Sorry I am late posting this week's puzzle.  It has the theme of

Solar Eclipses

From Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse

As seen from the Earth, a solar eclipse is a type of eclipse that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks ("occults") the Sun. This can happen only at new moon when the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth in an alignment referred to as syzygy. In a total eclipse, the disk of the Sun is fully obscured by the Moon. In partial and annular eclipses, only part of the Sun is obscured.

Total solar eclipses are rare events. Although they occur somewhere on Earth every 18 months on average, it is estimated that they recur at any given place only once every 360 to 410 years, on average.  Since the Gregorian calendar was instituted in 1582, years that have had five solar eclipses were 1693, 1758, 1805, 1823, 1870, and 1935. The next occurrence will be 2206.

Total solar eclipse

Answers to the Puzzle will be Somehow Associated with a Solar Eclipse. None are before 1582.

  1.  A comet was named for this person who was also associated with a solar eclipse on May 3, 1715.
  2. Whose eclipse happened on Aug 5, 1766?
  3. June 16, 1806 had an eclipse named for this famous Native American.
  4. What US city has been in the path of 3 total solar eclipses in less than 100 years?
  5. What Pope was born and buried on a solar eclipse day?
  6. Whose important scientific theory of what was tested during a solar eclipse on May 29, 1919?
  7. What famous disaster was associated with a solar eclipse of April 17, 1912?
  8. Even though he never saw a total eclipse this German scientist was the first to scientifically comment on the corona.
  9. Who gave the name “corona” to the faint glow created during a solar eclipse?
  10. What royal couple were born on a solar and lunar eclipse day?
  11. Swedish King born on a solar eclipse.
  12. Who was President when the last total solar eclipse passed through the US?

I spent the week helping out different family members.  Babysat for my youngest granddaughter M, T, W and today.  She is 4 months old a little snuggle bum.  So much fun!

Yesterday was my oldest granddaughter's birthday.  She became truly a handful as she turned 5.  Part way through her birthday dinner she announced she would never see 4 again and soon she would be 6!  Time is looked at so differently the younger you are...

Yesterday I also took my 86 year old aunt on a bunch of errands.  So lots of family fun this week.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!
by Laura Bozzay G2G6 Pilot (838k points)
You have quite a lively family Laura.  I hope at 86 i'm doing errands, that's super.  Congrats on the grandkids too!

Cheers!
Yes and I love every minute of it!  But I am 63 going on 64.  My aunt who is 86 is truly amazing!  She is always ready to go when I call to see if she wants to do something...  loves to try different restaurants and go see different things.  Took her to a glass blower a few weeks ago and she was fascinated by what they could do.  She bought some lamp-work earrings and made a new friend with one of the shop owners who have been friends of ours for a while.  Judy (shop owner) said she thought my aunt was a lot of fun.  We think so too.

Well today I went to get my drug screen done for a new job that will possibly start Sep 18th. Got my car payment done! Yay! :)   Then finally got a response back from my recruiter for the new job that they WILL match my hourly pay as the same I have now. Whoo hoo! So I'll have a little extra coming my way even after paying for health insurance which I don't currently have.  Even luckier today was that I could still do a grocery pickup today despite waiting til later in the morning! Usually I have to wait til tomorrow to pick up.

Now I don't have to leave the house this weekend except maybe Sunday when mom and dad make it back home.  Plenty of time to squirrel around with sourcing more of my Isaac Shockey descendants, finish this last paid hour for a cousin of preserving her tree here on WT, Greeter duty, and on and on it'll go until the end of Sunday and I'll wonder if I actually accomplished anything at all. LOL

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Music for Monday ;) Total Eclipse of the Heart

by Charlotte Shockey G2G6 Pilot (985k points)
That's a good song to crank up... hard not to sing along (with intensity). I'm definitely guilty of singing along with things.

Congrats on the health insurance!

Warm wishes and good vibes your way Charlotte, enjoy the weekend :)
Thanks! :) And I grew on the singing with intensity to that song. Heard on the radio that she's on a cruise ship in the direct path of the Solar eclipse and when it happens is going to sing her son. LoL

Have a great weekend, too!! :)
Thanks for the music! Just hope you do not have to use the health insurance, but better to have insurance than not. Have a great weekend.
thanks and I agree on the insurance. :) Been without for too long.  You have a great weekend also! :)

So, eclipse-wise ... this is just funny.  Talked with my cousin earlier today, she's a bit older than me ... I know, it's hard to believe that anyone is older than me ... she's like 30 miles east of us, in Greeley.  I asked her what she was going to do for the eclipse ... "Going to watch it on TV" ... I love it!
by Bob Jewett G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
Bob I worked with a young man who used to greet me with Good Morning Miss Jurassic Period...    I am older than dirt it would seem!   (Yes he knew I was married but it just sounded funnier).   That is what happens when you get the privilege of working with a bunch of true creatives.  Of course this was the same young man who was going to pick up a new date in a brand new convertible he has just bought.  Driving down the highway feeling so good and looking so good behind an open truck.... a large canister bounced out, hit his car and opened up spilling pig blood all over him and his new car.  Never could get the stench out of it. Thankfully he was OK.  I used to respond with You know they say Tyrannosaurus had a keen sense of smell and I smell bacon... roar!  And we both laughed as did half the department who would often have some other funny thing to add.  I don't think he ever got to that date...   but he has a wonderful family and very sweet wife.

When the average person spends about 1/3 of their life working it is important to have some fun while you work hard!

TV is a great option for those outside of the viewing area and it is safe!
Wonderful Bob... her for saying that and you for citing it as humorous.

There certainly are some events and times when TV is the better way to go.

Good health and happy days to you both sir!
Great story Laura :)
Keith when you are older than dirt you have a lot of time to gather all kinds of stories!
My daughter, grandson and I are driving from the Raleigh area to somewhere near Columbia, SC, which will probably be totally crazy because it's the longest totality on the east coast. We'll probably avoid the main highways and do good ol' Rt. 1. I don't like to drive in lots of traffic, but since my daughter is heading back from an EPA conference in Baltimore by way of SE PA, she'll be pretty sick of driving. Hope all goes well for those venturing out for the eclipse. I'm missing the Team Trivia Regional Tournament because half my team is traveling. We'll get 'em in December...
I am happy to send you some trivia just for fun!  Drive carefully!   There was a book called Blue Highways... can't remember the author at the moment but it was guy who took all the state highways instead of the interstate highways and saw the "real" America as he put it.  Chronicled his travel with lively discussions about the various places he ate at too.  (something I am sure this crowd who seems to love food during the weekend chats would enjoy).
Sounds like an interesting book, Laura. I'll even be missing my usual Monday night trivia due to the eclipse. But my women's trivia group will play Wednesday. Major foodie here! Even had a restaurant for a few years. We have a pretty great food scene here. Just got a great deal on an Instant Pot and am loving it.

Running in and out all day and tomorrow as well. Our 16 year old granddaughter fractured her knee in a soccer game early last week but that is not slowing her down much. Today she went to work and we picked her up to take her to catch the bus for an away soccer game, she can not play but she is still on the team. We will pick her up later to take her home and then run her to work and back tomorrow.

Sorry to hear your granddaughter hurt her knee, kids do heal fast.

Well, this week, my youngest child got his learner's permit.  So guess what I will be doing over the next several months?  Yep, when not doing genealogy, I will be clutching any part of the car I can reach and stomping my foot on the floor board while teaching him how to drive.

Think happy thoughts for me :-)
by Emma MacBeath G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
A driving instructor I knew used to put a glass that was half full (or empty) into the cup holder.   If you slopped the water when stopping it was an immediate fail...   we really learned to ease on up to a stop!   He was also the football coach ... and driver ed teacher..
Uh oh!! LOL

And that is very interesting Laura.. and makes sense. :)
I love the water glass test for braking, Laura!  That football coach/driving instructor was creative.
Best of luck with the driving instructions! Been a lot of years since I taught our children to drive.

hehehe - gear up in protective full body equipment for your first ride just to see his reaction.  I'm laughing just thinking about it.

Hello and happy weekend, everyone!

I still haven't got back in the swing of things with my genealogy work. :(  After being sick for over 3 weeks, I broke down and went to the doctor - massive sinus infection, which explains why I've felt so lethargic. Now that I've got some good meds, I'm hoping to feel better quickly and get back to genealogy soon.

It's back to school for my kiddo this coming week, so we've been busy prepping for that.  We've had a fun summer, but I think she's ready to start seeing more of her friends on an almost daily basis again.

It's still so hot in Denver!  Ugh...I'm ready for autumn weather.  Its been in the 90s the past couple of days.

Not too much else going on in this neck of the woods for now.

Take care, and enjoy your day or evening!

My advice for this weekend: Don't forget to spend quality time with your living relatives.

While we all love genealogy and spend a lot of enjoyable time on WikiTree, you never know when you might lose a loved one.  I am thankful for the opportunity I had to attend my family reunion in Pennsylvania on July 22nd and spend time with those I love.

This post is in memory of my nephew, Tony Lutz, who died on August 3rd at the age of 31.

by Star Kline G2G6 Pilot (725k points)
Star, So sorry for your loss. Believe me when I say I know the pain. Please pass my condolences on to Tony's parents.

Bob
Sorry to hear about your nephew. I spent the last 5 days bonding with my 14-year-old grandson. We didn't do much of anything--none of the movies now playing tempted him--but we had fun anyway. And I even got him to eat decent breakfasts because I had time to cook them. Monday we're off for the Great Eclipse Adventure and the next day he starts high school at Triangle Math and Science Academy. I think he'll fit in well there.
Thank you for your kind words, Bob,

Sounds like you and your grandson had a great time together, Linda.
Ditto to what every one said even Star. Because we have an elderly lady across the street that we have known ever since we built and moved to our house in Loudon, TN for 22 years and they have found 4 fast growing tumors in her brain this week and she has started to have seizures with them and can't walk and will have to take therapy and they will not do anything to the turmors except let nature take its course with it. Also my dad is dying he has been in stage 4 kidney failure and taking kidney dyslais for it  for  3 times a week, also has vascular demetia that both things he has had for 4 years and they said with the vascular demetia that it like Alzhemiers that survivors live with it for at least 8 years but me and my mother and the neighbor has seen a very serious turn in him. He only til now would go to church on Sunday mornings but he has  a lot of problems that might be embarrassing for us, the church people and him. Plus he just sits and lies around and use a walker. He will not take walks. He just sits, eats and sleeps. He says his back hurts him all the time and doesn't even want to take a shower mom makes him take one and helps him. He is 85 years old it is hard to watch him go down that fast every day. We aren't going any where for the solor elcipse on Monday but my mom's first cousin that her age and his wife from Kingsport, Tennessee is coming down to our house to view it and he is my second cousin. Also my sister and her husband dog child since she  can't have children which is called Ollie was going to come down but she is sick with bronchitis and sore throat and we think she shouldn't come down and be around my dad with that. Also my sister in law isn't going to come because she will be in Pennsylvania for work that day but my brother which is from Kingsport, Tennessee also is coming too. So we are going to view it at my house.
So sorry for your families loss of Tony. Thoughts and prayers coming your way.
So sorry about your loss Star, how very sad.  Prayers and condolences to you and your family.

Don't think I posted about this after the reunion at the beginning of Jul but I along with some Shockey cousins put together a quilt to raffle at the reunion. The money went towards our Shockey Family Fellowship Inc to help pay for land in the Shockey name, etc.  I just remembered to add a full photo of the quilt along with the "group" photo of those who made it to the reunion. :)

Click to see page about the quilt! :)

I bet the quilt was a big hit and added to the Shockey Family Fellowship Inc. land fund. Where are the pictures of the quilt?

The link is in my "answer". :) I also posted the photo of the full quilt on G2G. :)
Wow Charlotte!!!!  This is gorgeous. i went to your page and took a look-see.  My sister does quilts (not by hand) and i have quite a few of them and I know how demanding and precise she likes to be. The winner of this quilt will cherish this FOREVER.
Welcome to the weekend chat and ditto to what everyone said about that quilt.
Thanks guys! :) I know I would have gone insane if I quilted by hand. LoL  This coming year's quilt I'll be piecing together but the only hand stitching I, myself, will be doing is the binding edge. :) LOL

Hello to all,

I joined Wiki about 3 months ago and I LOVE it.  I like the sharing aspect and that you can help anyone.  There are those who help you build your tree as well.  It is just so awesome.  I am so glad I found Wiki Tree.  I am working on pre 1500 certification and learning how to cite sources in a way acceptable to Wiki Tree. I have adopted a couple of profiles of my surname but not sure where they fit yet.   I was tickled to find connections on mom and dads side to all the Magna Carta Sureties and back to the Mayflower.

I love putting stories and the flesh and bones on ancestors and hope to become very active on Wiki Tree.
