How to join the Slavic Roots project [closed]

The Slavic Roots Project became official in October of 2016.  Our purpose is to be an umbrella group and resource hub to the various projects supporting specific slavic peoples and to support smaller Slavic groups that might find it challenging establishing their own project space. Also - we aim to help those new to research in countries where Slavs predominate or who may not know much about their Slavic origins.

To join the group, please post a new answer here on this G2G thread, and we'll be sure to issue you a project badge.  Also, check out our project page for instructions on joining our mailing list.   You'll want to check our our sub-projects if you haven't already.  And if one doesn't yet exist that you think fits, we are happy to support you in developing it. Don't forget to follow Slavic Roots among your g2g tags!

Here's our project page:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Slavic_Roots

Also -- if you are already a member of one of the sub-projects and I've neglected to give you a badge (and you want one) -- do let me know, here or via a direct message.

Here's a general grouping of Slavic peoples:

* West Slavs: Czechs, Poles, Slovaks, Silesians, Moravians, Kashubians

* East Slavs:  Belarusians. Russians, Ukrainians

* South Slavs:  Bosniaks, Croats, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Serbs, Slovenes and Bulgarians

Who should join?  Anyone with any degree of Slavic heritage is welcome, as well as anyone interested in research on profiles with Slavic relevance, or in supporting such research.

Please make me a member. I also asked by pm for Ukrainian_roots, but figure it can't hurt to mention it here as well.

I would like to join this project as I have a great-grandmother whose father was an immigrant from Slovenia. Also, a 23andMe test that I took also says that I am about 5.7% Slovenian.

Thanks!

My in-laws  came from near Lwow/Lvov/Lviv when this was under Polish control between WW1 and WW2.  I am interested in joining the group but wonder where I should be looking for information - Polish and/or Ukrainian records?

I would like to join the Slavic Roots group as my heritage is 7/8 Slovak and 1/8 Bulgarian.  I have been helping with adding sources to profiles listed as Hungarian, Czech, Slovak as well as Austria when the name appears to actually be Slavic.

I already joined the Slavic Roots project and I am also a member of some of the sub category projects: the Jewish Roots, Russian Roots, Ukrainian Roots, and the Romanian Roots Projects and I still haven’t got my badges yet. Will you please give them to me as soon as possible. Also, I’m researching and making more profiles of all of the Russians on the Russian Roots so once I add the profiles in English, you can check all of the profiles and see if any of them are related to you.
by Living Mayer G2G1 (1.7k points)

Hi Hannah, The Slavic Roots project is the main badge for Russian Roots, Ukrainian Roots and Romanian Roots so you are covered for all three sub-project. I just awarded the Jewish Roots project badge for your profile. The project page for Jewish Roots is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Jewish_Roots

Hello!  Michael, your name is very familiar, so maybe I am already a member of this group...? I have Czech, Polish and Hungarian roots, but I am curious as to whether Hungarians fit into this category.  Their language is different, and I believe they are not considered ethnically Slavic, but Slovakia used to be part of the old Austro-Hungarian empire, and many Hungarian speakers still live there.

Should Hungary be included here, or do we need our own project??

Thanks so much!
by Jaki Erdoes G2G6 Mach 6 (66.4k points)
My understanding , as yours is that Hungarians are not Slavic.  It may be best for a group to be established to cover Hungarian Roots.
I am working on a Magyar Roots group, Michael. I will let everyone know via a G2G post when it's set.
Great!  I have done a bunch of research on my Hungarian ancestors, and so has my husband.
Wow, that's great Maggie -- thank you!

I'd be delighted to join.  Adding to and improving Russian, Ukrainian, and Baltic-German profiles on Wikitree is something I'd very much like to be involved in.

I suppose I ought to join the Slovak Roots project, as even my ancestors from the southeastern end of the Hungarian Plain were originally Slovaks... I'm really bad about categorizing and stickers and other WT frou-frou, though.
by J Palotay G2G6 Mach 8 (88.3k points)
J, I will get a Hungary project going after I get a "go" from the Project people.

I would love to join! My paternal great-grandfather came from what is now Slovakia, and my paternal grandmother's family came from Russia. My DNA test says I have Polish and Ukrainian but I'm still trying to figure that out.

Welcome Scott!  Do you have an area of interest (Russian, Polish, etc)?
My immediate interest is in the minority Croatian community in the Hungarian village of Kópháza, Sopron, Austria-Hungary - that’s where my maternal grandmother’s family came from, and I’ve only recently begun to make progress on that branch of my tree.  My wife also has Croatian roots in Croatia and Polish roots in Galicia.

Scott, we just started a sub-project for Hungary

Croatia sub-project is under Slavic Roots.

Galicia Project has a lot of information:

I have paternal and maternal ties to ancestors from Slovakia/Hungary. I am finding many surnames of these ancestors have Polish origin. Due to this, I am interested in joining this group and uncovering the ties between the Slavic and Polish people.

Thanks for being a member, Kaiden smiley

We don't have a badge for Hungary Roots yet. We just started the project. Let me if you need help finding records for your ancestors in Slovakia or Hungary.
