Biography

Early Life

Rosamond Walling was the daughter of Joseph Walling and Millicent Jones.[1][2] She was most likely born between 1777-1780. There are conflicting records concerning the exact date as explained in the Research Notes below. She was born in Virginia, most likely in Montgomery County on the southwestern frontier, where her father and many related Wallen families moved from Pittsylvania County between 1770-1775[3] and where her father obtained a land grant in 1777.[4] By 1787, her father had obtained a North Carolina land grant in what was then Sullivan County. This area was ceded to Tennessee in 1790 and later became Hawkins County, Tennessee.[5]

Marriage

Rosamond Wallen married Thomas W. Weddle, most likely in Hawkins County, Tennessee.[6] She was one of three Walling sisters in this family that married Weddle brothers. The marriage of Thomas and Rosamond likely occurred in about 1796 based upon their ages and the date of birth of their first known child Nancy in 1797. Shortly after their marriage, Thomas and Rosamond settled in Lee County, Virginia, in the far southwestern corner of Virginia along the Tennessee border. Thomas appears on the tax lists of Lee County beginning in 1799,[7] and later census records report that their first child Nancy was born in Virginia.[8] As explained in more detail in Thomas' profile, this family and related Weddle and Wallen families appear to have moved back and forth between eastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia between the 1790s-1810s.[9] By 1815, Thomas and Rosamond Weddle were living in Scott County, Virginia, which was carved out of Lee and Washington Counties in 1814. Thomas appears on the tax lists in Scott County, Virginia, from 1815-1819.[10]

From Virginia to Indiana

Soon after that, Thomas and Rosamond Weddle took their family north from Scott County, Virginia, to Indiana, along with many other Weddle and related families who migrated from Tennessee and Virginia to Indiana around that same time. Thomas appears as the head of his household in Jackson County, Indiana in 1820.[11] By 1830, this family appears in Monroe County, Indiana.[12] Brown County was carved out of Monroe in 1836, and Thomas W. Weddle is listed as one of the earliest settlers in the area which later became Jackson Township, acquiring a tract there in 1836.[13][14]

Later Life

Her husband Thomas died in Brown County, Indiana, in 1838.[15] Rosamond appears twice in the 1850 census, living in the households of two of her children (Stephen and Daniel).[16][17] The later of these two census counts occurred on November 20, 1850.[16]

Death

Rosamond most likely died not long after that census was taken on 20 November 1850. Her modern gravestone indicates that it was in 1850.[18]

Research Notes

There are conflicting original birth records of Rosamond (Walling) Weddle, which have caused researchers to provide inconsistent birth dates for her. These are (1) an old Wallen record book discovered in the 1950s in the papers of Thomas J. Wallen, a great-grandson of James Carr Walling (Rosamond's brother); (2) the 1881 diary of David D. Weddle, Rosamond's son; and (3) entries for Rosamond in the 1850 census. The old Wallen record book gives a birth date for Rosamond of April 2, 1777.[6] The D.D. Weddle diary gives a birth date of February 22, 1780.[1] The February 1780 date is the one reflected on Rosamond's modern gravestone.[18] Rosamond appears twice in the 1850 census (in the households of her sons Daniel and Stephen), and both entries imply a birth year of about 1773.[16][17] Based on all of this, the birth year is estimated at 1777 for the purposes of this profile.

The D.D. Weddle diary also states that she was born in "Grason Co, VA" [sic], most likely referring to Grayson County, Virginia.[1] However, Grayson County was not formed until 1792. It is located in an area that was part of Montgomery County in 1777, so it may be that Rosamond was born in that part of Montgomery County.

Thank you for adding a DNA confirmation statement to this profile. Please read these details from the triangulation instructions which explain that you cannot mark the relationship to the MRCAs ‘confirmed with DNA’: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Triangulation#Do_you_include_the_MRCA.3F (Her parents are the MRCAs.)

I’ve changed the ‘confirmed with DNA’ entries on this profile to ‘confident’ for you. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

What is the basis for the "M.D." suffix? It seems unlikely that she actually had a post-graduate medical degree.

Good question Scott! I went to my tree on MyHeritage and looked up source citations to find out. It appears in a smart match from 16 Jan 2016 from the Geis Web Site. The other smart match does not have it.

I also looked her up on Find A Grave which doesn't say anything about it either. Her bio shows she had at least 10 known children so I really doubt she was an M.D.

Hello Ross Holman,

Would you consider changing the last name at birth from 'Wallen' to 'Walling'? Just a thought since the majority of the family is spelled that way.

Thanks, Cindy Williams Lesure
