Biography

Thomas was baptized in Alford, Lincolnshire, England, 31 January 1604, son of "Johis. Wardale,"^[2] at St. Wilfrid's Parish Church. This town was the birthplace of Anne Marbury Hutchinson, the famous religious reformer who he eventually followed.

Thomas was the brother of William Wardwell, born about 1607 in England. He died in April of 1670 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts. William married first Alice before 1633 in England. He married second to Elizabeth Crow on 5 December 1657 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.

Immigration

Thomas and his brother William came to America with their wives in 1633. They were progenitors in America. They landed in Boston, Massachusetts. Thomas settled in Boston. The following was written by Elizabeth Wardwell Stay:^[3]

Wardwell, Thomas, with his wife, Elizabeth, came from Great Britain to Boston, Mass., in 1633, accompanied by his brother William. Soon after they joined the first church in Boston, but being "Antinomians" and followers of Jno. Wheelwright and Ann Hutchinson, were dismissed from said church and they with several others banded together and organized an independent church at Exeter, N. H., which however continued but three years. Thomas was appointed justice and com- missioner to try small cases for that jurisdiction, where he remained a few years and returned to Boston, where he died Dec. 10th, 1646. John Wheelwright was later reinstated in the Boston church, but William Wardwell inclined toward the Quaker religion and his children were brought up in that religious belief, ref- erence being found in New Jersey history, where they went later on. One informant says he lived in Wells, Me., for a short time, also, and returned to Boston, where he died in 1670.

Thomas Wardwell died in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts on 10 December 1646.

He married Elizabeth Woodruff in England before 1633. She was born about 1601 in England and died on 22 February 1697 in Boston, Massachusetts. Their known children,
