Shelly, If you are interested in the Cherokee or are looking for Cherokee ancestors, here are some Wikitree pages you might find helpful:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Native_Americans:_Cherokee

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Finding_a_Cherokee_Ancestor

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Cherokee_Sources/Resources

A quick look at Mary Sutton Nevels doesn't show anything that would suggest a Cherokee connection. She was born, lived, and died in Claiborne County, TN which was not in or near where the Cherokee lived. No one in her family appears on the 1835 Cherokee Census or on the 1851/52 Chapman and Siler Rolls of Cherokee East of the Mississippi. The Cherokee Bob Benge was killed in 1794 after a raid on a Virginia community. There are no records of a wife or children, although he is widely believed to be the father of a man named John Benge who led a detachment on the Trail of Tears.

Thanks, Kathie, I'll look as those. As I said, it's a family story, and very possibly not true. The connection to Chief Benge is alleged to be that one of her ancestors was his half-brother. I did not put anything in her profile about any of this, since it is unproven.

I am not surprised that she is not in the rolls you mention, as my hypothesis is that she is at most 1/8 Native American.

When my sister and I first did our DNA test with Ancestry, she got a trace of Native American blood, and I did not, although I am the one that has keloid scarring, a Native American trait. However, Mary Sutton is just at the outside edge of the possibility of inheriting any DNA, so that is not much help.

Hi Shelly, welcome to the Appalachia Project - South Central Appalachia Team!

You've jumped in with both feet -- already have your interests on the South Central page and ready to go. I see you've also already jumped in on the Discord channel – glad to have you!

Although you seem to be already in the swing of things, it's my duty to remind you of our Reliable (and Unreliable) Sources for the Appalachia Project to help with sourcing our Profiles as you add or come across them. WikiTree requires valid sources on all Profiles and our Project has certain requirements for sources. Check the Appalachia Stickers Page for tips on adding stickers to profiles.

So glad you've joined us! I am always available for any questions or help.

Hi, Tabor! I just read the reliable sources page right before I found your message! Some very good stuff there. I will look at the stickers page next, as I think that my first task will be to put tags and stickers on all the Appalachian profiles I manage.

Cheers! Shelley
