It’s the Weekend, my fellow WikiChatterers, so let’s start the Chat! Greetings from Cathey’s Creek where the weather has finally cooled down to the high 60s and low 70s, at least for a while. I may be pleased, but my spouse is dreading the coming of winter. This is the season of complaints about us not living in Florida or southern Georgia. I am pulling out my winter clothe, but I am going to have to find some flannels with longer sleeves, being cursed with extra long arms… which reminds me…
There was a clothing store near where I grew up in the tiny town of Mt. Holly (North Carolina, not New Jersey). At Paul Derr’s, they used to call me the orangutan. Supposedly, finger tip to finger tip should be the same length as head to foot. Unfortunately, I have three extra inches with the former. My shirts have to be special ordered not only to fit my arms, but my longish torso. Regular length shirts pull out of my pants, and that gets embarrassing on occasion, depending on where this occurs. Grrr…. #1.
On the Home Front: NO, we are not done with the front yard yet. I think we wore ourselves out this summer, especially in the heat, so we having been taking it easier the past few weeks. We are looking into asphalting our driveway (gravel now). We are tired of standing water and pulling weeds.
We are having some concerns about my stubborn 92-year-old mother’s health. She’s always been small, but she has lost about 10 pounds over the past few weeks, down to 100, due to some stomach problems. She was taking medicine, (didn’t work) and she is being stubborn about going back to the doctor. Grrr… #2. Says she doesn’t like “young people” telling her what to do. (I took that as a compliment.) Did I say she’s stubborn? This is the woman who consistently votes with one political party that stands for nothing she believes in, saying it’s the way her parents voted. Grrr… #3. Gotta love her!
On the Genealogy Front: I’m on a bio-binge lately, though it takes several hours. Last week I shared that I often find someone who had no descendants and work up a bio for them so that they won’t be forgotten. So, I accomplished that for Landon Sebastian Patterson. This week, I needed help from this amazing community who has always come through. I started on Landon’s brother, John Houston “Johnny” Patterson. This gg-uncle has descendants, but I wanted to make sure his story was told, too. As far as I can tell, he had three or four children by his first wife, who died in the late 1910s. I’m pretty sure he lost one of those children early, too. He lived with another brother for a few years after his wife’s death, marrying again in the 20s, having a few more children. I lose him in the 1940 census.
In 1948, Uncle Johnny was murdered after an argument with another man, a regular shootout. I couldn’t read the death certificate well, and several community members answered my G2G post asking for help. Got that cleared up, so I moved to looking for assistance finding an article about the murder. Bingo! A community member came through again! The article was detailed, and the summary of it was a great addition to the bio.
So, a huge thank you to my WikiTree family for all the assistance on Uncle Johnny’s profile. Collaboration par ex.
Jump in and enjoy the Chat. I’m looking forward to Dorothy planning our menu each day this weekend!
