Born in Taranaki, she lived in Wellington and is now residing in the Kaipara.
Being the youngest of six children, she has been an avid follower of the family history since the early 1990s when she found a published book of stories and genealogical tables based on some of her paternal ancestors, Thomas Urquhart McKenzie (1820-1904) and Margaret (Fraser) McKenzie (1826-1909), in her home library.[1] Discovering that she was too young to be included in the book, she took it upon herself to handwrite her birth details and those of her missing siblings into the family copy.
This sparked a fact-finding mission, during which she gathered further information from her aunties and uncles to complete the details for the cousins she knew were also missing from Poyntzfield. Later, she contributed this information to Ian Clapham for publication in the book to coincide with the Fraser Family Reunion in the mid-90s, which she regretfully missed due to family health concerns.[2]
She spent many hours pouring over the two books, Poyntzfield and Pukehou, in the coming years, reading their stories and scanning through the names. Her curiosity was piqued when she spotted surnames familiar to her but from non-familial circles, wondering if they could be distant cousins. She delighted in the advent of internet sleuthing, which allowed her to dig and eventually establish connections to someone she knew.
In 1993, while on holiday with her parents in the United Kingdom, she had the opportunity to meet maternal relatives on the south coast and watch her siblings perform in the Edinburgh Tattoo. During a day trip to the Black Isle,[3] where Thomas Urquhart McKenzie hailed from, she coincidentally noticed a dusty old sign by the roadside pointing to the large home where he had worked as a gardener before his emigration. This home, which became the namesake for the Rob Knight publication "Poyntzfield," was the name Thomas used for his homestead in the Rangitikei. A quick visit to the gardens at the house confirmed that it hadn't changed much from the pictures she had seen in the book. A drone video of the gardens, providing glimpses of the house, is available on YouTube.[4]
In the late 1990s, another family history book focusing on the German/Prussian influence in the Scots, stemming from Gustav August Rockel (1844-1917) marrying Eliza Fraser (McKenzie) Rockel (1843-1939), was published.[5]
Throughout the years, little well-collated and published information has been available on her Irish and English paternal ancestors, as well as her maternal ancestors. It is these branches of her family tree that she hopes to expand on WikiTree, provided she doesn't get too distracted by bright shiny objects!
