Biography

I was born in New Zealand growing up in the town of Waipu. I am currently living in Ireland.

My ancestors immigrated from Europe mostly in the mid to late 1800's. The table below indicates the surnames of my immigrating ancestors, where they came from and what year they immigrated in. A lot of these families were involved in the creation of new settlements in New Zealand including Waipu, Puhoi and Maungaturoto.

Surname Origin Destination Year
Cullen Nottingham, England Maungaturoto, New Zealand 1863
Bowmar Nottingham, England Maungaturoto, New Zealand 1864
Baldock Lincolnshire, England Australia 1840
McKay Scotland via Nova Scotia Waipu, New Zealand 1851
Stewart Scotland via Nova Scotia Waipu, New Zealand 1857
Guntern/ren Switzerland via England New Zealand 1921
Atkinson Cumberland, England New Zealand 1921
Dodd Lancashire, England New Zealand  ?
Copley Yorkshire, England New Zealand 1862
Ramsbottom India (British Army) Australia / New Zealand 1854 (AU)
Morrow County Cavan, Ireland Australia/ New Zealand  ?
Mason County Down, Ireland Australia/ New Zealand  ?
Wech Bohemia Puhoi, New Zealand 1865
Wright Norfolk, England Tasmania, Australia/New Zealand 1835 (AU)
Green Norfolk, England Tasmania, Australia/New Zealand 1841 (AU)
Thomson Scotland New Zealand 1859

My ancestors were mostly farmers. Many left their home countries due to hard times or being evicted from their land. Two were convicts sent to Australia. There are also some sailors and members of the British army in India.

Brickwalls

George Wright & Sarah Green - This couple were both convicts sent to Tasmania who married there and immigrated to New Zealand. I have found the records and newspaper articles relating to their conviction and transportation but I have not been able to find either of the parents. They also apparently had more children but their children's births were not registered. George's death certificate lists his parents as Frank Wright and Alice Yaxley. Online trees have linked this to Alice Yaxley but she married Frank Cork before George's birth if George's age at various points is correct. DNA connects descendents of George to the Yaxley's so it is likely she is his mother.
George Rycall - George was a clerk for the British Army in India. He married an Indian woman. George was born in about 1786. I am unsure where. The Rycall surname seems uncommon and mostly pops up in India. He must have been white however as his children are recorded as half Indian. It's possible that Rycall is a mispelling of some other surname that his family used from the time they arrived in India.
Other brickwalls largely related to records for those towns not going back far enough or surnames being to common.

The last line of the first paragraph of your Brickwall comment on George Wright has an error. You state "it is likely that he is his mother." I suspect that would be highly unlikely. Cheers, Vaughan Niven.

Hi Paula - about your brick wall with George Wright, is this George Robert Nicol Wright, or is there another George? If it's GRN Wright, he is an ancester of mine and I can tell you quite a bit more about him. He doesn't hail from Norfolk, UK, though, he's the son of Charles Everard Nicol Wright from Fulham, London.

CHeers, Richard Harbroe Wright (UK)

posted by Richard Wright
Hi Richard, I don't believe so. George's mother was Alice Yaxley (tentatively confirmed by DNA matches). His father is recorded as Frank Wright in records but I have not found any confirmation of his existence and Alice Yaxley married Frank Cork while still having the Yaxley surname. George was sent to Tasmania due to stealing a cloak and later moved to New Zealand with his wife once their sentences had finished.
Paula Staunton is not only connected to me by my heritage (DNA), but she has been, and continues to be of great support to me in finding out where I came from and what makes me, me.

Thanks you Paula for your support.

Hi

Thanks for the improvements to my great-grandparent's profile Harry Stevens/Maud Smith, adding NZBDM and other sources (eg war records) to all family profiles is on the agenda, but I never would have thought of that probate file at Archives, I'll have to have a look at it.

Hi

I tried that Archives link, and I only get "internal error" message, any ideas?

Hi Paula, Death records are notoriously inaccurate. I don't think we will ever find an arrival as he likely jumped ship. The spelling of his middle name varies between Adolf and Adolph.

His baptism record is Otto Adolf Wiechern

The original copy of his marriage certificate shows him as Otto Adolph Wiechern and occupation as a farmer.

He was definitely a seaman, his naturalisation (10 Oct 1890) shows him as a mariner, and he has signed it as Otto Adolf Wiechern.

Electoral roll 1919, Central Wellington has him as Otto Adolph Wiechern

The death certificate and death notice definitely has the Herman, so perhaps it was a nickname?

Regards Greg

posted by Greg Wiechern
Hi Paula, I'm descended from the NZ Wiechern's who you have recently added. Otto Adolf Wiechern, my great grandfather, mysteriously has the name Herman added on many trees which is incorrect. I have been to Altona in Hamburg, Germany and viewed church records (in 1986) and there is no Herman on his records there. It appears that he arrived in NZ in 1878, so he would have been 17. I don't know whether we will ever find out how he arrived. Regards Greg Wiechern
posted by Greg Wiechern
Hi Greg, I ended up at the Wiechern's after working on Nordstrand's who are related to my Aunty. The middle name Herman comes from Otto's death registration so either the informant was wrong or he added another middle name later in life which is not impossible but I usually see it with common names or to differentiate from family members. Hopefully the passenger list will appear online (with correct spelling) one day and you'll solve the mystery of his crossing.

Hello Paula

You and my kids are a DNA match, via Ancestry.com. A 9cM match with one of them, 16cM with another. DNA confirms the documentary trail which has you and my kids as 5th cousins once removed, common ancestors being John BALDOCK & Sabina BEE.

I have a couple of online discussion groups for your BALDOCK & BEE lines. See:

Paula: Hello, trust you are coping with 'the pandemic'.

I have recently adopted a profile (Perfect-135, my wife's Great-grandmother) which you created in mid-2018. Thank you for starting the ball rolling. I would very much appreciate your advising me, if possible, of any sources you have found for dates, places and details, if any, for birth and/or baptism/christening of Emma Perfect. I regret to say that I've been totally unsuccessful in locating such source information and trust that you please may be able to help. My thanks in advance for any/all assistance you are able to provide. Stay well, stay safe. Best regards.....Phil (Grace-883)

Happy to merge info on Thomas McMurdo. It's guesswork as to his heritage, but I believe he is the son of Stephen McMurdo who married Agnes Faries in 1735, as Thomas and Marion Lorimer had a son Stephen in 1778 (possibly named after his grandfather).
