I have taken both Ancestry and 23&Me DNA tests to confirm that my dad, who raised me, isn't my biological father. I have figured out who my genetic father was.

I also have a tree on familysearch.org. I am a little difficult to find because my mother is listed with my step-dad. Search instead for my father, Lewis Bray, GSWQ-B2Q

I am still a descendant of Abraham Preble, the first Preble in America b. 1602/03 in Wooten, Kent, ENGLAND, thanks now to my mother. For years I did Preble research before I got the DNA surprise mentioned above. So I have lots of info on Prebles in the USA.

Biography

I am graduate of the Winchester, Massachusetts school system, K-12. I was a B/B+ student at WHS, not National Honor Society, and was told to expect to be a C/C+ student in college. I worked part time during my entire college career, and barely cracked a book, and graduated cum laude from Tufts as an EE! All I ever needed to know I learned before I got to college. And one of my classmates went on to win the Heisman trophy! High School was great!

While in college, I met and married the love of my life. We just celebrated our 62nd anniversary. What would the oracle say about getting married on March 32nd? We did.!

I am a retired software engineer, a graduate of Tufts University, a life member of Tau Beta Pi. I became vitally interested in genealogy in 1977. While working in Cambridge, I went to the Boston Public Library to see what they had on Preble. They brought out this dusty old tome in a bankers box, with the pages falling out, George Henry Preble's "First Three Generations of Prebles in America". Someone remarked, I should go over a few blocks to the New England Historical Genealogical Society. I attended a welcome night there with Gary Boyd Roberts, and I was hooked.

I did a ton of work on Prebles and collaborated with Col. Charles Preble of Annadale, VA, RIP, and still converse with attorney Gary Preble, of Olympia, WA.

Then came DNA. When mine came back, I only had half the DNA I should have had with my brother's child. And lots of strangers with almost as close DNA. After contacting some of them, I figured out who my real father was. He was a good friend of my parents, a lifelong musician (used to play the theatre organ to accompany silent movies), and also our piano tuner!

All was not totally lost, however, since my mother also has a Preble connection in her line due to a previous Skillings-Preble marriage. I am still a descendant of the first Preble Immigrant, Abraham Preble, Preble-10, the common ancestor of the first Prebles in America mentioned above. About 1636 he emigrated from Wooten, Kent, England to Scituate, Mass Bay Colony, with other "Men of Kent", and removed to York, where he was a prominent resident. His great grandson was Commodore Edward Preble, commander of the USS Constitution in the Barbary War.

Hi Harry,

I'm not on the trusted list, so can't complete the merge either. The profile manager of Junkins-265 hasn't been active for a while, so you may have to wait for the 30 day default approval to happen. At that point, any member who has signed the Honor Code will be able to complete the merge.

Regarding Preble-84, the profile has open privacy and the Last Name at Birth (LNAB) does not need to be changed. You can work on it as much as you want. I do suggest reviewing the Help:Communication_Before_Editing to familiarize yourself with what is OK to change and what should be discussed first.

Hi again, Harry

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

The England and United States Projects may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Have questions? Let me know by using the "reply" link under my comments or by clicking my name to visit my profile. From there you can leave a comment or send a private message.

Karen ~ Pre-1700 Greeter

Hi Karen,

Thank you for the encouragement.

I don't know when I'll be ready for other people's projects; I've got plenty of my own right now. I have a Mayflower connection to a passenger that I will hook in shortly, discovered through my DNA testing when I learned that my dad was not my father; and another to the father of a passenger who came to America shortly after his son. So maybe I'll join the Mayflower Project. However, if you look at my tree, you will see that I am still a descendant of the first Preble in America, Abraham, thanks to my mother.

My wife is a descendant of Adrian Hegeman, a Dutch immigrant who was in Peter Styvesant's church on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. He is in WikiTree, but unfortunately not much of his line to Rena is.

So, I have a lot of work to do.

As a newbie here, I have spent a lot of time looking around WikiTree, especially at profiles and sources. I see a lot of nice stuff. But how did it get there?

The Link to How to be a good WikiTreer is fine, but it starts with 1. Cite Sources.

What I need is a tutorial on how to write sources, how to capture sources from Ancestry or Family Search and bring them to my source list.

For that matter, How do I use my source list?

I can't cite efficiently until I can write efficiently, and use tools efficently.

Hi Harry,

There is a program to help you learn how to create biographies that honor your ancestors, including how to write citations for your sources. If you are interested, you can find out more about that on the Profile Improvements Project (PIP) Voyage page.

Please do let me know if you have any questions about how WikiTree works, even if they seem minor. My rule of thumb when I started was to search for an answer for five minutes, then reach out to my Greeters, and then resume searching. I might have found the answer before they got back to me but they sometimes offered a different way of doing the same thing which was easier. We are always here to help. By the way, be sure to use the reply link under our comments so that notification emails get sent to the person you are trying to contact. New comments on your own profile do not alert anyone. I happened to find your questions because of some other duties I was taking care of.

See you in the branches,

Debi ~ WikiTree Greeter

I am in the process of digesting your comments.

Most of the people I have added are sourced in the book Memoirs of Robert F. Skillings, and I keep cutting and pasting the reference. If/when I find it on a free server I will have to go back and edit each profile.

I just read about creating sources in "free space". That sounds better. But I see no examples, or missed them. Can you please send me a link?

Thanks for noticing my post.

Harry

Hi Harry,

Sorry for the delay. A free-space page for the book is a great way to go so that others could use them as a resource also. More information about doing that can be found at the How to Share Sources FAQ. You can see an example in one I created for a family history book written by a cousin: The Campbells Are. You can find lots of other examples on this Source Directory Category page.

Let me know if you have any questions; I'm here to help,

Hi Debi,

I have somehow added a 2nd spouse for Jedediah Preble, Preble-84 twice and I don't know how to delete the extra one. This happened when I was trying to add the marriage date.

Could you please take a look and let me know. I am a descendant of the first wife, but so far WikiTree doesn't know I am related to Jedidiah, the Brigadier General who briefly served in the Revolutionary War, and once had breakfast with my cousin George Washington.

Thanks, Harry

Hi Harry,

When there is more than one profile for the same person, the process is to merge the one with the higher number into the lower numbered profile. There is an "initiate merge" at the bottom of each profile. Start the process from the profile with the higher number. You can read more about the merging process in this FAQ:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Merging

Let me know if you have any questions or would like me to initiate the merge process.

I hope this helps,

Debi

Thanks for pointing me to merge instructions. I have started the merge, but am not on the trusted list. Maybe you can finish it (Junkins-400). I would love to become manager of Preble-84, since he is my ancestor, which makes me still a Preble, even though DNA tried to prove otherwise.

Hi Harry,

I see that you have managed to get the upgrade to work, that's great!

To change your gender go to "edit" , gender can be found just below the box for "Death Place" and comes in the form of a dropdown box. Don't forget to click "save changes".

Have you been able to get your DNA to work? I see that it is uploaded, and I hear that the pages that Ginny has linked below are fantastic. To get the most out of DNA you need as many ancestors as you can find.

Let me know if you are still having any issues.

Kindest regards, Pam
