In response to Guy Hornbeck, this is what we wrote up for Shirley Hornbeck's book. The 303 pages of van Hoorebeke genealogy in the Eik van Eekloo copied for us at VVF-Melle was forwarded to Shirley Hornbeck in November 2000. The Dutch information from Amsterdam comes from Shirley.
WHO WAS FRANCHOIS VAN HOORENBEKE, CHIRURGEON, NAMED BUITENPOORTER OF GENT IN 1606?
19 January 2001 Virginia Carpenter Jansen
The Van Hoorebekes of Belgium
Currently the Belgian province of East Flanders is divided into six arrondisements: Aalst, Dendermonde, Eekloo, Gent, Oudenaarde and Sint-Niklaas. In the northern part of the province, Gent contains 24 parishes. In the 17th century anyone in Amsterdam, Holland would consider a person from these parishes to be from Gent.
Oudenaarde, in the southern part of the province, has 11 parishes, including Hoorebeke. According to the genealogy by Gustavus Van Hoorebeke (originally published in 1895!) in Volume 9 (1984) issue of the genealogical periodical "De Eik van Eekloo", the Van Hoorebekes of East Flanders are descended from Pieter Van Hoorebeke who was born at Oudenaarde about 1250. There is a genealogical meusum at Eekloo that features Van Hoorebekes!
Of Pieter's three sons, Steven remained at Oudenaarde, Jacobus removed to Gent, and Jan went to Aalst where his descendants spelled the family name Van Horenbeke.
At his death in 1478 Joos Van Hoorebeke (6th in descent from Pieter) owned three breweries in the region of Gent, each of which descended to a different son.
Jan Van Hoorebeke (1527-1608) of Gent (9th in descent from Pieter) is said to have been married 5 times and survived the takeover of Gent from 1578 to 1584 by the Calvinists during the Dutch civil war. The Van Hoorebekes living in Eekloo today (still the leading brewers of beer in Belgium) are descended from Jan's son Charles (1572-1645), a son of Jan by his 4th wife Lievijne, daughter of Frans Deijnooit. The total number of children of Jan Van Hoorebeke and the names of his other wives are unknown to us.
In her estate settlement at Gent in 1588, Lievijne DENOOIT expresses concern for her minor children Philip and Charles. With the birthdate of Charles fixed at 1572 and estimating Philip's birth at 1670, Levijne could still have had older children who were not minors. Therefore we estimate the birthdate of Franchois to be 1566 or earlier, if he was her son. Any children of the 5th wife of Jan would be too young to be Franchois.
In 1606 a surgeon called Franchois van Hoorenbeke was named as a buitenpoorter of Gent. A buitenpoorter is defined as a citizen living beyond the walls of the city; a city residence of 6 weeks and the modern equivalent of $100 was required for registration as buitenpoorter. Since no external birthplace for Franchois was given, as it was for others being registered, Franchois was probably born at Gent or within the surrounding arrondisement then dominated by Gent. It is likely that Franchois was then leaving Gent for Holland and wanted that status for himself and his sons Jacob and Joos. The leading candidate for father of Franchois Van Hoorenbeke is Jan(9th in descent from Pieter), who died in 1608.
In his marriage intentions to Sara Warnaarts at Amsterdam in Jan1635 Joos age 30 years (born about 1604) signed his name "van Hoorebeke", and the scribe wrote in that he was Joost VAN HOORENBEECK from Gent. The oldest son of Joos and Sara, born in Dec1635 at Nieuwkerk, Amsterdam was named Francois; the second born in 1637 was Jacob.
Joos van Hoorebeke born at/near Gent in 1604, married to Sara Warnaarts (born 1617 from Stolck(Stolwijk in South Holland)(possibly the daughter of Warnaar Drust who had a daughter Soophie born at Nieuwkerk, Amsterdam in 1619) in 1635, was a factor and a solicitor and was buried in 1646 at Westerkerk (reserved for burials only) in Amsterdam. Joos had a sister Aemelberch who was married to the druggist Lodewijk van der Berch. Another sibling appears to be Jacob van Hoorebeke who (possibly following in his father's footsteps) became a buitenpoorter of Gent in 1639, according to a VVF ARIADNE database computer search.
Joos was 2 years old when Franchois was named buitenpoorter of Gent. Was Franchois the father of Joos?
Warnaar van Hoorenbeek, born about 1645 immigrated to New Amsterdam about 1660 and was the progenitor of the large Hornbeck family in America. At this writing there is still no proof of the ancestry of Joos van Hoorebeke born at/near Gent in 1604, who married Sara Warnaarts in 1635 and was buried in 1646 at Westerkerk in Amsterdam. He is still the leading candidate to be the father of Warnaar van Hoorenbeek, the immigrant to New Amsterdam. There are still three missing baptisms: Warnaar about 1645 at Amsterdam, Joos about 1604 at Gent and Frans about 1566 at Gent. We have the marriage of Joos at Amsterdam, but the marriage of Frans, and 4 of the 5 wives of Jan are missing, We have the death of Joos at Amsterdam in 1646, the death of Jan at Gent? in 1608, but not the death of Frans the surgeon who was probably in military service somewhere on one or both sides in the Dutch War of Independence from Spain.
There remains plenty of genealogical searching to prove this particular link from Hornbeck to Van Hoorebeke. And there are several alternative links because of the large size of the Van Hoorebeke family over 350 years of radiation from Oudenaarde, East Flanders, Belgium.
Nevertheless the name Van Hoorebeke is certainly attached to Joos and to Warnaar if Joos was his father.
Virginia Carpenter Jansen (http://boards.ancestrylibrary.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=152&p=surnames.hornbeck)
Hi again,
By reading microfilmed records of Gent, Belgium, we have found a baptism for Franciscus van Hoorebeke on 10Apr1568 at St Sauveur Kerk in Gent. This is a likely candidate for Frans, father of Joos van Hoorebeke and grandfather of Warnaar the immigrant. The father of Franciscus is Philipp who is not in the published van Hoorebeke genealogies. However, the baptism is witnessed by Dominicus van Hoorebeke who is on the branch which is the ancestor of the Middelburg, Zeeland family that in the 17th century provided Isaak van Hoorenbeeck who was painted by Hals when he was chief executive officer of Holland. Assuming that Philipp is son of Dominicus we now have a line back into the van Hoorebeke family of Belgium. There were two other sons of Philipp in the baptisms: Hugo (14 Nov 1569) and Petrus(23Dec1571) and the name Van Loo appeared frequently as witnesses indicating that Franciscus' mother may be Van Loo.
We have NOT found the baptisms of Joos and his sister Aemelberch (Bertschi) in the Gent records although both of their marriage intentions say they were from Gent. We strongly suggest that someone learn how to read the notarial records of Gent. there are many microfilms, about one for every two years from 1379 to 1795. Surely there is mention of Frans, Joos, and Aemelberch. Also Aemelberch had six children in Amsterdam from 1627 to 1638) with Lodewijk van Den Berch (Berghe) a druggist from Middelburg. They are Abraham (29 Jul 1627), Isaac (16 Jun 1629), Jacob (5 Feb 1632), Sara (18 aug 1633), Rebecca (8 Apr 1635) and Rachel (17 Oct 1638). At least one of the baptisms was witnessed by Joos van Hoorenbeke. There may be other van Hoorebeke family witnesses for some of these baptisms which occurred at Nieuwkerk and at Oudekerk in Amsterdam. Middelburg records should also be examined. And since Joos died at the age of 40-45 Warnaar should be in Orphans Court Notarial records at Amsterdam even though he might have claimed his inheritance many years later.
Virginia Carpenter Jansen
I believe the Jansen Daughter information is correct. The early generations were established and verified in the account of Gustave Van Hoorebeke. I have a copy of this book written in Dutch that I obtained from Horebeke relatives in Ghent a year and a half ago. All Hornbeck families (including all varied spellings) originated from the small villages E. of Oudenaarde. The name was first mentioned in the 11th century.

Hornbeck-85 and Hoornbeeck-1 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles represent the same person and should be merged. The Hornbeck-85 1689 birthdate conflicts with the 1670 marriage date...this was a second marriage and the 1645 birth date is more accurate. Hornbeck-85 seems to show only the second marriage. Merge destination should be Hoornbeeck-1, as this best reflects the surname. Hornbeck is a more modern name form.

There are several merges dependent on this merge.
