Help us find and improve next week's Connection Finder profiles: Napoleon and Co.

With the recent biopic in the theatres, we're looking at all things Napoleon next week in the Connection Finder, specifically those people he was associated with, friend and foe.

Here's who we're getting started on:

Who else should we feature? We have room for 12 notables. We can't feature everyone who is nominated, but if we don't feature a profile you work on, we may use it sometime in the future. And, of course, all contributions help improve our shared tree.

Our choice of features will depend partly on the notable person's CC7, i.e. their connection count within seven degrees. The more connections they have, the more likely it is for all WikiTree members to find a close and interesting connection to them. So, if you nominate someone, please help grow their CC7.

Suggestions are more likely to be considered if you provide a link to the person on WikiTree, some information about who they were or why you're nominating them, and if their profile is in good condition with a connection, image, and well-written and well-sourced biography.

We'll make a final decision on which ones to feature early next week.

Please reply here with what you're working on so that we don't duplicate our efforts. Thank you!

Take note that this is not the place to discuss why you think we shouldn't feature someone if those reasons are due to politics, actions, or opinions of those being suggested. Mentioning things like their not being connected, their biography still needing work, erroneous information, etc. are all suitable for discussion here and an opportunity to correct those situations.

Help us choose themes for 2024 Connection Finder themes here.

As his first wife, Josèphine (Tascher de La Pagerie) Bonaparte was both the Empress of the French as well as the Queen of Italy. The film focused heavily on their somewhat contentious relationship.

Yes but as husband and wife they're closely connected so I'm not sure having them both in the selection would be interesting

A great point Léa, I hadn't actually considered that for some reason. I still think, however, that many could find blood-line relationships through either her parents or the children of her first marriage to Alexandre Beauharnais that they otherwise wouldn't have been aware of. Connections through both marriage and blood are both interesting and fun to find for myself!

Thanks, Brian.

Richard Gower's writings and designs assisted with the naval warfare capabilities of the British Navy.

John Children who worked for the British Museum purchased the Waterloo Elm, the tree under which the Duke of Wellington had made his headquarters for the Battle of Waterloo. He had the tree made into several notable pieces of furniture by Thomas Chippendale the Younger. The furniture included the Waterloo Chair

According to Wikipedia, women in the film, in addition to Joséphine Tascher de La Pagerie already nominated by Brian, include:

I've added a biography and the Notables Sticker to the profile for Archduchess Marie-Louise. The CC7 should become visible within 24 hours.

Also: Marie Laczynska (1786–1817), Countess Waleska, Poland, CC7 3060, profile with image and biography. From 1806 to 1810, she had an intimate relationship with Napoleon, who noted her extraordinary conversation. She wrote in her memoirs that her goal had been patriotic, to influence him to support Polish independence from Prussia (see Wikipedia).

Two more:

Thanks, Jim.

We could feature Louis Alexandre Berthier, a Marshal of the Empire who served as Napoléon's longtime Chief of Staff.  His profile is well connected (CC7 as of writing is 2,175), contains a sourced biography, and has a portrait.

Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, one of Napoléon's marshalls, later chosen to be the new king of Sweden and ancestor of the current Swedish monarch.

Or, we could instead feature Bernadotte's wife Désirée Clary in order to have more women in the lineup. She was allegedly Napoléon's former flame and fiancée.

Both well connected as ancestors of the Swedish royal family.

Another woman: Madame Campan. Founder of a school for girls where many of Napoléon's relatives were educated, she was later chosen by Napoléon to head the newly created school for daughters of people who were awarded the Legion of Honour.

She is well connected through her niece, the wife of Marshall Ney, and her brother Edmond Genet's American wives.

She is also not too closerly connected to Napoléon himself (10 degrees) and would provide more variety in the connection paths.

The bio can be fleshed out during the week.

What about Emmanuel Joseph Sieyes...In 1799 was made Director of the Republic (Revolution). He and his allies overthrew the Directory to allow Napoleon Bonaparte to seize power, in the coup of 18 Brumaire.

Bonaparte, Sieyes and Roger Ducos were appointed as Consuls of the French Republic, after the coup.

Sieyès would be a good choice.  His profile can be found here.  His connection path to the global tree was quite distant, but I was able to shorten it somewhat today (the degree counts at the bottom of the profile may need a day to reflect it).

Thanks Greg. I might see if we are connected to him. I'm quite, quite, quite distant to Napoleon, he's my 18th cousin, however according to FS he is the husband of my 8th cousin 5 times removed…Marie Joseph’s Rose (Tascher de la Pagerie). Descendant appears to be Thomas Curzon. Not sure if this will help.
I'm connected but not related...
Thanks, Megan.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/De_Sade-2

The Marquis de Sade.

"The Napoleonic Consulate was cracking down on public immorality and, in March 1801, Sade was arrested at his publisher's office and detained in the Sainte-Pélagie Prison. The stocks of The New Justine and Juliette were seized and the police minister Joseph Fouché ordered Sade's detention without trial as he believed the pornography laws did not provide for sufficient punishment and any trial would only increase Sade's notoriety.[93] Following Sade's attempts to seduce young prisoners at Sainte-Pélagie, he was declared insane with "libertine dementia" and transferred to the Bicêtre Asylum.[9"

One of the commanders who fought in the Battle of Leipzig against Napoleon was Karel Filip, Prince of Schwarzenberg. The loss at Battle of Leipzig forced Napoleon to abdicate.

by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
CC7 = 861

When I prepared his profile, I added his wife, who was before the wife of Anton Esterhazy. By connecting him, Karel Filip's CC7 went up to 1014.

The German version of his biography is done. Translation coming.
Translation done.
Thanks, Jelena.
