Biography

Mary Bryan and her twin brother, Lewis Bryan, were born on 4 Nov 1745 in Lewiston, Bertie, North Carolina. Their parents were possibly William Bryan and Elizabeth Smith.

If so, her maternal grandfather was John Smith. One of his land investments would have a significant bearing upon the founding of Smithfield, Johnston County, North Carolina.[1] He lived and died in Hawkins County, Tennessee, as did Thomas Lee. Yet, Mary and Lewis are not mentioned as John Smith's grandchildren in his eastate settlement. [2]

She may have married Thomas Lee as his 2nd wife on 15 Mar 1761.[3] Together they possibly had children :

  1. James Bryan Lee 1768 – 1837 born in Prince Edward, Virginia.
  2. Mary Lee Griffin, Wife of Jones Griffin, Born 1794 Tenn - Died 1876 Ala. (needs to be verified)
  3. Thomas Lee b. 1760-1761 (not listed in the suit in Chancery Court of Hawkins County, Tennessee)[4]
  4. Samuel Lee born about 1770[5]

Mary Bryan Lee died in Lee Valley, Hawkins, Tennessee. [10] Headstone of her daughter reads:

Chancery Court Litigation

On 23 May 1823, Thomas Bailey filed a suit in Chancery Court of Hawkins County, Tennessee challenging the administration of Mary's estate.[5] In this lawsuit, the orator's bill identifies the "children nine in number" who were to receive equal shares of Mary's estate as the "lawful heirs of her body" pursuant to her will as follows:[6]

In 1823 situ

  • Henry Rains (Henry is his paternal grandfather's 1st name)
  • Needham Lee (Needham is his maternal ggrandfather's 1st name: Needham Bryan)
  • John Lee (his paternal grandfather's 1st name)
  • Winifred Bailey
  • Zilpha Bailey
  • William Lee (William is his maternal grandfather's 1st name: William Bryan)
  • Edward Lee
  • James Lee
  • Mary Griffin, wife of James Griffin

These nine children listed in 1823 all belong to just one mother.

DNA Information

It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary: Richard Arwood has a GedMatch on 2 chromosomes with Kieth Bryant and estimated number of generations to MRCA = 4.1 comparing Kit PD8312844 (*Chief Arwood) [FTDNA] and Kit PY1842148 (Keith Bryant) [Ancestry]

Sheila Renee Curtis and Karen Brubaker have shared DNA: 13cM across 2 segments which makes them 5th to 8th cousins through their maternal parent on Ancestry.com. They both have trees with ancestors up to Henry Rains (1767 Johnston County, North Carolina - 1838 Yellow Creek, Knox, Kentucky, United States).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her ancestors' mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

Tombstone inscription - what exactly is the tombstone inscription (word for word) being referred to on the Find a Grave commemorative page for Mary Bryan Lee?

I think Mary Bryan (1745-1821) was the second wife of Thomas Lee from when they married in 1761. I don’t believe Thomas Lee had two wives (Mary Bryan d. 1721 and Mary Ingram d. 1721) at the same time. I have a new thought after seeing this: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ingram-1738#Chancery_Court_Litigation.

Karen,

Is there any source for the claim the marriage of Thomas Lee and Mary Bryan other than the Ancestry "U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900" database? That is not a reliable source -- you can read why on this G2G thread. It is just a compilation of family data sheets, which may or may not be based on reliable sources. We know from the Chancery Court litigation that Needham, John, Winifred, Zilpha, William, Edward, James, and Mary were all the children of Thomas Lee and the Mary he was married to at the time of his death. Mary Ingram, daughter of Richard Ingram, is identified in Richard's 1781 will as Mary Lee, which is the basis for the somewhat speculative claim that Thomas's widow Mary was née Mary Ingram -- but is there any reliable source at all for the claim that he was married to a Mary Bryan? I have not been able to find any yet.

I have not seen any reliable source (like a marriage record) for Mary Bryan as the wife of Thomas Lee. I have put the sources on her profile for claims that they were married. Thank you, Karen.

On the one hand, we have another refutation that this Mary Bryan ever married (Captain) Thomas Lee.

Bryan, William - DAR Ancestor A016287: William Bryan was Mary Bryan's father, but Error in Lineage: DAUGHTER MARY DID NOT MARRY THOMAS LEE & WAS NOT THE MOTHER OF ANY OF HIS CHILDREN. See DATACF. 1/2019.

One possible lead COULD be that she married a different Thomas Lee (see the Research Notes for his will), whose will was proved in Edgefield, South Carolina. Thomas Lee was a common name in this cohort. See the additional comment that presumptively, a different Thomas H Lee of Nansemond, Virginia (or his father, John, was of Nansemond), was the spouse of Mary Bryan.

The FindAGrave memorial has an interesting note stating that Mary Griffin was (Captain) Thomas Lee's 1st wife, Mary Bryan his 2nd, and Mary Ingram Rains his 3rd, citing a book: Rains, David S. Henry Rains 1767-1838: The Rains Family of Yellow Creek, Kentucky. 2002. IUniverse, Inc. The book might be a good source, given that the wives of Captain Thomas Lee are apparently discussed.

Henry Rains left North Carolina about 1780, for what became Tennessee, with his mother, Mary Ingram, and his stepfather Captain Thomas Lee. Henry Rains settled on what was then Indian land in the Yellow Creek Valley before 1790.

I see it as being a "comment" not refutation that this Mary Bryan ever married (Captain) Thomas Lee. For sure Thomas Lee had only one wife for the Lee children listed in: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ingram-1738#Chancery_Court_Litigation.

I am from Mary Bryan who married Thomas H Lee, he is not Thomas Greenberry Lee. Thomas H. Lee was son of John Lee of Nansemond Co, VA.

What is Thomas H Lee Wiki ID? I am trying to get this all straightened out and accurate. :)

What does the H stand for?

Also Sadie, do you have any information on the vital dates of Thomas H Lee, or where he died?

A birth date (Bryan-1224 born 4 Nov 1745) should not be within eight months of a sibling's birth date (Bryan-2065 born 24 Nov 1745) unless they are twins born within a day of each other.

All references to the Alabama, Surname Files Expanded, 1702–1981 need to be removed from this line of Lee's. The writer f that document has also mingled the 2 Thomas Lee's together.

no I am not speaking of Needham. I am speaking of the profile where I wrote the message. Surely you get a link to the profile when you get the message ??? I thought your approval was needed because you were the one that wrote a message about the conflict. I don't know of a way where I can see which PM has not approved the merge ... if you know how, please share how to do that. Thanks

conflicts have now been resolved and the merge can go through

Loretta, can you please approve the merge now so we can start to clear up the multiple wives. Thanks
