Biography

Sarah Sweat was born 5 May 1785 in Edgefield, South Carolina to Ephraim Sweat and Olive Perkins. [1]

Sarah sweat was one of a group of people in Louisiana called "Redbones", as her descent from the Sweat and Perkins lines makes fairly evident, and her community migrated to Louisiana in the first decade of the 19th century.

In the Martin reference by Millard Martin [2] it is suggested that she also married Zachariah Martin before marrying Amos Avery. This premise is supported by a memorial posting [3] which presumably pertains to her. From this, we learn that she did have a child by Zachariah Martin named Robert Martin, born May 1811, before she married Amos Avery.

Marriage to Amos Avery

According to the Daughters of the American Revolution, Sarah Sweat married the Amos Avery Jr., son of American Patriot Amos Avery Sr.[1][4], in 1808 [5]. Supporting documents relying upon bible records provide the exact date of 7 Feb 1808 [1], however this in itself differentiates the husband of Sarah Sweat from the other stated Amos Avery named individuals as listed in the DAR records. Sarah Sweat and her Amos Avery married much later, on 25 Apr 1819, in Wilkinson, Mississippi [6].

Sarah Sweat did indeed marry an Amos Avery [7]. He fought and was wounded in the Battle of New Orleans, and he was from Connecticut (cf Olive Avery Martin 1850 census for his birthplace). Importantly, the Amos Avery (1769-1838), son of Amos and Prudence Williams Avery, referred to in the Millard F Martin Sr. reference (and who has served as the basis for the DAR designation) was not the Amos Avery who was the husband of this Sarah Sweat. The other Amos Avery was married to Tabitha Stoddard, with whom he married in 1791, with whom he had several children in Connecticut, where he remained and continued to be active in Connecticut long after Sarah Sweat's husband was established by records in Louisiana. The other Amos Avery died and was buried in Barkhamsted, Connecticut, at a point in time (1838) when Sarah Sweat's husband was still alive.

There was another Amos Avery (1769-), son of Isaac Avery and Mercy Williams, born 16 Jun 1769 at Preston, Connecticut. This Amos lost his wife, Sarah (Starkweather), in 1800, and according to Debi Hattorf Whitmore, his "Body (was) lost or destroyed, Specifically: Amos traded with Indians in Western New York and did not return from a trip taken in 1812". It is not implausible that this Amos Avery could have migrated to the South and become the husband of Sarah Sweat, however there is insufficient evidence to conclude such identity at this time. Evidentiary tracing, perhaps via Y chromosome isozyme characterizations among their male descendancies, is encouraged, with the prospectus of either proving or refuting the equation.

Reuniting with Zachariah Martin

Sarah appears to have reunited with Zachariah Martin by the time of 1850 census when she, Zachariah, and her daughter, Mary Avery (then married to Simon Martin) were listed as living in Tyler County, Texas.[14] A look at the other pages in Tyler County show other children of Amos Avery and Sarah Sweat: Amos Avery,[9]Sarah who wed Seth Martin,[10] and Margaret who married S. Butler Kimball[15] Some family trees cite Sweat Families of the South by Erbon W Wise[16] and say that Sarah remarried Zachariah Martin in about 1836. Perhaps someone with access to this publication can add some details. It is noteworthy that in the 1840 US Census, Amos Avery no longer has a woman of the appropriate age living with him.[13]. This sequence of events prompts the premise that Sarah probably had separated from Amos Avery before 1840, then gone to Texas with Zachariah Martin.

Zachariah survived until 1873, and was buried in Texas, but it is claimed that Sarah either returned to Louisiana and was buried in "Occupy No.1 Cemetery" of Glenmora, Rapides Parish, Louisiana, or died in Texas and her body returned and buried to Occupy Cemetery. Although the Findagrave posting has a memorial for her, there is no photograph of a gravestone nor any probitive sourcing for it, therefore the place of her death and burial remain uncertain.

Sweat-86 and Sweat-139 appear to represent the same person because: From the information in your profile, there was virtually no possibility we are talking about the same person. I wanted to extend her tree back a couple of generations so far as accurate information can be obtained but have hesitated to attach her to Ephraim and Olive Perkins Sweat (creating duplicate Sarahs) . Since there was probably doubt as to my sources (actually back to Sarah Sweat and Amos Avery, my family still pretty much knows who was whom as a matter of course - but since there is no substitute for sources I cited Millard Martin's book on Zachariah Martin- I received a pre publication copy at a family gathering in Jourdanton). My main difference with Millard is that pretty clearly Zachariah and Sarah will not so easily have "married" and then been not married in 1812 Louisiana. But the sensibilities of Millard's reading audience required a more delicate treatment at the time. Additionally, with the advent of internet databases that compress years of research into hours, it was pretty clear that Sarah's husband was not Amos son of Amos but rather his second cousin Amos son of Isaac. This second Amos' disappearance in the west at just the right time coupled with his "widowed status" (there was an old family story about how he had been a sea captain who had endured a tragic loss of a loved one) make this far more likely. The remainder of the census and other citations you provided were precise and excellent. I hope that my request for merger meets with your approval.
