Margarett LeCraw, married John STANLY (STANLEY) on 5 Feb 1756 in Marblehead, Essex,Massachusetts[1]Noted: Marriage record reflects Margarett LeCraw of Marblehead, Mass. V.R.; 5 Feb 1756 [2][3]

"Margaret LeCroix was one of the Arcadians [sic] driven from their homes in Nova Scotia by the British. She and John Stanley had their home on a point of land on Little Cranberry Island ( Isleford ). Each Mayday a maypole was erected on the point for the pleasure of their children. It became an established custom as the years went by and that point of land is still known as the Maypole, or Maypole Point.”"[7] "... Many, many years ago, as I guess I once mentioned, a Maypole was put up on Little Cranberry Island near the point, which still bears that name. This custom according to history and legend, was begun by a beautiful French lady, Marguerite (LaCroix) Stanley, the wife of John. They were our first permanent settlers." [8]

Islesford Museum, Little Cranberry Island, Maine "Incidentally, the Hearth stones in the Pioneer's Room of the Collection are those of John and Marguerite. They were discovered several years ago, carefully removed and built into the Fireplace where they remain an interesting memento of early days."”[9]

Research Notes

Calico Bush by Rachel Field , the Macmillan Co. 1931. Calico Bush is a fictional story inspired by the stories told about of my five times great grandmother, Marguerite LaCroix or LeCraw. The stories of Marguerite LaCroix Standley and the Maypole, told to her during her visits to Maine, were used for inspiration by Rachel Field in her fictional story Calico Bush and in the poem, "Maypole Point". Response to Private Message received Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at 05:40:17 AM EDT I find, in a Maine Pension record for Peter Dolliver, Margarette's Son-in-law. Record dated '"twentieth day of July 1820, reflecting Margarette as '"age 83."' The above information is from Oath sworn before Mason Shaw, clerk of the Circuit Court of Common Pleas, County of Hancock, State of Maine. This gives her a date of birth about 1837. Thus she is not Margarette, christened 13 July 1733.

Cindy's research notes (temporary - do not delete them yet) Looking at the sources on this profile:

  1. Marcel W Landry does not have Marguerite as a child of Thomas and Louise Dupuis. http://mwlandry.ca/genealog/getperson.php?personID=I1022&tree=03 Landry is a respected Acadian researcher but does not often supply his sources on his webpapges.
  2. Landry has children born in Sept 1732 and before 1734 census which makes it difficult, but not impossible to have another child born July 13, 1733
  3. Marcel does have an unknown child born before the census of 1734. and after the one born Sept 1732. This one had no known FIRST name, was a girl, and no specific birthdate; that census did not give names. But it also means he did not find a baptism or other record to substantiate a name for that girl.
  4. On the list of births at Louisbourg here a Marguerite was baptized with no last name (no parents given) but . . .
  5. Looking at records in Louisbourg, on the July baptisms, I could find the one before it on July 12 for Foght and another on the next page for Klem, but could not find the one for Marguerite no last name on July 13 nor could I find Hovequen. Bottom of page 6 and top of 7, none inbetween as would have been expected. Using the first birth source provided http://anom.archivesnationales.culture.gouv.fr/caomec2/osd.php?territoire=ILE%20ROYALE&commune=LOUISBOURG&annee=1733&typeacte=AC_NA. Is there a different source for births in Havre St. Esprit (as given in this list?
  6. Checked the full year 1733 in the Louisbourg register and found no baptism for Marguerite Milly or LaCroix. There was another child Milly born to Francois Milly.
  7. There was a son of Thomas and Louise who died (see p 4 of the 1733 register) and his name was clearly Milly. I would expect that it was used for the other children as well but haven't checked their records, though that is not hard and fast; it isn't always true that the same name is used for all children.
  8. then there is this entry for the Fortress of Louisbourg with Marguerite no last name, Pierre Guyot and xx Baudry on July 13. Have not found that record. I would expect that child to be a daughter of Guyot even though her last name might not have been written in the side entry. What's in the body of the entry would take precedence. If she was not his child either a different fathers name would have been given or no father name for an illigitimate child.
  9. I think this is the record for the daughter of Guyot and Baudry page 1 bottom right which is clearly Marguerite Guyot, daughter of Pierre and Marie Baudry. I don't see how this is relevant to this profile.
  10. I did find a Marguerite Milly in Louisbourg, V 4 that gives her B2, but I don't know how to find that location in the records. Alpha list by location
  11. Regarding the note at the top of the profile for disputed parents. I do agree so far, that she was not born on July 13, 1733. However, there must be a typo in the math about her birth. If she was 83 in 1820, then her birth year would be 1737 not 1837. At the old age of 83, that could be off by some number of years, even 10 years! So it would not rule out a birth year of 1730 to 1740 or even later. If you replace the July 13, 1733 date with something, I would put in 1737 estimated, for now.
  12. I would also make a notation on the Find a Grave source entry that the relationships are incorrect and this source is not to be used for her profile. Maybe put that at the bottom to take it out of the list of legitimate sources.

OK Adrian, I made the mother as that all seems to fit together, including her mothers remarriage. The mother is created:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dupuis-1565 You could now put in her second marriage - good find! I sometimes use google translate and type in the written words. Cindy

Hi, Adrian, according to the source I have about Thomas (who fit perfectly with the info in this bio) he died in 2/22/1733, some months before Margarette was born. His wife was Louise-Marguerite Dupuis, so that would be her mother. Can you check further? He is Milly-18 and you can see his parents. I haven't added Louis Aubert yet because it would be best if you checked on these dates. They were married about 1730.

Hi, Adrian, this profile is beautifully written. I see you mention her father and his parents, and her mother and siblings. Do you have enough records to add their profiles to Wikitree? I did a search and did not find her parents in order to connect them.
