Narrative 1

William Chapman was born between 1626 and 1638 and died on before 18 Dec 1699 in New London, New London, CT [5][11].

The following narrative is taken from: Known Descendants of William Chapman b. ca 1633 England May 2008 Version, branch manager Ed Krimmer. This narrative will be updated as better/newer source materials are found.

William Chapman b. 1633, England,[12]

William Chapman married:

(1) BEF 1650, in England,[13] Sarah Lidia, b. ABT 1600, England,[14] ref: JMC JOH M DM, d. UNKNOWN.

(2) 6 Oct 1677, Elizabeth Palmer, (daughter of Walter Palmer and Rebecca Short ) ref: JOH BRS.

William died before 18 Dec 1699, New London, New London, CT,[15] buried: UNKNOWN, New London, New London, CT.[16]

It is not known from whence William came. He appears first on the New London records, in 1657. At a town meeting, Aug 25,16 91, it was "voated that whe reas William Chapman had formerly allowed him by the town three pounds for his sexton's place by the year, they now add forty shillings more and order him five pounds per year for sweeping the meeting house and gallerys and ringing the bell". The comments above are a part of the introductory comments included in Rev. F. W. Chapman's 1854 account of the family. He did not provide the names of any prospective parents or wives. Sources for that information need to be reviewed and documented . The "LDS" sources cited were added by John M. Chapman in one of his efforts to expand this data. While these may be valid we know the LDS-IGI does contain much error so we need to search out the IGI source record to validate it. The names of all the children were found in the will and the years of birth were provided in the original account unless shown as estimated (est) or otherwise noted. The source of the parents names is unknown. New London, CT is/was a city, township and county. It was established as one of the original counties of CT in 1666. Keep in mind that most public records were maintained by the town, which was the township rather than the city or the county. Few sources have made it clear which "New London" they referred to so all of our New London records just show "New London, CT." Investigate further at the probable source if it is important. The association has a collection of several family group records from various sources that are going to be integrated into this record. The source of the record along with their "Chappie" reference is listed below. If and where their data is used their reference will be cited as the source. Where they cited specific sources the association needs to follow through to investigate and obtain copies. BRS Beth R. Smith has several "numerical" references that are meaningless without her sources. CCK Colin C. Kelley citing "Beers Gen. & Biog. Records New London Co ., CT 1905 JM C John M. Chapman (deceased) JOH John Henderson submitted an exhaustive report on early New England Chapmans, particularly this branch. MDM M. D . Chapman Morgan: "Chapman Family (GSer 929.273 C366cf) [probably Rev F. W. Chapman's work] and "Savage Genealogical Dictionary." MJS M. J. Sanborn Lewis. Some sources cited but not legible. Ray Ray Chapman citing no sources RSK Wilma Rusk family group records- no sources listed. RTJ Rhoda T. Jennings family group sheet came from Glenn C. Osborne who cited William's will, Rev. F. W. Chapman's 1854 book and "town records." RRH

Narrative 2

William Chapman first appears in 1657, when he bought the Dennison house-lot on Hempstead Street. New London, New London, CT, nearly opposite the jail.[17]

What is known is that William Chapman bought the Denison house lot in 1657, situated on what is now Hempstead Street in New London. Rev. F. W. Chapman recounted a deed of William Chapman's, dated 1663, as:

"William Chapman hath given him thirty ackers of upland bounded towards the south with Mr. Douglas his land, and towards the east with the small brook that leads the north with Arkuabukie* Meadow, and towards the west with a ledge of rocks and a tree marked on four sides."

  • F.W. Chapman included a note that there was some doubt about the orthography of this word.

On August 25, 1691, it was voted at a New London town meeting that: "whereas William Chapman had formerly allowed him by the town three pounds for his sexton's place by the yeare, they now add forty shillings more and order him five pounds per year for sweeping the meeting house and galleries and ringing the bell."

There appears to be no information on the ancestry or origins of William Chapman Sr. of New London, nor is the name of his wife known. The names of his children do not appear in New London town records and are known only by William Chapman's will, written April 1, 1696 and proved January 10, 1699. Genealogist F.W. Chapman concluded that William Chapman of New London was probably not a kinsman of Robert Chapman of Saybrook.[18]

The children named in his will were: John, William, Samuel, Jeremiah, Joseph, Sarah and Rebecca

What is known about the Chapmans of New London is that they intermarried with many of the early families of New London County: the Allyn, Ames, Avery, Ayers, Bill, Button, De Wolfe, Eddy, Hale, Heath, Jewett, Leffingwell, Lester, Rouse, Spicer, Stark, Stoddard, Tabor, Taylor, Thurber, Waterman and Wentworth families. They farmed the land, as did most of their townsmen, they served in various capacities in the military, and they were involved in town and religious affairs.

I hope nobody objects to my removing Alexander Chapman as father of William. He shouldn't have been connected in the first place and it's been an unresolved issue here since 2019.

William's parentage is unknown.

Good point. I was working on WHICH Samuel Chapman was the right one, and didn't notice the dates for the father/son. Presumably something is wrong here, but it was not the problem I was working on......
If his son was born in 1689, it seems unlikely that William Chapman would have been born in 1616 and age 73 when his son Samuel was born. Please check your dates.
