Biography

Jan Huygen came from a prominent family in Wesel. In 1608 he married Sybilla Raet, daughter of Arndt Raet. Her sister Gerdrudt married Peter Minuit. After Peter Minuit took his leadership role in the New Netherland colony, he arranged for his brother-in-law to come to the colony as the storekeeper, and also to serve as a sieckentrooster or krankenbezoeker. This position, roughly translated as seeker-out of the sick, was a combination lay preacher and male nurse. This was a recognized ecclesiastical office in the Reformed Church, permitted to hold church services, lead psalm singing, to perform marriages and baptisms, and read spiritual texts and commentaries to the people, but not allowed to administer Holy Communion.[1][2] Jan Huygen was examined April 2, 1625, and approved by the Consistory of Amsterdam for services in New Netherland. He probably traveled to New Netherland on the Arms of Amsterdam with de Rasiere, arriving July 28, 1626.[2]

His emigration to New Amsterdam in the ship "Seagull" landed 4 May 1626 on Manhattan Island. He became "Koopman" or keeper of the stores in the fort which guarded the settlement of 30 rude houses of bark. It is stated that Jan and Peter were Wallons [sic] (Belgians) and spoke and wrote only in French. Jan served as lay reader in Church services.[3]

Name

Jan "Huijke" or Huygen or Huyck

Immigration

On May 4, 1626, 30 families, including Johannes and Lisabeth Huyck, arrived in the New World. Many of the families were Walloon, from the French/Flemish border. It has been stated that both Peter and Johannes spoke and wrote French only. Although the expedition was Dutch, the first colonists were Dutch Huguenots who had gone to the Netherlands for religious freedom. [3]

Second Marriage and Later Death

Jan Huijgen married Lisabeth Peters as his second wife, date and place uncertain. He died before 5 July 1657, when Lisabeth Peters and Dirk Weijerts registered their intentions of marriage in the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam; the record of their intentions identifies her as the widow of Jan Huijgen.[4]

Some histories and genealogies have mistakenly identified Lisabeth as a sister of Peter Minuit. This theory may have originated with Cuyler Reynolds.[5] This mistake may derive from sources that indicate that Jan Huyck was a brother-in-law of Peter Minuit, which information was interpreted to mean that the wife of Jan Huyck was a sister of Pieter Minuit. To the contrary, Jan Huygen and Peter Minuit were brothers in law because they married sisters. Jan Huygen married Sybilla Raet, daughter of Arndt Raet, and Peter Minuit married Sybilla's sister Gerdrudt Raet.[6]

Death

Died 1657 in New York
