Hi Charles,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Your eighteenth-century research has been pretty diverse, so it’s hard to find one particular project that would be of interest to you. Still, I think that the Germany project could fit your current research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Please take your time. Speed is less important than accuracy here. Add at least one source to each profile before you leave it.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.

 :)

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Thanks! I think I understand my first tasks. I've downloaded my family tree from Ancestry with almost 1900 entries to compare, match, edit and add. I have made my first run through to review all of the suggested matches and have started editing and adding starting with my father and Mother and building out again. Bringing in the entries from the GEDCOM report is messy. Lots of junk. I've always tried to have good sources but some are only ancestry trees of others with just family entries (speculation).

My initial interest in WikiTree is to work on a couple of interesting blocks but they are out several generations and will take awhile to build out to them. My 3rd great grandfather is James Andrew Thompson born in 1818 in Chester, Delaware Co. Pennsylvania. I have really strong documentation for him except no birth record that has his mother and father. Family tradition has his father as Clyde Thompson born 1792 in the same area, but I have found nothing on him. Looking through the census and tax records that I can find, there are no Clyde Thompsons in the county as a head of household. Looking through census and matching what I can from 1790, 1800, 1820 I suspect his name is likely John C. Thompson, but cannot find a solid record. The second is my wife's 3rd great grandfather, Henry Clifford. He served in the British military in Bermuda where his first three children were born beginning in 1812. He must have served in the War of 1812 on the British side but he ends up in Olive Township, Meigs, Ohio in the 1820 census with his wife and three children. The record has one was a citizen and 4 are foreigners, so we guess he arrived in the US in 1815 which was the end of the war. Two of his boys were named for British war heroes. It has been very interesting researching the history of Bermuda and how the war was conducted from there, including the burning of Washington DC. So these are my fun areas, but need to get there first and see what I find in WikiTree's records. Thanks again, I look forward to checking RootsSearch as well.

Hi Charles,

At WikiTree, we aim to protect the privacy of all living individuals for their protection and in line with GDPR legislation.

WikiTree has excellent privacy controls, but that won’t protect you and your family if you publish your personal information, or the information of your living family members, in your biography.

Since WikiTree is a public website, I suggest removing dates and locations of life events and references to living individuals from your biography. If you create profiles for your family members instead, WikiTree’s automatic privacy controls will protect their information.

Did you know you can check what is visible to the public, by going to your profile and clicking on the Profile (public view) tab?

For further information about privacy, see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Privacy_Policy#Information_on_Living_Family_Members

Many thanks

Thank you for such a nice welcome. I look forward to learning more about my family history.

I have a large tree up in Family Search and Ancestry. Should I import it to wikitree?

Hi Charles,

You are very welcome, it is lovely to have you here with us. You can download your trees as GEDCOMs and then upload to here, there is a limit of 5,000 names. This is for Ancestry, when you log in to Ancestry click on your tree and select the tree setting, on the right hand side under manage your tree click on export your tree and that will start the GEDCOM, it takes a few minutes, once it has downloaded you can then upload it on here. It will take a few minutes to upload, and you will get a message through when it is ready. The GEDCOM will not automatically populate your tree, it generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through either accepting or rejecting suggested matches, once you have done this any remaining names will need to be added manually.

This is for family Search, RootsMagic has a free "lite" version that you can download. That program will sync to FamilySearch and load the info for their family to RootsMagic which can then be used to create the GEDCOM

You may also find these links helpful, if you need to Split your Ancestry tree or Split a GEDCOM

If you use the Chrome browser, you could try using their WikiTree X extension.

I hope this helps, any problems, please let me know

Take care

Karen
