Biography

Frederik Willemsz Sluijsken is born in 1644 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, as eldest son of Willem Paulusz Sluijsken, a prosperous Wine Trader in the city and of Maria van der Waijen, daughter of the wealthy Lace Trader Jacques van der Waijen, who had to flee from Antwerp, Belgium, to Amsterdam. They lived at the Fluwelenburgwal in Amsterdam.

Frederik was painted by one of the most famous Dutch Painters of the Golden Age Ferdinand Bol in 1652 at the age of 8. The family of Ferdinand Bol's future wife Elisabeth Dell, also living at the Fluwelenburgwal, is related to the Sluijskens. We may assume as we know Bol got many assignments at the upper class in Amsterdam those days through his marriage (1653), Bol also got this assignment that way to paint the grandnephew of his fiancee, Frederik Sluijsken.

Bol 1652."ætatis 8. sua"[1]

For a long time it was said that this is the portrait of the son of the famous Dutch painter Ferdinandus Bol. Only shortly we know, after research of Prof.Dr.Frans Grijzenhout and his team for the Dutch televisonprogram Kunstraadsels it can not be Bol's son but it is definitely Frederik Willemsz Sluijsken, the later Heer ter Horst, in the portrait here and how the portrait came to England. Frederik is a grandnephew of Ferdinand's spouse Elisabeth Dell. The painting became news as it was sold a little while ago (2015) for almost 6 million euros in England at Sotheby's and is now lent to the National Gallery in London by the new owner.

At the age of 26 years Mr.Frederik marries in 1670 in Amsterdam the 25 years old Suzanna de Neufville, daughter of Jan de Neufville and Suzanna Bex.

Ten years after their marriage Susanne passed away in 1680, a few days after the birth of their daugther Jacoba Johanna.

Frederik remarries 12 years later in 1692 in Amsterdam with Maria Heinsius from Delft, sister of the famous Anthonij Heinsius, General Secretary of Holland.[2]

Het Huis ter Horst 1739, door Abraham de Haen[3]

Around the year 1700 Frederik becomes owner of Huize ter Horst, in Voorschoten, The Netherlands. His name is then Frederik Sluijken, Heer van ter Horst. The orginal building is destroyed. What is left nowadays at the estate of the time Frederik was the owner is the water pump[4] in the garden with his personal escutcheon and the coach house with the escutcheon of ter Horst and the date of building above the door.[5]

Frederik's funeral is dated 1710-10-13 in 's-Gravenhage.
