Biography

William Guinness was born in Ireland.

William Newton Guinness was born on 28 November 1810. He was the only son of William Lunell Guinness and Susannah Jane Newton.

He was the Rector at Collooney, County Sligo, Ireland.

William married Harriette Le Poer Trench (the only daughter of William Le Poer Trench and Sarah Cuppage) on 31 March 1835. Notice of their marriage was printed on page 3 of the Dublin Evening Packet and Correspondent dated 2 April 1835:

March 31, at Loughrea Church, by the Rev. John Le Poer Trench, the Rev. William Newton Guinness, only son of William Lunnell Guinness Esq., Mountjoy-square, the city of Dublin, to Harriette, only daughter of the Hon. William Le Poer Trench, Dalystown, in the county Galway.^[1]

They had a son William Trench (b. 2 Nov 1836, d. 8 Feb 1918) and two daughters Sarah "Zara" Anne Newton (b. abt. 18 Jun 1838, d. 12 May 1883) and Harriet Ellen (b. 28 Nov 1839, d. 22 Jan 1931).

Sadly his wife Harriette passed away in 1839, soon after the birth of their third child.

He married, secondly, Elizabeth Perceval (the eldest daughter of Colonel Alexander Perceval) on 7 August 1844 at Rathbacon Church. Notice of their marriage was printed on page 3 of the Dublin Evening Packet and Correspondent dated 10 August 1844:

Aug. 7, in Rathbacon Church, by the Venerable Marcus Beresford, Archdeacon of Ardagh, the Rev. William Newton Guinness, to Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Alexander Perceval, Esq., of Templehouse, in the county of Sligo.^[2]

Unlikely they had children together. His second wife Elizabeth died in June 1845.

His third marriage was to Harriette Frances Day (the daughter of Revered Edward Day) on 24 February 1852 in St. John's, Sligo, Ireland^[3]. Notice of their marriage was printed on page 6 of the Cambridge Chronicle and Journal dated 6 March 1852:

February 24, at St. John’s, Sligo, the Rev. William N. Guinness, vicar of Ballisodare, to Harriette Frances, second daughter of the Rev. Edward Day, rector of St. John's.^[4]

They went on to have about eight children, some of whom died young.

William and Harriette emigrated from Ireland to Australia with their young children. They departed from Liverpool, England on 20 July 1855 and arrived into Hobson's Bay, Melbourne on 17 October 1855 on the ship Shalimar, under Captain A. Robertson^[5].

They had six more children after their arrival.

In Australia, William was appointed the Rector at Christ Church, South Yarra, Melbourne, Victoria.

He and his wife returned to Ireland where he passed away on 5 April 1894. The following was printed on page 3 of the Sligo Independent dated 14 April 1894:

COLLOONEY.

FUNERAL OF THE LATE REV W N GUINNESS. -- On Monday last the remains of the late Rev. William Newton Guinness, formerly rector of the parish of Ballysodare, were conveyed from his late residence, Mountjoy-square, Dublin, to Collooney, and placed in the family vault in Collooney Churchyard. The funeral arrived by train at Collooney Station at 2.30 p m, where it was met by a large number of people - friends, parishioners, and general public - who testified to their great esteem for the memory of the deceased. The coffin was borne from the station to the church on the shoulders of the young men of the parish, who seemed to vie with each other in their anxiety to do honour to their former friend and pastor.

The officiating clergyment were the Ven. Archdeacon Kearney, Rev W A Day, and Rev Samuel Johnston. At the conclusion of the service in the church the choir sang, "Now the Labourer's task is o'ver," hymn 599.^[6]

Among the mourners were Mr Trench Guinness, Mr Ernest Guinness, Mr Howard Guinness, Mr Jerrold Guinness and Reverend W A Day.

His Will was proved at Dublin to his eldest son William Trench Guinness^[7]. Effects £600 in England. Sealed London 18 October 1894.
