AANKOMS EN NAAM:

Douw Gerbrandts STEYN het om en by 1669 na die Kaap toe gekom. Ons weet dat hy definitief by die Kaap was die 8 Junie 1672 want hy het 'n dokument toe geteken. Sy regte naam was heel waarskynlik Douwe Gerbens. Hy was van Leeuwaarden, Friesland, Nederland. Hy trou op die 19 Augustus 1685 met Maria LOZEE van de Caap. Maria was 'n slavin, maar haar plek van herkoms moet nog bepaal word. (Kyk ook onder Elizabeth van Wyk). ^[13]

Douwe Steijn was die baasmetselaar vir die Kompanie met die Fort. In 1672 word daar 19 metselaars genoem in die Kaap, en Douwe was die oorsigter van hulle. ^[13]

KINDERS:

Douw het 'n kind gehad in Amsterdam voordat hy na die Kaap gekom het: Age Douwez Stein, hierdie kind het die boedel van Douw ontvang. ^[13]

Jacobus Steyn was sy stiefseun hier in die Kaap, die meeste Steyn afstammelinge kom van hom, maar ons is nie seker wie sy vader was nie. Jacobus was die kind van Maria, maar hy kon dalk die buitegelike kind gewees het tussen Douw en die slavin Maria. Jacobus het getrou op 4 Oktober 1706 met Maria Potgieter. ^[13]

Douw en Maria het een kind saam gehad gehad wat ons van weet definitief: Anna gedoop 24 Augustus 1692, X Marthinus Prins ^[13]

PLAAS:

In Februarie 1683 kry Douwe 'n plaas in Stellenbosch wat later bekend sal wees as die Oude Molen. Die plaas se legging word soos volg beskrywe: Aan die noorde lê die plaas Krommerivier (asook Bergzicht) wat behoort het aan Jan Janz van Eeden. Aan die suide lê die plaas Libertas wat behoort aan Jan Corneliz (van Oud-Beyerland). Aan die ooste lê die plaas van Harmen Janz (van Noordhoorn, hy was Potgieter). Aan die weste lê Papagaaisberg. Douw verkoop die plaas in 1687 aan Van den Brink. Van 1692 tot 1694 het Douw die plaas Rustenburg besit, vandag bekend as Stellenrust. ^[13]

DIE VRIENDEKRING VAN DOUW EN MARIA STEYN:

Douw was goeie vriende met Harman Janzoon Potgieter. Op 19 Des 1683 Douw was die peetvader vir Marritie, dogter van Andries Beier en Catharina van de Kaap. Op 17 Sep 1684 was Douw die peetvader vir Ammerentia, dogter van Harman Janzoon Potgieter. Op 31 Augustus 1687 Douwe Gerbrants Steyn and Maria Lozee was peetouers vir Maria, dogter van Harman Janzoon Potgieter. Op 13 Nov 1694 en 27 Nov 1695 Douwe Gerbrants Steyn en Maria Lozee was peetouers vir die kinders van Dirk Coninghoven. Op 13 Okt 1697 Douwe Gerbrants Steyn en Maria Lozee was peetouers vir Everdina, dogter van Jan Cruijwagen. ^[13]

TESTAMENT EN STERWE:

Op 18 Mei 1687 skryf Douw sy Testament en noem net een erfgenaam, hier is 'n uittreksel: Verschijnd voor mij JG de grevenbroek secretaris deses Commandements Douw Gerbrant Stein metzelaar in dienst der e Comp, hier bescheide, dewelke in tegenwoordigheid der ondergeschreve getuigen verklaarde, getransport: gecedeerd, en in vollen eigendom overgelaten te hebben, gelijk hij transporteert, cedeerd en in vollen eigendom uijt vaderlijke leivde mist desen overlaat an soon Age Douwez Stein Burger tot Amsterdam, alle sijne so roerende als roerende goederen, egene uitgesonderd, die hem comparant in 't vaderland toebehoren en eigen zijn, en particulierlijk sijn huijsen en erven in 't dorp Weidom bij Leeuwarden in Vriesland gelegen, om daarmee te doen en te handelen als met sijn eigene geacquireerde goederen, en so hijh best te rade werden sal ^[14][13]

Hy sterwe in 1700. Toe Douw oorlede is trou Maria Lozee met Paul Heyns. ^[13]

ARRIVAL AND EVENTS:

Arrived in the Cape in 1672. Douwe is the legal ancestor of many of the Steyns in South Africa. His adopted son Jacobus is the biological ancestor. His name: Original name in Frisian language as standardized by Dutch genealogists: Douwe GERBENS (first name and patronymic). After he went to the Cape, he then added a surname (the Cape was Dutch, not Frisian) to his first name and patronymic: Douwe Gerbrandt STEYN, thus using his patronymic as second name. Variants first name: Douwe / Douw. Variants patronymic/second name: Gerbens / Gerbrens / Gerbrants / Gerbrandts / Gerbrantz / Gerbrandt. Variants surname: STEYN / STEIJN / STIJN.Name as is used in SAG 12 and in Die Families van Ou Swellendam Deel 1 STEYN: Douwe Gerbrandt STEYN. Date of birth: We simply do not know when he was born. However, it is possible to speculate :-) His first name was Douwe and his patronymic was GERBENS. The Frisian people at that time did not work with surnames. That means one could search for baptismal records in www.tresoar.nl using the combination of a boy named Douwe with a father named Gerben for the period between 1620 and 1640. Only one such combination occurs in the entire Friesland. Simply to have a date for the birth of Douwe, I propose the 1631 date even though it is completely uncertain and probably not possible to determine. This date would fit reasonably well the the rest ofthe course of his life. He would then be about 26 when he married Rikstje EGBERTS, about 30 when his son Age was born in Friesland, about 40 when he went to South Africa and about 70 when he died in 1700. ^[13]

For Douwe GERBENS the records show the birth registration of two sons (often only the first one is mentioned) in Leeuwarden. That would make Jacobus his third child (legally, not biologically) and Anna his fourth. Here is the extract about the first child Age DOUWES (the Frisian custom would be to name him using the first name of his father (patronymic): Leeuwarden, dopen, doopjaar 1661 (that is about four years after the marriage to Rikstje EGBERTS)

Records from his time in Friesland: Douwe Gerbrens, husband of Rixt Egberts, bought a house in Leeuwarden in 1663 (still looking for the documentation to support this). ^[13]

Immigration to South Africa: Came from Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. Arrived in the Cape between 1668 - 1670. ^[13]

Records from his time in South Africa: First official mention in the Cape of Douwe Gerbrandts Steyn is as witness in a document dated 8 June 1672 and in an undated list of church members. That means Douwe Gerbens added the surname 'Steyn' to his patronym Gerbens after he came to the Cape. ^[13]

1672: master stonemason in service of the VOIC. Was in charge of the building of the new fort in Cape Town. A position equivalent to that of an under-officer. In a list of 19 stonemasons at the Cape dated 1672, Douwe Steijn is mentioned as their supervisor. The Frisian spelling of his new surname is Steyn, but in the usual Dutch at the Cape at the time, it was common to use the equivalent Steijn. Right up to the 21st century the 'ij' and the 'y' have remained equivalents in the Dutch language, although usually a distinction is made. ^[13]

16 April 1682 - author of a technical report about the condition of the foundations of the fort. ^[13]

1683: receives property in Stellenbosch. This property bordered on what is known today as Papegaaiberg and Libertas. Later bought a farm: Rustenburg (now known as Stellenrust). ^[13]

Marriage in South Africa: 19 August 1685 marries M Lozee. The archives state the information about their marriage thus:

1686: supervisor of the cemetry in Stellenbosch - SAG12 ^[13]

1691-1697: works as surveyor ^[13]

1697-1700: successor of Van Oldeland as master gardener and surveyor of Stellenbosch - SAG12 ^[13]

Maria Lozee was a slave from the Lodge. ^[19] The origin of Maria Lozee (or Lossee) is uncertain. The surname Lozee is unknown. The slave quarters in the Cape was known as the slawe lozee, so it is quite likely that Maria was a slave (see eg HF Heese Kronos 1979 Vol 1). ^[20]

5 Jacobus Steijn: Douwe Gerbrandt Steijn's stepson, Jacobus (whose mother is Maria Lozee) took on the surname Steijn. Jacobus was baptised in 1683 (according to De Villiers) or 1685 (according to Heese). If he was indeed baptised in 1685, there is a possibility that Douwe was his father and that it was a forced marriage. ^[20]

Douw Gerbrand Steyn was the original settler of my family in South Africa. He married Maria Lozee, a slave. He apparently had a son (Age) in Leeuwarden Holland in 1661 and landed (presumably minus son) in Cape Town in 1666. I have traced the Steyn family tree in South Africa to about 1840, but have not yet connected with my great grandmother Catherina Steyn who married my great grandfather Nicolas Taylor. My grandmother was Douwlena Gerbrand Taylor. She passed on some silver candlesticks to my mother which came with the original Douw Gerbrandt in 1666. I now have them in my home in the USA.

You might like to know that the eminent Leics historian WG Hoskins traces the Steane name back to a Thomas and Robert Steyn who were descended from one Steyn of Cosby. It is a Scandinavian name. Theseearly Steyns are associated with Cosby in the 1200s. The name also occurs at this time at Arnesby, then in the 16th century as Steyne, Stayne and Steane (1534 Billesdon, 1539 Shenton, 1542 Birstall, 1555 Tilton. He says the name has come down today as Staines and Staynes, but Steane clearly has the same origin. This info comes from Hoskin's book Leicestershire Yeoman Families and their Pedigrees.

Although I have extracts from later registers I have not transcribed them so cannot easily search for the names. I can find only the two baptisms of a child to Maria Lozee

and the one in 1692 noted above. As long as she was a baptised christian she could stand as a baptismal witness. You will see on the 1683 page Maria Lozee baptising a child, no father stated. Some of the transcripts of the muster rolls can also be found on the EGGSA web site - I have had a check and found the following, but some of these lists are only partially transcribed (by me) so theymay have been missed. Muster roll 1685, Douwe Gerbrantsz is listed in Stellenbosch without any wife or children. in 1686 we have: Douwe Gerbrantz en Maritie Lesee (in this year no numbers of children are recorded). In 1700 Douwe Gerbrandt Steyn died and his widow married to Paul Heyns:; in 1701 in the Cape district we have: Paul Heyns & Maria Losle 7 k.; in 1712 in the Cape district we have: Paul Heyns & Maria Losee; 1715/6 Cape - Paul Heijns & [[Maria Loze ^[21]

He was a life long friend of Harmen Potgieter. They lived on a farm with with neighbours as families the "Potgieters" and the "Prinsloos" ^[21]

Noordhoorn is geleë in die Groningen provinsie, suid-wes van die stad Groningen. Die Potgieterfamilie het daar op 'n plaas gewoon met die families Steyn en Prinsloo as bure. Harmen was dan ook 'n lewenslange vriend van Douw Gerbrand Steyn. Sy dogter, Maria het later met Jacobus Steyn, die aangenome seun van Douw getrou en so die stammoeder van die Steyns in Suid-Afrika geword. Hy was een van die eerste bewoners van die nuwe nedersetting by die Eersterivier (Stellebosch), waar hy sy ambag as smit beoefen. Hy word deur De Wet gelys as smit 1674-1705. (de Wet GC, Die vryliede en vryswartes in die Kaapse nedersetting, p. 68). In 1688 het hy sy smitswinkel aan Lourens Verbrugge oorgedra vir die helfte van die wins (p. 107, verw 1STB 18/152 kontrak 1.12.1687). ^[22]

    Almost certainly this means that he had no other living heirs at that time - Roman Dutch law did not permit a parent to omit any of his or her children from inheriting - we can therefore, barring other evidence to the contrary, assume that at the time he made his will his only children were Aage and Anna (and possibly also Jacobus, though it seems very odd that he did not name him as one of his children if he was indeed the father).
