Biography

Hannah was a Friend (Quaker)

Hannah Matson, the daughter of John Matson, Sr. and Margaret (name uncertain) was born about 1715 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (probably at Upper Merion).

She married Charles Davis (Davies) on 9 Feb 1732[1][2] who came from England at the age of 16 and later moved to North Carolina with his family.

"Pursuant to a law of PA to prevent clandestine marriages, Charles Davis of Blockley, of Philadelphia County of PA and Hannah Matson, daughter of John Matson of Merion in the same county and province aforesaid with consent of her father having published their intentions of marriage with each other according to law....9 Dec 1732 they met at house of Charles Read, Esq. & J.P. for City of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA. Witnesses and guests were John Matson, Jr, Daniel Matson, Mary Andrew, Jane George, Ellin Jones, Sarah Willaims, Sarah Read." Other guests were listed in another column. Later records state that John Matson and wife Hannah "have been of pretty orderly behavior since his coming under the care and notice of this meeting." Cane Creek MM states Charles and Hannah Davies witnessed marriage of Eleazer Hunt to Catherine Cox in 1752. Charles is listed with 3 adult polls in 1755, Orange Co, NC. Henry McCullogh sold Charles 187 acres on 2 Aug 1758. The land later became Chatham Co.

Hannah and Charles had eight children: Thomas (married Elizabeth Knox), John (married Mary Chamness), Elizabeth (married Thomas Vestal), Sarah (married Thomas Cox, son of William and Catherine), Mary (married William Moffitt), Hannah (married Hugh Moffitt), Thamer (married Thomas Cox, son of Thomas and Mary) and Abigail (married Abram Osborn).

Hannah died 25 Oct 1812[3]

A complete genealogy of the Charles Davis and Hannah Matson family (descendants) can be found in "Davis: A Quaker Family" by Eleanor M Davis. (Gateway Press, Baltimore, MD, 1985.) She has used Hinshaw's Friends' Records of Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina and deeds, surveys, will books and census records for much of her source of information.

Matsen-17 and Matson-13 appear to represent the same person because: spelling difference
The date of birth from Hinshaw may be a misreading of that index. The date 1 May 1710 is for a Hannah Davis born to parents named Davis in Chester MM on that date. That Hinshaw index record does not appear to be for a Hannah Matson. Her birth record would be under her maiden name, not married name with other children named Davis. This is an error which I entered on the profile and so have removed it and marked date uncertain.

Matson-13 and Matson-640 appear to represent the same person because: Just looks like an obvious kind of match with spellings having created appearance, previously, of mismatch

Matson-194 and Matson-13 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicates
Matson-25 and Matson-13 appear to represent the same person because: these appear to be the same person, but check h the marriage date. it is hard to marry before the birth date.
