Biography

1776 Project
John Looney Sr was a Civil Servant in the American Revolution.

John was born in Colonial America about 1732. He is the son of Robert Looney and Elizabeth Unknown. He lived most of his life in Augusta (now Botetourt) County, VA and passed away there in Botetourt Co, VA in 1817. [1] [2]

John Looney is often confused with his nephew, Capt. John Looney, son of Robert Looney Jr. This confusion stems from the fact that both Uncle and Nephew married Renfro sisters, daughters of Stephen Renfro Sr. The Uncle John Looney married Esther "Hettie" Renfro while the Nephew Capt. John Looney married his step-sister, Elizabeth Renfro. Stephen Renfro had married the widow, Margaret Rhea Looney after her husband Robert Looney Jr. was killed by Indians in February 1756.

Uncle John Looney stayed in Botetourt Co, VA while the Nephew, Capt. John Looney, moved to the southwest with the combined Renfro - Looney family and it was he who served in the Washington Co, VA and Tennessee military with his brother Capt. Moses Looney and Uncle Col. David Looney [3]
