Biography

John Hammond immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

John Hammond was baptized at Lavenham, Co.Suffolk, England on July 2,1626, and was the son of William Hammond and Elizabeth Paine Hammond. [1]

John first married Abigail Salter Hammond, the daughter of George Salter and Elizabeth (Munning) Salter of Dedham, Co Essex, England.

John and Abigail Hammond had, in Watertown:[2]

  • John, b. 3 Mar 1653-4 ("3: 12m: 1653" in old-style dating), died 1 Oct 1659
  • Elizabeth, b. 6 May 1655
  • Abigail, b. 21 June 1659, m. John Hastings, 18 June 1679

John secondly married Sarah (Sary) Nichols, in Charlestown, on 2 March 1663-4. They had the following children: [3][4]

  • Hannah (Hammond) Poulter, b. 10 April 1669
  • Sarah, b. ?, died 12 Sep 1674
  • Nathaniel Hammond, b. 25 July 1677, d. 18 Feb 1677-78
  • Samuel Hammond, b. 25 Feb 1679-80
  • Hephzibah (Hammond) Shattuck/Robbins, b. perhaps 1683, who m. William Shattuck on 23 Sep 1708, then John Robbins.
Sarah Nichols Hammond died 14 Jan 1688-9, ae 45. [5]

John married for a third time to Prudence (Wade) (Crosby) Cotton in Rowley, on November 7, ____, likely 1689 based on Sarah's death date.[6] Prudence had previously been twice married, first to Anthony Crosby, Jr. and secondly to the Reverend Seaborn Cotton. Although Prudence had at least two children from her first marriage, and her second husband mentions Prudence and her three sons in his will, there is no evidence that John and Prudence had any children, together.

John is buried in the "Old Burying Place" in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, Plot: 53. The inscription on his headstone reads,

Here lyes buried ye body of lieutenant JOHN HAMMOND aged 85 years & 4 mo who deceased novmbr 22nd 1709 blessed are ye dead that die in ye LORD

There is a photograph of his headstone available on his Find A Grave Memorial, which can be seen here: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=27162680&PIpi=25031907

Hammond-756 and Hammond-350 appear to represent the same person because: Hammond-350 is unowned and based on the data available, these are the same individual.
It is clear that something got mixed up during merges. This guy died while your, either in 1616 or 1620, but he is shown marrying several different women. I believe Hammond-358 was a son of the same name, born after the death of Hammmod-350. It is Hammond 358 who married these spouses. Unless you object, I will attach them to the other John Hammond.
