Biography

Alleged wife of George Stocking

The Stocking Ancestry (p. 3) says George Stocking m. first Anna. "On the death of Anna, ... he is understood to have m. 2d Agnes (Shotwell) Webster, widow of John Webster, governor or the colony."[1]

The Genealogy cites no sources or evidence.

There are several factors refuting this.
(1) Governor Webster it is now known married Agnes (Smith)
(2) George Stocking's will names his wife Anne
(3) Reputable genealogists Robert Charles Anderson and Frank Farnsworth Starr do not support this identity and Marriage.

The "Stocking Ancestry" source by C.H. Stocking quotes the will of George Stocking which bequeaths to Anna, but does not explain this contradiction of a second marriage to an Agnes.

However, in one place George Stocking does appear with an apparent wife Agnes; when they are both listed as founding members of Second Church of Hartford on 12 Feb 1669 (double-year not specified).[2]

The simplest explanation is that the Hartford Church records were mis-transcribed, or the original writer was incorrect about her first name and George Stocking only had one wife, Anna Unknown. More research can be done on "Shotwell" in Hartford.

The following dates are incorrect, the death date is for the real wife of George. The birth looks like it was an estimate and 1Jul is a sort date.

  • Birth 1 JUL 1586, Suffolk, England; Death 25 MAY 1683 Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut, cited by[3]

Marriage n.d., England[4]

Widow Agnes Webster, if she was the second wife of George Stocking, couldn't have been the mother of his children!

According to the The Stocking Ancestry and History of a Stocking Family the last name of George Stockings first wife "Anna" is unknown = Green-1913. Still looking or waiting for a source for the name of Green if anyone has more information.

George Stocking is said to have married after Anna's death to the widow of Governor John Webster. Her name was Agnes Smith. In the Stocking History it lists her as Agnes (Shotwell) Webster.
