Marie Blanchan, daughter of Mathieu Blanchan (aka Matthew Blanshan), a Huguenot (Protestant) from Noeuville-au-Corne, Ricame, Artois, France, was born in Armentieres, in the province of Flandres francaises (Arrondissement de Lille), in March 1640. At the time, the town was under the rule of the Roman-Catholic Spanish Hapsburg dynasty. With increasing persecution of French Huguenots by both the Hapsburgs and the French monarchy (Louis XIII), the Blanchan family soon fled to Mannheim, a Protestant-held city in Baden-Wurttemberg (Germany). There, on January 13, 1660, Marie (aka Maria) Blanchan married Antoine (Anthony) Crispell, also a French Huguenot, originally from l'Artois province (Nord-Pas de Calais), France.
Anthony and Maria Crispell left for the New World on April 27, 1660 in "De Vergulde Otter" ("Gilded Otter"). They landed at New Amsterdam in New Netherland. Many French Huguenots settled in this Protestant-led Dutch colony. First going to Esopus, now part of Kingston, NY, the Crispell family settled in nearby Hurley. On June 7, 1663, when the Indians destroyed the village, his wife and infant daughter (Marie-Magdalene) fled. Anthony was captured by the Indians, but was soon released. The next year, the entire province was taken over by the English from Dutch rule.
Anthony & Maria (Blanchan) Crispell had the following children:[1]
Maria died about 5 years after Jan's birth in Hurley, Ulster, New York. Anthony then re-married to Petronella leMan (or deMond) in about 1680.
Antoine Crispell's will was dated November 6, 1707, probated June 10, 1708 in Curacao, D.W.I. [Dutch West Indies]. He is said to have died in New Palz, New York, where he and his 2 wives are buried with a memorial plaque.[2][3]
