DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships by comparing test results with Byron or other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. Y-chromosome DNA test-takers in his direct paternal line on WikiTree:
  • Byron Carter: Family Tree DNA Y-DNA Test 700 markers, haplogroup I-M253, FTDNA kit #B194371
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Byron:

Bryon's Y DNA is listed as I-M253. The ancestors as listed on this profile trace back to Thomas Carter and Katherine Dale. This is in error. The Thomas Carter that married Katherine dale has a proven Y DNA line of R-M269. See the Y DNA info within the Carter DNA Project of Family Tree.

Hello,

I follow Carter postings on WikiTree and I am a descendant of Thomas Carter of Lancaster County VA through his 4th son Henry Skipwith Carter. I am also interested in the FamilyTreeDNA.com Carter Y-DNA Project. Several colonial Virginia Carter ancestors have descendants that have tested with FamilyTreeDNA and there are at least three groups that I am keenly interestsed in: 1. Thomas Carter of Lancaster Co. VA Haplogroup R1b-02 with 25 descendant members 2. John Carter of Lancaster Co. VA Haplogroup R1b-32 with 5 descendants, and 3. Thomas Carter of Isle of Wight VA Haplogroup R1b-04 with 15 descendants Others include Giles Carter of Henrico Co. VA, and William Carter of Middlesex VA Are you interested in testing Y-DNA or if you have already done so do you belong to any of the Y-DNA groups above? I am not familiar either about posting DNA information on WikiTree so will be interested in finding out how to do this. I don't find WikiTree to be very cyber-novice friendly but I am willing to learn. Robert Lumsden [email address removed]

Your message is 3+ years old, but I do have questions. My Y-DNA should be helpful to some extent in confirming or eliminating Carter lines. My Y-DNA line is: I-M253> DF29 >> Z60 >>FT8846 > BY194647 > BY51281 > FT8542. Considering this, there are some incorrect lines going to the Virginia Carters, who I believe are mostly Y-DNA of R-. I would love to figure out how to follow use the Y-DNA on Wikitree and follow lines correctly.

Byron,

You need to disconnect the line in your tree that shows a connection to Thomas Carter m Katherine Dale. Your pedigree as showing now suggests you are in the same line; however, we know this is incorrect because you are a completely different Haplogroup as you yourself acknowledge.
