Biography

Karen attended the Winston Gathering 2022 with descendants of those formerly enslaved at Woodlawn, and the current property owners, descendants of the enslaver Thomas Winston. The event was hosted in the spirit of unity, with our shared history discussed, and the opportunity to honor those in the graveyard of the enslaved

I'm Karen Allman, and I live in California. I'm the grandmother of four. I explore all the lines leading from my Allman and Campbell lines. I also hope to leave to my grandchildren well researched lines from their father's paternal side. Working on the family genealogy is my hobby, with an emphasis on genetic genealogy. I respond to emails and enjoy working collaboratively on shared lines.

My genealogy journey began in 2010 when I was trying to learn about who some people were in old family photos from the 1930's. On the same trip to my parent's home in Arkansas, I received some letters my mom had from Mildred Felker, a cousin of her mother's. There was the beginnings of some family research in there, and since then I've been on a journey to "find the stories" of these people who make up my family tree. I've benefited greatly from the friends and mentors I've gained while on this journey. My favorite tools are GEDmatch and Genome Mate Pro.

In addition to my own lines, I've dedicated a lot of time to documenting my son's African American heritage through his paternal lines. I've joined the US Black Heritage Project. Surnames on that side of the family include Heard, Allen, Winston, Whittaker, Bailey, Burton.

Please reach out if you'd like to collaborate on any of the profiles I manage.

Hello Karen,

In your request to be put on the trusted list for Andrew Owen, I have done one better. Since I have no ties to the Owens profiles and became manager of he and his wife in order to add her correct LNAB, I adopted them. Considering your interest, I gladly orphaned them both in order for you to adopt them and make the necessary improvements and add family to their profiles.

If I have any other profiles in the family that I also adopted and don't remember, let me know and I will orphan them also.

Have a great day!!!

Hi! Your comment on Richard Griffin made me look. Yup - https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Relationship&action=calculate&person1_name=Allman-716&person2_name=Noland-165

Karen and Liz are 9th cousins twice removed

Karen Allman and Liz (Noland) Shifflett are both descendants of John Stith.

Forgive me if we've already done this (I suffer from CRS... can't remember s.. stuff).

Cheers, Liz

Hi Karen, thanks for your speedy reply,

My GED # is: QE160476C1, it's a combination of Ancestry.com autosomal, FamilyTree.com y DNA and FamilyTree.com mt DNA. I also tried Doris (Spence) McCurdy, no match there either.?! I am going out now to do some running around before it gets dark. One thing I'm going to do is to get a 23 & Me kit, since so many profiles use it. I think there must be an error on my tree, somewhere between William Boren III and John William Boren.

Later, dusty

Could you upload (to GEDmatch) the FTDNA family finder test only? Or perhaps just your Ancestry kit.

I find we get false compares with a super kit compared to a standard kit.

Sorry I took so long to reply. After I did my running around the other day I went to hospital, I had been feeling numb and tingly on my left side all day. I guess I had a small stroke and they didn't let me go home till late yesterday. I made some quick DNA changes, but I might re-load some of the files altogether. Merry Christmas, dusty

Hi Karen,

It's been awhile since we've corresponded. I'm just lately getting into DNA research. I made a GED match with Peggy McCurdy and I saw that you are a manager on her profile. Then I compared your GED to mine, no match. Actually, Peggy is only the 2nd person I have matched. The other is Robert Kennedy and I have no idea how we are related. I know you're probably busy with Christmas, to me it's just another day, but if you get some time I would like to know any observations you might have about this.

Happy Holidays to you and your family, dusty

Hello Dusty, I'd be happy to help. Please update your profile to include your GEDmatch number, or send it to me privately if you prefer. I've connected with many of our cousins, and I'd be interested if you match any that I work with. I do plan to be busy today, and tomorrow, Christmas Eve. But, my family activities on Christmas Day do not start until late afternoon, so if morning works for you, let me know. I'm on Pacific Coast time. Send me a private message with your number and the best time to reach you if you'd like to go over any questions you have then.

Hi

Wish you a Happy New Year. May 2018 bring you all you need to be happy.

Congratulation for adding your contributions in December. Whatever the quantity of your contributions, they all count. As I always say "Quality is better than quantity" to make a great family tree.

Thank you for being a Wikitreer,

Guy Constantineau - Wikitree leader

HI,

just a word (late) to congratulate you on the contributions you made during the month of November. Whatever the quantity, they are all important.

Your work is appreciated.

Thanks

Guy Constantineau

Phillip, as stated in my more detailed private response I appreciate the tip and I'm looking in to this.

I'd like to publicly thank you, and to encourage anyone else with a tip to drop a note. Research leads are appreciated.

Hi Karen,

I noticed you had been doing a good bit of research and editing on Onesyphrous Standlee (1768-1855). I thought I would point out, that there is another profile for a Onesiphrous Standley (1690-1754). Now these obviously can't be duplicates as they lived nearly 100 years from one another. But this is such an unusual name, there must be a connection of some kind. Hope this helps!

You are doing a great job with your tree. Thanks, again!
P.S. I will alert the DNA project manager to your question as they know much more about it than I do!  :-)
