Alice (Larner) Hills was born in Norwich, Norfolk, England.

Alice Muriel Larner was born on November 12 1920.[1] at her family home, in 47 Lincoln Street, Norwich, Norfolk, England. She was the youngest of five surviving children born to Willie Larner and Amy Porter.

Alice lived all her life in Norwich, with the exception of some short stays in other places in the U,K, during WWII.

Alice began school at Avenue Road and later went to the Girls Model School from there she went to the commercial school in Duke Street having been successful in gaining an award from Mannings' and Moy's' Charities which paid her fees. She qualified in shorthand and typing. Certificates state that she passed an examination in the Theory of Pitmans Shorthand on September 30, 1935 and she gained a Speed Certificate for Pitman's Shorthand at the rate of eighty words a minute on October 30, 1935.

Once qualified Alice went to work in the office at Oxo and then at Colemans. When the war came Alice was called up and served in the ATS. As her father was not well she was given a compassionate posting in Norwich. She married Victor Samuel Hills on November 1, 1942 in her home parish of Christ Church, Eaton,[2]

but the next year he was posted abroad so they had to wait until they were both demobbed in 1945 to set up home together. They bought a bungalow in Hellesdon in 1946 and lived the rest of their lives there.

In 1949 Alice gave birth to Christine, her only child, though she had hoped to have more and had chosen the names Martyn and Catherine for them. When Alice's mother became ill she brought her to live with the family and cared for her for several years.

Later Alice returned to work part time, first at Boulton and Paul then at Mackintosh's where she worked on statistics until retirement at the age of sixty.

Home was the centre of her life she did a lot of baking, there were always plenty of homemade cakes. She also did gardening, knitting, dress making, patchwork and other handiwork. She enjoyed holidays in Scotland and abroad and days out in the Norfolk countryside or visiting relatives. Alice kept in close touch with all her family by letters and phone calls.

Alice and Vic celebrated their Ruby, Golden and Diamond wedding anniversaries with family gatherings at home.
