Cecilie (Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg) Hereditary Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (abt. 1911 - 1937)

Biography

Princess Cecilie was born in 1911. She was the daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenburg.

In 1931 she married Hereditary Grand Duke Georg Donatus of Hesse.

Cecilie and her family went to Frankfurt on 16 November 1937 to get on board a plane of the Belgian company Sabena which was to take them to London, where they were to attend her brother-in-law Louis's wedding.. The plane crashed and killed everyone on board, including Cecilie, her husband George,his mother Princess Eleanore, their two sons Ludwig and Alexander, and a newborn baby which Cecilie seemed to have given birth to in the middle of the flight. The plane crash that caused the death of Princess Cecilie and her family was recounted in the sixth episode of the documentary series Mémoires d'exil (1999) by Frédéric Mitterrand.

The funeral of Cecilie and her relatives took place in Darmstadt on 23 November 1937. After the ceremony, the remains of Cecilie and her family were buried in a family vault at the Grand Ducal mausoleum of Rosenhöhe.^[1]
