Notes

In the book by Goodridge, Paul F. "William Brockman Bankhead" Page Publishing, Incorporated: 2015. (Summary: William Brockman Bankhead’s heritage was traced to sixteen family branches established by each of his individual great great-grandparents) there is some information about the Collins family from Isle of Wight which may be useful as there is a marriage connection between the Brockman and Collins families in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Specifically, the author discusses the parentage of Captain John Collins . He writes that John Collins he is the son of Joseph Collins (1668–1748) and Catherine Robertson (1668–1728)

Likely the discrepancy was a result of mis-attached descendant information You are right/ There is a mis-match on the DNA here, because Joe Creed Collins and John Carlton Collins who both show as direct paternal descendants of Joseph "Robinson" Collins who married Susannah Lewis are different Y Haplogroups. That indicates Joe Creed Collins or John Carlton Collins likely has a misattributed father in his direct paternal line. Their most recent common direct paternal ancestor is Edward Collins Sr. I hope that more Collins males from this line who have Y DNA tested will join WikiTree to help solve the mystery. Additional information: Joseph was the paternal sixth great-grandfather of Tallulah Bankhead (Collins|Old Thomas Collins was not the son of Joseph Collins and Susannah Lewis)

Ed, Thank you very much for your reply. I don't quite understand your merge objection here. Common Logic tells you same sources=same individual. The underlying children were all named in Joseph's Will of 1757, which establishes the connection of the three Joseph's being the father and Susannah as the mother (as early as 1737); hence the same Joseph/Susannah/11 children. All are listed in the Pruitt Books; Birth and Marriage dates (obviously) are defined on "Final" copy as "Estimates" but are based upon/or established from profile narratives and IGI records; surviving Land records, etc., all of which are included on the profiles themselves, Again, on the "final" these will need to be reorganized; refined and dups deleted with the narrative refined to a final format with in-line sources, (with correct attachments/soft links and/or definitive explanations as to discrepancies), etc. The bio on Collins-20708 seems to be the most "up to date" info at present (most corrections have been made here) and once "all" information is in the same place, other info will be compared against this w/adjustments made accordingly, If you are saying the Collins-20708 bio is inaccurate, then you should refine this bio info and provide your in-line sources for support. As far as the children - these also will need to be reviewed individually (once merges completed). The only obvious error (at this time) seems to be the wife of James (TBD).

Question: In the Joseph Collins Notes, above, it states that Joseph's son James was "already in North Carolina" at the time of Joseph's death or at least the proving of the will.

But I can't find anything about James Collins (husband of Mary Kirtley) that puts him in North Carolina at this time. This is right about tthe time of his marriage to Mary, IN Virginia. this may mean that this Joseph is not the father of the James Collins attached to this profile?

posted by Karen Hardesty
Joseph's birthdate may not be correct - it would make him too young to be the father of some of his children. Or perhaps the children are incorrect.

My third cousin Karen Allman and I are actively researching Collins DNA through autosomal and YDNA. You see her mother Donna (Campbell) Jean and my mother Sylvia (Emery) Lewis as DNA descendants on this page. I also am working with our cousin Joe Creed Collins on his Y DNA. We are awaiting his Y700 result. There is a mis-match on the DNA here, because Joe and John Carlton Collins who both show as direct paternal descendants of Joseph "Robinson" Collins are different Y Haplogroups indicating there may be a misattributed father in one of their lines. Their most recent common direct paternal ancestor is Edward Collins Sr. I hope that more Collins males from this line who have Y DNA tested will join WikiTree to help solve the mystery.

Different ydna haplogroups mean they are not related to each other and had different paternal ancestors. Unless it’s the big Y and they are in the same block tree branch.

So what are their haplogroups?

posted by Ed Street
John Carleton Collins is R and Joe Creed Collins is I-M223. They are both linked to this profile. I am awaiting the Big Y test result for Joe. John is deceased so cannot be contacted. I am also encouraging other I-M223 Collins men to join WikiTree. One Collins descendant who matches Joe and is I-M223 has taken the Y700 already so Joe's upgrade to Y700 will tell us whether they create a new branch in the Ytree. My third cousin Karen Allman and I are working on figuring out the Y and autosomal DNA matchpoints between him and Joe. We both actively use the DNA confirmation tool on our Collins line as well.
posted by Terri (Lewis) Stern
OH, their common ancestor is oh 125,000 years ago between R and I haplogroups. May have had a number of reasons for the mismatch and still be in the family, like adoption, unfaithful, criminal, etc.. However, multiple sources would be super helpful in ruling out family members.
posted by Ed Street
Yes, I am aware of that. Adoption, unfaithful, criminal are all what I referred to as "a misattributed father in one of their lines." Karen and I are working with the Collins Clean-Up team on our line shared by Joe Creed Collins with quality sources and DNA Confirmation.
