Biography

Penelope Pelham was the daughter of Herbert Pelham of Hastings, Sussex, England and his wife Penelope West. She was baptised at Hastings St Clements on 11 October 1618: [1]
1618 October the 11 Baptiz: Penelope daugh. of Mr Harbert Pelham

Penelope was the fourth of eight siblings; all the younger four siblings were born in Boston, Lincolnshire where the family moved to between 1618 (Penelope's baptism) and 1621 (Anthonie's baptism).

Her father died in Boston, Lincolnshire, England in July 1624 when Penelope was six years old. [2] [3]

Penelope emigrated to New England in 1635 at the age of 16 years and was authorised to "pass to her brother's plantation." She was admitted to the Boston church on March 24, 1638/9.

In 1641 at Boston, Massachusetts she became the second wife of Richard Bellingham, following the death of his first wife, Elizabeth Backhouse.[4]Her husband, a very wealthy individual, became Colonial Governor of Massachusetts Bay in 1641.

  6. Ann was baptized at Boston on July 26, 1652 and died soon thereafter.
  7. Grace was baptized at Boston on August 13, 1654 and died at Boston on September 3, 1654.

Penelope (Pelham) Bellingham died at Boston on May 29, 1702. Her husband preceded her in death on December 7, 1672, leaving a substantial inheritance to his wife and only living son, Samuel.

Research Notes

Anderson says her origins were in Bures, Essex, but none of the Pelham family lived there until Penelope's elder brother Herbert married Jemima Waldegrave of Bures ad Montem, Essex in 1626. [5]

Hello PGM, considering that Penelope's 3 elder siblings were baptised in Sussex and we have a reasonable baptism for her in Hastings, Sussex and there is no reason for her to be baptised in Essex, can the baptism location and date be changed? Happy to do this. Jo

Certainly makes sense to me, Jo. Just wondering if Cheryl (Aldrich) Skordahl has any input?

Hi Jo, thanks for your comment. I’ll review the profile and post a comment.

Yes, please go ahead and make the change, with sources.

The only thing I have found is that Anderson in "Great Migration" gives her origins as Bures, Essex... but that doesn't mean she was baptized there. [1]

Thanks for your work on this family, Jo.

Is there a source for Penelope's birth at Bures St Mary (Suffolk, England)? Her brother Herbert didn't acquire property at Bures Hamlet (Essex, England) until his marriage with Jemima Waldegrave in 1626.

I've found a baptism for Penelope Pelham daughter of Mr Harbert Pelham on 11 October 1618 at St Clements, Hastings, Sussex. This is about 20 miles from Michelham, Sussex. I'll stick it in the research notes, then the Ancestry Sharing link will format properly.

There e was a Herbert/Herbert Pelham at Catsfield which is near Battle. Check Esat Suusex Record office I think the record I saw was for 1614 but it also said he was the son of Edmund Pelham

All the surviving baptism records for siblings of Penelope have the baptism place in either Sussex (pre-1620 baptisms, either at Hellingly or at Hastings) or Boston, Lincolnshire (post-1620). See her mother's profile for sourcing. This supports the 1618 baptism record being for the Penelope of this profile.

It was Penelope's brother Herbert who settled at Bures where his wife's family lived and where he acquired property through his marriage: see his profile, Herbert Pelham-27.

Is that a yes for changing the birthplace to St Clements, Hastings, Sussex?
