Hi! Thank you for your contributions to the profile of James Mann (abt.1745-abt.1814). Although WikiTree says he's my 5-gr-grand, it's only because this is a wiki. I know my gr-gr-grandmother is Lucinda (Malone) Gaulding and that her parents were Thomas and Frances Malone and that Thomas married Frances W. Mann in Georgia (marriage license 24 May 1827).<ref>transcription, image (which looks like Monroe County, which is what the full FS citation has, but the index says Morrow).</ref> Frances's profile says Thomas was her 2nd husband and lists a __ Dumas as her first. But maybe between the two was a Mr. Mann? Records of marriage licenses don't always distinguish between a maiden name and a widow's surname. So Frances's maiden name and origins, I'm not so sure of. If you have anything to shed light on Frances's connection to the Manns, I would love to hear it!
  1. Liz is the daughter of Betty (Brien) Noland [confident]
  2. Betty is the daughter of Elizabeth (Watkins) Brien [confident]
  3. Elizabeth is the daughter of Lula (Gaulding) Watkins (1871-1958) [confident]
  4. Lula is the daughter of Lucinda J (Malone) Gaulding (abt.1831-aft.1900) [confident]
  5. Lucinda is the daughter of Frances W. (Mann) Malone (1801-) [confident]
  6. Frances is the daughter of John Mann (1767-1841) [unknown confidence]
  7. John is the son of James Mann (abt.1745-abt.1814) [unknown confidence]
This makes James the fifth great grandfather of Liz.

ack! It's been too long since I've looked at the Manns. John's profile has a will abstract that names Frances his daughter and Thomas Malone his son-in-law:
Will of John Mann, written 2/10/1841, proved 7/5/1841<ref>Posted on his FindAGrave memorial (#78559942), citing Monroe Co. Will Abstracts "A" 1824 - 1847, page 182</ref>
Wife: Polly W.
Children: Worsham J., John J., Stephen A., Thomas J., Acy V., Frances Malone, Sarah K. Akin.
Son in law: Thomas Malone.
Grch: Richard F., James W., John R., Sarah F., Mary L., Nancy M., Elizabeth A., Rebecca M., Martha J., Wesley B. and William W. Mann and James B. Key in rt of his wife, Harriet L.
Exrs: Wife, Stephen A. Mann, Thomas J. Mann

So... It's just John's parents in question at this point.

and... court records concerning the estate of John Johns, who died before 22 October 1778 (date of a court case filed in Amelia County, Virginia), includes "James Mann in right of his wife Judith" among his children. His profile also has supporting information for his wife Judith's maiden name being Tanner.

Hi Liz, my Mann family and the Manns who connect to Elbert County, GA lived all over Georgia during the early 1800s, often with some of the same first names. My Manns ended up in Monroe County around 1850, but 10-15 miles north (now in Lamar County) of where John Mann's family lived in Monroe. So, I've seen references to John Mann for many years. He was on the 1815 Tax List of Elbert County along with brothers Jeremiah and James, plus his son Worsham, and then appears to be on the 1820 census of Elbert County, age 45+, with 4 younger males, 1 F under 10, and wife 45+. (His sister Martha's husband Henry Shackelford was on the same page of the census).

Regarding the parents of John's father James, in Amelia County, VA, there is a document around 1780 for a James Mann whose father was deceased, but whose mother was Sarah in the deed. I think he also had a brother Robert mentioned in the legally recorded document. My distant cousin, who lives in VA and does research there, said this is likely the Catlett Mann family, a guy who died in Amelia, VA around 1769. (probably a different extended Mann family than mine, due to Y-DNA testing of male descendants of your Manns versus mine).

Thanks so much. That info is helpful.

I've redone James' profile and will detach him from the SC Robert & Susan later tonight.

Could you take a look? Specifically, is this statement in the Mann-4628#Mann Family Research section ok?

The following was posted by W. Mann, perhaps a representative of "Mann Family Research Foundation" (cited as source on a profile created in May 2021).[14]

Hi Liz, I might choose a different word for me than "representative" of the MFRF, such as a contributor (I've assisted with some of their research, but I'm not one of the people who operate the group). I think your evaluation on that profile is well-done. I became aware of problems with some family histories when running across DAR applications from decades ago that made little sense based on the info that was currently available (in fact, researchers accidentally created a totally fictitious man in the general area of Elbert County, a man who never existed, by misinterpreting old records in an effort to join the DAR). This led me to question the confusing info I've seen over the past 20 years regarding your Elbert County Manns as well.

In my Mann family, the old family story was that we were German, maybe with a dash of Irish somehow mixed in. My dad and others had heard that his entire life. Only in 2020, when I took the Y-DNA test via FTDNA, did I discover that our Mann family was English for sure (my group of Manns share a specific Y-DNA that is only traced to a specific group of Manns (Y-DNA T-M70). So, the family story was completely wrong, except for a few details regarding where they had lived in Georgia at one time.

In early 2023, when I found the legal document regarding a James Mann of Amelia County, VA, I asked one of the MFRF's primary researchers how this James Mann could have linked to our family, since many of our Manns were in Amelia at that time. His reply was that he did NOT connect, and that he is believed to connect to the Manns of Elbert County via Catlett Mann. The document was the will of a Robert Mann of Amelia, from September 1782, which mentioned his mother Sarah, plus brothers James and John. I can share a link for this will, if you have an Ancestry account (if not, let me know).

By the way, your Manns appear to belong to the R-M269 Y-DNA group.

Thanks so much for the additional information. I don't have an Ancestry account.

Hi W,

Thank for creating a pre-1700 profile for Mary Unknown (abt.1700-abt.1735). You cited Mann Family Research Foundation, May 2021 ... could you add some more info? For example, if there's a link to a specific page, a name of an article, etc. Full citations are important on shared pre-1700 profiles as others will want to see where you got your information. For more info, see: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources

Thanks! Traci

Hello W.,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

I’m going to suggest that the England project might fit your current research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Please take your time. Accuracy is so much more important than speed on WikiTree. And please add locations, dates, and at least one reliable source to each profile, particularly any pre-1700s profile, before you leave it. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.
