The Virginia Project covers the people, places, and events through time in the geographic region that we know today as Virginia. See the Virginia Project page for information on our scope of activity and some related projects.

If you are a WikiTree member who would like to help improve profiles and other WikiTree content in Virginia, please:

  1. Log In and introduce yourself by answering this post. (Please post an answer, not a comment.) Tell us about your interests in Virginia — and how you intend to contribute — and we will get you a US History badge.
  2. Add virginia to your followed tags.
  3. Apply to join our discussion email list and optionally join our project profile feed.
  4. Create a member entry for yourself on our project page.

Please be sure to check out our project page for links to the various related-projects you might want to join.  Note that several other specialized US-related projects, such as US Southern ColoniesUS Presidents, and the 1776 Project, have their own badges separate from this one.  You don't also need to join the Virginia project to participate in one of those projects, but most of us work on multiple topics and may want to be in more than one project.

Thank you!

Hello. I added a lot of profiles of my distant cousins on Ancestry. One group is the Cuffee family of Chesapeake, VA. They do historical stuff in a Facebook group and claim Ancestry back to the 1600s of a guy from Ghana whose son had a ship in Massachusetts. I’m just maybe a 3rd or 4th cousin -but they told me, and I just wrote it down so I wouldn’t forget. Another different family line I was trying to type was some folks on ‘Finding your Roots’ on PBS. I don’t know any of them. I match a black distant cousin’s family on AncestryDNA or 23andme. But that got me to try the GEDcom upload a few months back. That’s why I was asking about the African American sticker. We live in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

hello my son is related to the Cuffee and I also will be working on adding that family and information to their trees.

Hi.  That’s great. I also added a few more profiles to the tree during the July connect-athon that WikiTree had.  Thank you.

I ask to join this group as both my paternal (John Stevenson, 1618 (?) Great Britain- 1677 Lancaster, VA ) and maternal (James Mackgayhee (alias MacGregor) 1618 Scotland-1675 King William, VA) families originate from colonial Virgina. I hope I can find more earlier connections to John Stevenson as he is my brick wall back to GB. I have trees on Wikitree on both these families

Hi Don! The Virginia Project doesn't cover colonial Virginia - it picks up at 4 July 1776. Check out the US Southern Colonies Project - see its project page & welcome message.

If you'd like to join the Virginia Project also, could you post an answer (instead of a comment)?

Cheers, Liz

I would like to join the Virginia Project. I am a descendant of Bartholomew Owen an early settler in Surry County. My main interest and the focus of my research have been the Owen/Owens and related families that settled along the James River in the 1600’s—specifically in Surry and Henrico Counties. I have worked on genealogy almost daily the last 15 years but I have only recently begun transferring my research to new and existing profiles at WikiTree.

I am interested in the Virginia Project.  It seems like a very worthy project.  My ancestors have been in the Tug Valley of Central Appalachia for over 200 years and they emigrated from the New River Valley in Virginia.  I am especially interested in the immigration patterns from Virginia into Kentucky and West Virginia during the 18th - 19th centuries.  Please accept my request to join this project.  Thank you.

My father's side of the family has been in the country since the 1600's and early 1700's.  They were mostly in the Virginia and West Virginia areas.  I would love to join to help in any way possible and to learn more about Virginia and it's fabulous history.  My maiden name was Payne--I also have Wells, Belcher, Miller, Lynn and many more surnames in my history.  Thank you!

I am interested in the Virginia Project. I am a native Virginian descended from Claiborne Rothwell of Albemarle County, VA as well as Amburns, St Clairs Glasses and Mantiplys.  I lived in Southampton County the majority of my life before moving to SC, but while I was there I worked with the Southampton County Historical Society Cemetery Project. I have transcribed several African American cemeteries, Mt Horeb cemetery, a handful of family cemeteries and have taken pictures in many of the cemeteries throughout Southampton as well as Sussex Counties and the city of Suffolk. I would like to post these on the cemetery project, but may need a little guidance in doing so.

Thank you,

Natalie Padgett

I'll help, but mostly I need help. My family tree hits a wall with my 3rd great grandfather, Samuel Forbes, born in Virginia in 1776.  Any mentions of his possible parents appear to be due to wishful thinking.

One thing I have discovered:  "Virginia" in 1776 included modern-day Kentucky, which split off in 1792.  Since Samuel was married in Kentucky in 1798, perhaps he was born there?

We can work together.

I thought I answered this request to join the Virginia Project quite some time ago, but no Project Badge for Virginia has appeared or a US History one either. HELP!

Carolyn Whaley Vosburg

PS My Whaley ancestors were in Loudoun County, VA during the Rev. War as were my Allen clan. I'm still trying to find where these Whaleys originated before showing up in Fairfax/Loudoun.

We added you on October 4, 2019 and you have the U.S. History badge on your profile, I'll resend the welcome email with further instructions.

One of my ancestors was George "The Immigrant" Truitt - among the very early settlers and one of the earliest Quakers in Virginia. I would be very interested in joining this project.  I currently live in the area of Maryland where his family is buried and ended up settling.
by Leslie Wade G2G1 (1.3k points)
Your interest in Quakers and Viriginia will be helpful.

Hi,

My ancestor George "The Immigrant" Truitt landed in Virginia in about 1640.  He was a Quaker and donated land for, what is believed to be, the first Quaker Meeting House in Virginia. George is buried in Accomack, Virginia but most of his family moved to Somerset County, Maryland around 1720. Much of Somerset County is now Worcester County, Maryland and the family graves are in Parsons Cemetery in Salisbury, Maryland. I recently retired to Worcester County, Maryland and find myself living in the midst of my family's early history.
