Challenge of the week: Correct simple errors in reference tags [closed]

Hi WikiTreers,

Will you join our "Data Doctors" Challenge of the week?

This is an easy one to participate in, once you know how reference tags work, i.e.:

  1. A footnote needs to start with <ref> and end with </ref>.
  2. There needs to be a <references /> tag directly below the == Sources == headline for the footnotes to display.

Using these tags is naturally confusing for Newts. It's very frustrating for new members when a tag is missing or misplaced and they can't figure out why footnotes aren't appearing.

Once again, Aleš has come up with something incredibly helpful. He's prepared a report of profiles from around the tree where a reference tag appears to be misplaced. Click here for the list.

Can you help fix them?

The member with the most points at 11:59pm EDT on Sunday night will get the Winner badge this week and the bragging rights. But we'll all benefit from a neater, cleaner shared tree.

If you're participating, please post here to let us know. It's nice to cheer each other on. Or post if you have any questions about how to participate.

Thanks for helping!

Aleš got me. He posted it a half hour after I went to sleep. Updated. Enjoy.

omg - it is frightening to see what "creative" design possibilities are used in such a way for profiles....smiley

I have seen quite a few biographies created by a GEDCOM upload that have the messages about <references /> missing, as well as the >/ref> missing.  It sounds like there may be a problem with that process that may need to be looked at, so these messages are not being seen.

'This biography was auto-generated by a GEDCOM import'

Those imports probably date back to 2011.
I have found some that were imported in 2013 and 2015.  They have a <ref> after the initial info at the top, which is causing many of the issues that I am seeing.  This is one that I just fixed, but you can see the change dates, etc on it.

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:NetworkFeed&who=Brannan-158
Initial import was correct. error was introduced in edit in 2014. There is no pattern here.
Reviewing the Changes tab, I have seen that they removed too much info, including the end tag.

In doing more of them, I am seeing that some of the problems are also occurring because the 'references' tag is entered and later lines are using the 'ref' tag, so they do not work until the 'references' tag is moved after those items 'or' moving the 'ref' items above the 'references'.

Maybe that is another idea for a challenge, but hopefully, most will get resolved from this one.

You need to log in so that your WikiTree ID is visible. Right now only an IP shows. wink

Sorry Deb I didn't realise I was not signed in when I added this.

Hah,  you are in good company. Well, my company at any rate, whether that's good or bad company may be in the eye of the beholder. cheeky

Hey friends!  Maybe you can help me out.  The Status Button appears to be timing out and cannot be reached.  This is the error I keep getting "wikitree.sdms.si took too long to respond."  What can I do to correct this error?

Thanks in advance for your help. All the best,

Janet

Oh, goody—something "relatively" mindless. I'll participate. It's a nice break from cleaning imported GEDcoms.

Yes, I join in!  I won't be able to do very many but every little helps, right?

I will play for a change. :-)

I'm working on pre-1500 profiles ... doubt I'll rank anywhere near the folks who do this every week, but I'm glad to help where I can.

This week's challenge only has 3 vertical lines.

I cannot see and cannot CLICK ON the right hand side of these lines because the POST COMMENT message is overlapping them. Can anyone fix the webpage so that all of the clickable ref tags errors are accessible ? Thanks
by N Gauthier G2G6 Pilot (294k points)
nobody else sees it that way. Have you tried the spreadsheet?
I tried clicking on the spreadsheet once and nothing happened.

On a connectors web page,  I have seen 2 other messages posted about the comments covering up the webpage (including an image of the problem), Nothing was done to fix it there, so I thought I would try and see if anyone here was willing to look at it. Since some of us can't work on the pre1500 profiles, we need to be able to see the right hand side so that we can click through to the profiles ... otherwise we can't join in the challenge.
I see it that way too.  But I am 1500 certified, so I was not trying to click those cells.

I've noticed that there are some that have been marked several times and further investigation finds that some have went in afterwards and deleted the reference tags. I noticed that they had their own reference thing happening ie they typed 1. and put the source address but it was never attached to place in the profile where the information is. I have started just giving the profile managers a heads up and actually instead of just adding the <references/> tag, I've also moved the above mentioned 1. up to the actual facts and put <ref> </ref> tags. I'm just wondering if there is a policy on what should be done about repeats repairs.

Thanks.

I noticed this too. I replaced the tag which had been deleted. You can't really do much more except pm the PM and say why the tag is important.
