always fall within the Name Study itself.  Thus you should use the extant Harrington Name Study, rather than start up a new ONS with an incorrect heading.

If you want to start any more, please go through the correct channels and do not create an ONS on your own.  You have nested it in the wrong category tree and bypassed the indexing and recording system of the ONS Project. (There are a few background technical things which need to be done as well.) I will fix it for you later this evening.

Hi Ros. I would like to start a One Name study for Crooke. My husband and I both have Crooke in our trees - and some of them are related *gulp*. They are listed as Crook and Crooks in some census data - and, I don't know if it matters - they all seem to be in the Southeast (Alabama, Florida, Georgia). What do I need to do?

Well, you can remove the Project as a manager, but please don't remove it entirely from the Trusted List so we have access if the worst happens and you decide to leave WikiTree.
