Ralph Calhoun was the only child of Ralph Sr. and Lois Calhoun. He spent his youth in and around Chattahoochee, Florida where he hunted and fished Lake Seminole and the Apalachicola River. Summers were spent with his Grandparents Arthur and Pearl Calhoun in Mayo, FL where he helped with the farm, working in sun tobacco. He accompanied his grandfather and uncle Taft fishing the local cypress ponds, trapping, and most exciting, gator hunting in the swamps of Lafayette County. He graduated Valedictorian of Chattahoochee High School and attended Chipola Junior College, the University of West Florida, and Florida State University where is was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Theoretical Physics. He married Abigail McKeown and they had three children, Jennifer, Amy, and Jonathan. They were divorced in the late 1990's. Among his many careers, he taught physics and engineering at a number of colleges and universities, was principal in an engineering company started in the 1980's, served has a corporate VP for and Board member of a large engineering and construction company. He married Marsha Kliendienst in 2001 and they started a custom home construction company. He is both a licensed certified builder and electrician in the state of Florida. Currently they are retired, spending winters on their boat in the Keys and enjoying boating and traveling. [1] My most distant known Calhoun ancestor is Noah Calhoun born Abt 1765 in the Carolinas. Noah was in Capt. Cowles militia around 1800. He was later awarded a land grant for a section of land in Spanish West Florida, 1818, now Santa Rosa County, Fl. Although there is some data to suggest William Cahoon b. 1632 Scotland is the first Calhoun in our family to come to America. This needs to be sourced. The connection to Noah is well sourced and the FamilytreeDNA results provide solid evidence. William Leland Calhoun and I are 3rd half cousins. His great Grandfather was John Pinckney Calhoun, first son of John Calvin Calhoun and Pamelia. My Great Grandfather was Jefferson C., son of John Calvin Calhoun and second wife Sara Ann Elizabeth Hobbs. Our DNA is consistent with those relationships. John Calvin is thought to have had an illegitimate son with a Slade who was a neighbor in the Lafayette County 1860 census. Fred Slade, a descendant of that family is a close DNA match to William and myself. William, first family, and myself, second family have two other common connections: the Darleys, descendants of Penelope Darley and James I. Calhoun, both of Montgomery County who never married, and Robert W. Calhoun who is descended from Burrell (Burrill), who was James I. ‘s Father. FamilytreeDNA Y matches for myself has these results. Another strong connection is found in the well-documented Familial Tremor that affects members of both John C. families. Dr. Jankovic researched the Familial tremor affecting the Santa Rosa County Calhoun’s. [2] , [3]

I sent you a check-in message a week ago about the US Southern Colonies Project to ask you about your continued involvement but have not yet heard back from you. Do you still want to be in the project? If I don’t hear from you by the same time next week I’ll assume that you’ve moved on to other things but you’re most welcome to re-join the project at any time.
I see a comment on your page, but am not sure it pertains to Southern Colonies.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Best wishes,

Thanks!
P.S. I'm glad to see that you have the United States Project badge. That is the parent project for the Southern Pioneers Project, not US Southern Colonies Project. The US Southern Colonies Project covers colonists (pre-USA) of Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas & Georgia. There is some overlap of the scope of the two projects (Southern Pioneers & US Southern Colonies), so we many people join both projects.
As you will have seen, we have been doing some restructuring in the US Southern Colonies Project and are now organising ourselves into different teams. We have also changed the criteria for membership. Please have a look at the new project pages, and let me know whether you would like to remain in the project and, if so, which team(s) you would like to be in.
Please can you also send me your e-mail address. I can then make sure you are introduced to your Team Leaders and are in the Google Group.
Please note that it is a requirement for membership in the US Southern Colonies Project that you respond to these check-ins. We’re really excited for the future of the project and hope that you decide to be a part of it with us moving forwards.
Many thanks,
Susie, US Southern Colonies Project Co-Leader
Thank you so much for responding to our check-in for the Southern Colonies and Southern Pioneers
We are sorry to hear that you are not currently active, but we understand that life happens, interests shift as we grow our shared tree and that some members may have moved on to projects more pertinent their ancestors
The badge will be removed.
You will always be welcome to rejoin the Southern Colonies, when your interests shift back in this direction. Your profiles will always be there for you to update, source more, add stickers, etc. When you become active in this area, just apply on g2g.
Thank you so much for your participation; we genuinely appreciate it.

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!
Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working within the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.
Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus, whether time period, location, or special event. Read the goals and tasks of the project and join if it is a good fit.
Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Wish you a Happy New Year. May 2018 bring you all you need to be happy.
Congratulation for adding your contributions in December. Whatever the quantity of your contributions, they all count. As we always say "Quality is better than quantity" to make a great family tree.
Thank you for being a Wikitreer,

PS Sometimes links don't work in emails. You can always find a link that works in the public comments on your profile.
There's a fast and easy way to access those profiles using the Watchlist. So, this week we're going to look at How to Manage Your Watchlist.
Please let one of us know if you have questions! Sometimes links don't work in emails. If that's happened to you, check the public comments on your profile. The links will work from there.

You've been here for several weeks now! We hope your profiles are starting to come together and that you've enjoyed getting to know all of us a little better.
You're probably getting a good feel for the collaborative nature of WikiTree by now. We know that collaboration isn't always easy. So, we've put together a few pointers that can make working in this type of environment a little easier: How to be a Successful WikiTreer.
