WARNING: It is highly likely the father of William Charles CRIBB is actually Richard Skuthorpe junior and not his father Richard senior. DNA evidence is being collated. Please contact Veronica Williams for more information.

William Charles CRIBB.[1]
William was born in the North Richmond area on 1 February 1849 to mother Jane Cribb (nee Hewitt). James Cribb was named on the birth certificate as the father of William but he died in 1841 before William was born. It is understood his mother refused to name the father of her last three children, all born after her husband had died. Interestingly, the bulk of his mothers estate went to William, her last born illegitimate son. An alternate record in the name of Skewthorpe has also been found.[2]
A baptism was recorded at Lower Hawkesbury, County of Cumberland for a William Charles CRIBB. It lists his birth date as 1 Feb 1849 and baptism date as 10 Sep 1849, parents Jane CRIBB and Richard SKEWTHORPE. Residence is stated to be Upper Colo. It is presumed the parents were not married at the time. [3]
As a young man William Charles was involved in cattle stealing in the Hawkesbury area and in May 1872 was sentenced for a period of 2 years, with hard labour, to Parramatta Gaol. This was with a person by the name of George FARLOW (m Sarah Skuthorpe), probably the husband of his niece and daughter of his half sister Mary Ann CRIBB. NOTE: If the father being Richard SKEWTHORPE is correct, then Sarah would also be his niece from half brother Thomas SKEWTHORPE (husband of Mary Ann).
He is described as having dark brown hair, brown eyes, 5 feet 8 and three quarter inches tall, with long features.
From 1874 to 1876, his mother held the licence for the "Travellers Rest" at North Richmond, where it is believed he was involved in the business, later continuing in the hotel business at Homebush at the Horse and Jockey Hotel.
On 12 July 1876 he married Esther Mary HERPS at Sydney, New South Wales, a local Hawkesbury girl and moved to the Sydney area. [4]
They had at least six children together.
By 1883 he is working at Homebush as a butcher.[5]
William died on 18th January 1932 at his home at 8 Bridge Street, Lidcombe. He was buried on 19 Jan 1932, in the Church of England Section at Rookwood Cemetery.[6]

Obituary of Mr William Charles Cribb, Sydney Morning Herald Feb. 1, 1932
Mr William Charles Cribb, who died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs Griffiths at Lidcombe recently, at 84 years of age, was a native of the Hawkesbury River, and was engaged in pastoral pursuits for many years. Later he managed a butchery business, and subsequently was in charge of hotels at Richmond and Homebush. At both centres he was associated with many public movements, and at Lidcombe he was a leading supporter of the Church of England. He is survived by four sons and a daughter. The funeral took place at Rookwood Anglican Cemetery
Initially it was unclear whether his father was Richard Skuthorp snr or his son Richard 'Middle Dick' Skuthorp jnr, both are appropriate ages, with Jane somewhere between the two. It seemed reasonable to assume if Jane’s daughter Mary Ann CRIBB married Thomas Skuthorp she may have had an encounter with a relative of her son in law (she was in between the ages of his father and his brother). Both of their wives are still alive in 1848, but Richard senior was known to have moved about between Richmond and Parramatta, as he was a District Constable. He was initially attached as the father, given he is the more likely of the two. Jane left most of her estate to William Charles, the 10th of her children, could this have been due to support she had received from Richard?
The baptism certificate named his father as Richard Skuthorpe. It had been assumed that Richard senior was more likely than his son also named Richard (known as 'Middle Dick') . However, DNA evidence now suggests that Richard junior is more likely, however this evidence needs further analysis at the chromosome level. Ongoing DNA research seems to indicate that descendants have connections with ancestors of Eleanor Connor, mother of Richard junior suggesting the father is in fact 'Middle Dick' and this has now been updated.
