Biography

Flag of Derbyshire (adopted 2006)
John Joyce was born in Derbyshire, England.

John Joyce was born about 1615, probably in the vicinity of Mickle, Derbyshire, England.[1]

Alternate Date: ABT 1602[citation needed]

He married, probably there, Dorothy Cochet and went to New England.[1] The 1657 will of Robert Cochet of Mickel, Countie Derby, Gentleman, makes a bequest to "my sister Dorothy Joyce, wife of one John Joyce of New England, or to their children, if my sister, their mother, be deceased, the summe of five Pounds." [2]

He took the oath of fidelity from Sandwich, Massachusetts (at some unspecified time),[3] In 1637 he was among the first men who settled that town.[4] He was on the 1643 list of those 16 to 60 able to bear arms in Sandwich.[4] This same year, 1643, he removed to Yarmouth, Massachusetts. He was on the equivalent list in Yarmouth.[4]

He was named constable in Yarmouth, 1646, and remained there until his death 21 Dec 1666.[1][5]

John's will, dated 20 Nov 1666, mentions his wife Dorothy, only son Hosea and daughters Mary and Dorcas.[1][6]

His inventory was taken on the "eighteenth day of the 12th month 1666" and exhibited in Plymouth Court on 5 March 1666 on the oath of Hosea Joyce.[7]

As you can see from the new bio at the top of this profile, there is no mention of a marriage to Susanna prior to his marriage to Dorothy. There was a Susanna Joyce (see bio 2) who was widow of William Joyce in Connecticut. They also had a daughter Abigail. I think this is where to confusion comes from. I believe that Susanna and unknown attached here should be removed from John and merged with Joyse-5 (who also married Nicholas Hoyt.

If I hear no objections I will carry out this plan.
