July Sourcerer's Challenge!

One thing that will always make WikiTree a better place to work on our shared family history is good sources. Unfortunately, many profiles still lack these. A good number are from old gedcom uploads before the Forest Elf started watching out for sourcing on uploads and many others are from additions from folks who just didn't know better or were going to add sources later and have forgotten. We have a place to deposit these profiles that need help: Category:Unsourced_Profiles. There, many profiles are even broken down geographically to help you find where you can help. Many Leaders have brought up a Sourcerer's Project idea, but we thought a challenge would be fun (thank you Leaders for the ideas!).

Here's the fun part-

We want to give our members some incentive, even more than the fact that we're making our tree that much better and reliable, and we'd like to encourage you all to add good sources to profiles. Good can be debatable, it's true, but at this point we're thinking anything other than referencing just another tree is good, so census data, BMD records/index references, family bible references, military documents, land documents, wills, etc. all help us with having a better sourced tree.

We're creating a challenge with two travelling badges to let you show off your sourcing prowess a bit.

Each month we'll post in G2G to start up the month's challenge. You come and post the profile you've added source(s) to (at least the profile number/name, if not a link to it) as well as what sources you added and at the end of the month, we'll tally for a winner. You only need to answer the post once, and just edit your post to add your new profiles. I will post an example after this so you can see what I mean.

* All profiles improved *MUST* come from the Unsourced categories or be already present on WikiTree and unsourced-you can't create new profiles and add sources just to up your tally. The hope and goal is to improve the numbers already on WikiTree that need sources. Adding sources will help merges happen, too, which will improve our tree. Showing folks what sources you're using helps newer researchers see just what's available out there for us to access.

* The tally is of profiles improved, not sources added.

* If you attempt to add sources to a profile and just cannot find any, please add a note under a section like === Research Notes === giving where you tried to find records and you can sign it with the four tildes (~~~~) so the date is applied as well. Something like "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry" would be fine. Or, "Searched google for an obituary and didn't find one." That way the next researcher knows where to start.

We are now actively in our July Challenge, which will run through July 31.  Ask any questions here in the thread, otherwise, GO!

See Sourcerer's Challenge for current information.

Thanks Abby you did a great job as well !

Still searching for more and 'real' sources of course, working on the Dutch Roots Project of course this is what we do almost all the time for many of these gedcom uploaded lineages . Sorting out , improving and try source Pre-1700 and younger profiles.  That's what the project was meant for in the first place , and really love it  laugh

Guess many of our members deserve sourcerer badges and are great ''sourcerers'' , but a challenge is a great approach and  very motivating so a great way to a large amount of profiles sourced ! So my compliments for this great idea  !!

Thanks Anne :)  Will keep doing as I have been and removing the unsourced tag :)
well a late start on the sourcerer's challenge for me only found it purely by accident

Irena Gould  Adkins-2202 added link for marriage certificate link ( still needs last name corrected)

Jarvis Barker  Barker-5241 added death certificate link / certificate also has parents names

Ethel Baldwin  Baldwin-6413 added birth certificate link correct name at birth information

Charles Faulkner  Faulkner-712 added death certificate , place of birth  and place of death ,death certificate also includes parents names

Lucy Arnold  Arnold-5366 added link for birth certificate
There will be another one next month David. Thank you.
good i will keep an eye on files needing sources. I am guilty also for sources the vast amount of people i have entered are from family records so I still have to go step by step back over my entries and enter sources also so will be doing those over the next couple weeks.

Also if anyone needs Vermont records i have a Vermont.gov access account to  view all Vermont archive information on file via Ancestory.com for free . Be aware not all files are on record in archives due in part that some towns did not send all records up. and very old records are sketchy at best due to of conflicts of new york and New Hampshire land grant disputes as a result some records were destroy on purpose by conflicting settlers. Prior to that parts of of current  Vermont and New York state were parts of Canada with records being recorded by priest.
Great work, David. You should create a post offering your Vermont research help using our Offers of Genealogy Help area of G2G. We're always looking for more folks willing to help do lookups for others!

Hi David,

Do you have any Vermont records on Merzy / Mirza Skinner born 1795 in Orange (could be Orange the Township or Orange the county)?  I have his wife and descendants but am lacking information about his parents.  His father is only indicated as H. J. Skinner.  Here is his WikiTree profile:

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Skinner-2347

I really appreciate your offer, thank you!

Simpson-947: found him in the 1871 and 1891 censuses. (censi?)
Is the challenge an ongoing monthly thing? I'm aware of a lot of unsourced profiles, cat and in-cat, that I can pull into the World of WikiTree Sourced Profiles.
Hi Bob,

Yes. We'll start a new thread each month for that month's challenge. If you check out this month's thread (I see you already started there-great work!) there's a link to the page for the Challenge, and we'll keep track of the various top Sourcerers there for bragging rights and all ;-)

Nice! So this had no sources to start with?  AWESOME JOB!!  Now this is something I might find time to do a bit of too and I LOVE the way this will help document pages.  I've been adding the Unsourced template to profiles I've come across the past month or so, since first taking note of it, as a way of marking ones that need work when I didn't have time.  :)  Thx for coming up with this idea for putting a focus on sourcing!  I know I have some I need to do still, but I'm slowly working through those... time time time!  I need a clone! LOL

Nice work, Kathie. Thank you! I love the narrative cleanup you're doing while at the same time adding sources.

You might want to add a bit more information to "Tombstone Inscription" -- for example, the name and location of the cemetery.

1. Earl Furgerson added 1930 census and marriage record. Added daughter's death record

2. Owena Woolf added source (tombstone photo on findagrave, not my preferred choice, but it's a child who died age 3, between census, luckily there is an actual marker photo and it has initials of parents to substantiate the link).

3. Martha Ann (Jones) Atchison added marriage record; added 1850 census.

4. Sarah R (Jones) Boucher added marriage record, 1830 census for spouse

Thx Star, but I am still here and still sourcing away, just not posting them on the thread as I'm trying to get as much done as I can and haven't had time to add to the list--sourcing is what's important to me, more than the 'credit' for it on the thread.  LOL

The following four were all children of the same couple. They all died young and although I searched many web sites, only found references to them at Find A Grave. Perhaps someone who has access to pay sites may be able to find birth or death certificates. ?

1. Giegal Yates-369, Find A Grave Memorial #39513924. Born and died the same day.

2. H. P. Yates-366, Find A Grave Memorial# 39513925. Died a little over a year after birth.

3. S. M. Yates-368, Find A Grave Memorial# 39513927. Not quite a year old at death.

4. Steller Yates-367, Find A Grave Memorial# 39513928. Born and died the same day.

5. Edmond Withers-899, Find A Grave Memorial# 23665336, 1900 & 1910 Atlanta, Georgia census records

6. Jessie Williams-4622, 1900, 1910, 1920 census records of Catoosa Co., GA, death record

Abby,

Is the tally at the end of the month the number of profiles or number of sources?

If I add two census records to one unsourced profile is that a count of 1 or 2?
by Philip Smith G2G6 Pilot (340k points)
Philip, somewhere up there, Abby said it's the number of profiles.
Nan,

You must have better eyes than I do, I have reread it multiple times (both before and after your note) and I don't see it.  Can you highlight it?

Phil
Philip--I had the same question. Abby answered it down in the thread of comments.
Beulah,

Thank you.  With your help I did find it.
Philip, I'm glad I could help.  Your question layed it out in a much clearer form, however.
Sorry, I had to go take care of farm stuff. I will add that to the main post, as well as some of the other clarifications that have come about. Thanks everyone!
Abby, is any attention being paid to the quality of the sources being added? Or just the number?
I will do some checking to verify as necessary. As I mentioned in the main post above, the aim is for "good" sources-BMD records, census, wills, that sort of thing, but not other web trees. So yes, quality counts. That's also why I wanted folks to list here what they're adding so it's easier to see what's being done and so newer members can see what good/better sources look like.

One issue is that on almost all of these, I then find that the parents/spouses/siblings are also unsourced, just weren't listed there yet.

Do you mean they weren't in the Unsourced category yet? I think we're going to go with any profiles with no sources will count. We'll work on the honor system, but it's easy enough to see if sources were there before or not. So, if you add the sources, put them here!
These had no sources at all.  My comment was that in addition, many family members don't have any sources, as well.  Some I added to the unsourced page.   Are we not supposed to add them to that page.

Out of curiosity, does adding sources to the additional ones count?  Or should I not have added them all, because if someone else finds them and adds sources, it wouldn't count for them, because they weren't there before today?
Yes, they count as well. So long as the profiles aren't new creations and they have no sources, they can count if you add sources to them. There are so many profiles without sources, adding sources to as many as possible will be fantastic. You don't have to add them to the category, unless you come across them and don't have time to add sources yourself.

I got to my 20th profile or so in Unsourced:Indiana and noticed that Odie (Lowe) Baire shares my maiden name and was born in east Tennessee like my father. Yep, she's my grandfather's third cousin. So now she has a source (more soon) and is connected to AJ and the global tree. Sweet!

ooooo, nice! I love when that sort of thing happens. It's why I linger in the Arkansas and Iowa categories :-)

I'm actually adding the "unsourced Acadian" tag to some of mine that i entered based on family notes, (I actually have some entries that will be based on notes my great aunt wrote on the inside of her travelling trunk!)  Maybe this will get me some help in sourcing some of these!

added source for baptism in 1753 and marriage in 1800 of Joseph Keats-135

Should have stopped there. Went on to find children, occupation, and then a source for the 1827 burial date as on the profile and that's where it went wrong. The death was for a 49 year old Joseph; far too young for this one.Now I've found that there was a Joseph living in the village of the right age. He makes far more sense for the marriage as well.

(thank you to AnneB below for telling me how to make links)

To turn them into links. Copy the URL from the website. When you have the answer box open. Type in example Keats-137, type a few extra spaces. Then highlight Keats-137 and click on the icon for linking. The icon is top line, right side, looks like a flat blue globe on a stand. A new box opens - paste the URL into the appropriate box. And 'OK'

And I have no clue why you can't copy/paste into this box. I do all the time.
Thanks, I'll try that.

I've just had a go copying and pasting with a different browser.  This time it said that my settings prevented direct copying and pasting but I could paste into a box. It worked. The odd thing is that I have had no problems pasting elsewhere on the site.
Great work, Helen!

I know the links are confusing. G2G works differently than elsewhere on WT.

We miss you in the October Sourcerers Challenge, Helen. Come join the fun!

In addition to adding sources, I have also added biography's.  I've also added data to some profiles as I've found records with information that was not on the profile, such as date of death of first wife and name of second wife with date of second marriage, etc.  So far I've been lucky to find quite a bit of data with good sources.

1. John Berry Watts (Watts-759): added detailed biography, and added sources: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900 & 1910 Federal Census'; Union Co., Ga marriage record, Civil War Pension application, burial at Find A Grave.  Of children listed in profile, only one was listed as unsourced, but all children's profile had no sources listed.

2. James Melvin Watts (Watts-758): added biography; added sources: 1880, 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 Federal Census'; photo and burial at Find A Grave.

3. William Harvey Williams (Williams-4642): added biography; added sources: 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, and 1920 Federal Census', and Find A Grave.  Also added information on records prior to 1883 were destroyed in courthouse fire.

4. Addie Estella Seabolt Williams (Seabolt-12) wife of William Harvey Williams: added biography; added sources: 1880, 1900, and 1920 Federal Census', and Find A Grave.

5. Walter Mashburn Williams (Williams-4646) son of Williams-4642 and Seabolt-12: added biography; added sources, 1900, 1910, and 1920 Federal Census', marriage record from Walker Co., Ga., and Find A Grave.

6. Hardie G. Williams (Williams-4647) son of Williams-4646: added biography; added sources: 1930 and 1940 Federal Census'; World War II Draft Registration Card; Military Service in U.S. Coast Guard, and Find A Grave.

7. Ray Lebron Williams (Williams-4648) son of Williams-4646: added biography; added sources: 1930 and 1940 Federal Census'; and Find A Grave.

8. Harvey M. Williams (Williams-4633): added biography; added sources: 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 Federal Census', and Find A Grave.

9. Mary Ann Bryan Williams (Bryan-294): added biography; added sources: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910 Federal Census' and Find A Grave.

10. John Elihu Williams (Williams-4641); added biography; added sources: 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900 Federal Census'; and Find A Grave.

12, Arthur Glenn Williams (Williams-4644): added biography; added sources: 1870, 1880, and 1900 Federal Census', 1883 marriage record from Walker Co., Ga., and Find A Grave.

13. Carl Cicero Williams (Williams-4631): added biography; added sources: 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 Federal Census', marriage records for first and second marriage in Walker Co., Ga., World War I Draft Registration, and Find A Grave.

14. Thomas Lee Williams (Williams-4643): added biography; added sources: 1870 and 1880 Federal Census' and Find A Grave.

Perfect timing:  Here's an additional challenge.  It's regarding Surnames, One Name Studies AND ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT local genealogy resources and related categories!!!

See: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Lockhart_Name_Study

1.Add the template to a  Lockhart [insert any name] profile ONLY those whose last name at birth was Lockhart (so no wives who became a Lockhart by marriage)

2.Add the location of the Lockhart [insert any name] in the following format: This County, State, Lockharts IF it comes up RED then that location/category hasn't been created...either let ME know or I will watch the "wanted categories" section and will take care of it. NOTE: the commas, punctuation are all important. If you have one letter off, it won't set up correctly...I can fix them as long as the profiles aren't restricted via the privacy setting.

3.If you find any information/websites that pertain to the area/location for Lockharts [insert any name] or the location add the links to the respective category page so that others can benefit...that's another reason I wanted to set this project up this way. Not only does it better able folks to find relationships in a location, but it also gives me a parking place for specific resources to benefit everyone else in their research...I'd so often put a resource on a profile but it applied to multiple other people but unless someone had a reason to look at that specific profile it doesn't benefit anyone...this way it's sort of up there. For example see: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Anson_County%2C_North_Carolina%2C_Lockharts AND also http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Anson_County%2C_North_Carolina%2C_Surnames AND also: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Anson_County%2C_North_Carolina%2C_Genealogy_Resources Now it looks complex, but just let me know when you find something and I can set it up and add it...it's again just an infant but I really think that this will help researchers everywhere.

Please, those that are involved in the Category project, take a look at the above categories.  I started the cemetery break down, it's taken off to other regions around the world, but specifically here at WikiTree.  It will make this site the BEST ever start location in this world.  Thanks Chris.
