Biography
Marretje Buijs was born before 16 Jun 1714 in Kings County, New York, daughter of Matthys Jans Buijs and Lijsbeth Arianse. Marretje’s baptism record lists her father and mother as; Mathijs Buijs and Elizabeth Arianse. She was baptized on 16 Jun 1714 in New York. Witnesses were Dirk Dykman and Elizabeth De Groot.[1][2]
On 5 May 1738, Maria Buijs and Cornelius van Hoven obtained a marriage license in Manhattan, New York.[3] Maria (23) married Cornelius van Hoven (21); son of Cornelis van Houwegem and Steintie Hendricksen the following day on 6 May 1738 at the Collegiate Church in Manhattan, New York.[4][5] Their children were:
- Cornelius Vanover
- Elizabet Vanover
- Hendrick Jans Vanover (Rev. Henry)
- Mattheus Vanover
- Christina Vanover
Maria passed away before June 1, 1761, aged about 46.[6]

Marretje (Buijs) Vanover's memorial, managed by Debby (Haase-Vanover) McLean and quoted from G. L. Vanover’s book, supports her parentage, and indicates residency in Kings County, Long Island, New York, where she was likely born.
Cornelius Vanover III married Maria on May 6, 1738 at the Dutch Reformed Church of New York City. They lived in Somerset County, New Jersey. From 1739 until 1754, Cornelius and Maria (Buys) Vanover had five (5) children who were baptized at various Reformed Dutch Churches in the Somerset County, New Jersey area.
[With or without Marretje?], the family had moved from Somerset County to Sussex County, New Jersey by June 1, 1761 when they [Cornelius] first appear in the Sussex County, New Jersey records.[6]

The Vanover family migrated from Somerset County, New Jersey, to Greenwich Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, by June 1, 1761. On that date, Cornelius Vanover purchased a 243-acre plantation from Patrick Nixon and his wife, Sidney.
On April 26, 1765, Cornelius Vanover sold 110 acres of this land to Henry Vanover and his wife, Tiney. Later, on July 2, 1768, Cornelius Vanover and his wife, Tiney, sold the property to Benjamin McCullough... [G.L. Vanover, The Vanover Family, page 20]
A Research Note:
It is noteworthy that both Cornelius and Henry are named in the same deed, revealing significant changes in their households. The records suggest that Cornelius's first wife, Marretje (Maria) Buys, likely died between 1754 (the birth of her last child) and before 1761, when Cornelius remarried. She probably passed away in Somerset County, New Jersey, prior to the family's relocation.
Similarly, Henry Vanover’s first wife, Rachel, is inferred to have died before 1765, when he is documented with his second wife, Tiney.
