Challenge of the week: Correct simple errors in reference tags [closed]

Hi WikiTreers,

Will you join our "Data Doctors" Challenge of the week?

This is an easy one to participate in, once you know how reference tags work, i.e.:

  1. A footnote needs to start with <ref> and end with </ref>.
  2. There needs to be a <references /> tag directly below the == Sources == headline for the footnotes to display.

Using these tags is naturally confusing for Newts. It's very frustrating for new members when a tag is missing or misplaced and they can't figure out why footnotes aren't appearing.

Once again, Aleš has come up with something incredibly helpful. He's prepared a report of profiles from around the tree where a reference tag appears to be misplaced. Click here for the list.

Can you help fix them?

The member with the most points at 11:59pm EDT on Sunday night will get the Winner badge this week and the bragging rights. But we'll all benefit from a neater, cleaner shared tree.

If you're participating, please post here to let us know. It's nice to cheer each other on. Or post if you have any questions about how to participate.

Thanks for helping!

The system isn't loading.  Admins... Please reset the system!

Good morning. It is back online.
I've used the <Ctl F> technique on <ref> and </ref>for a while - I also have used it on "name=xxx" to be sure I have the right references cross ref'ed.
If I have the time, I tend to

1. try to find an open source for the Ancestry material - in many cases it is on Family Search.

2. Add "Behind Ancestry.com paywall" to the souces and list those sources below that.

Too many "newbies" just cut and paste the timeline from Ancestry into the Biography section and add a source to that page.... It makes it difficult for those not able to log into their account or tree.

I haven't used the behind paywall but I guess I should. I try to put all the available information in the ref of biography. Here's a thought though, and maybe I should make it a separate question?

Why are we able to see records on Ancestry through the Rootsearch engine but not from other links pasted to Wikitree? And, is there a way to tie them so we can see those?
I saw another editor do that, and I liked the way it read since I do have an account at ancestry, but future members of my family might not want to spend that much money. I'm close to cutting my account down to the bare minimum since anything I want to use from there is already on other sites, including my own from other sources.

Having the info available on Ancestry is a good thing, and I don't begrudge them the fees for people who don't understand internet research, but lately, everything I want to see there costs additional money, and I have the full package - at least until renewal time.

The system is running nicely.  Thank you so much.

With the new Data Doctor videos I'm finding them really great and every week I learn how to do something new this week error 869 I'm trying to learn fingers crossed
I will also try to participate!
so... I get the winner badge? pretty please.  ;)

Is it just me the suggestions are not visable to me
by Helen Edwards G2G5 (5.8k points)

Click the link "Latest Report" for complete list then scroll down to References.  Once the system is working, I'm sure those will count towards this weeks challenge. They should at least. smiley

They aren't visable to me either and unable to set Status.

Still cant get the errors list
Fixed.

I was working on 868 1900-1999  but life has presented me with two new problems so I must quit.

I got through 4 sections although I skipped those in German and the two huge lists until I had a little experience.

Sorry but leaking plumbing and county issue just changed my priorities.

Good Luck

Just do the ones in the reference section for it to count.

I will try to help. Funny, I did some of these yesterday before I knew about this. They can be quite annoying when you are trying to read a profile. Good thing to work on!

Eowyn, I just found a profile of your's (and someone else's) on the list I'm working. I had a hard time finding the issue and realized that I saw the same thing yesterday on another profile. I may be wrong because I don't use this feature, but based on the kinds of mistakes I'm seeing, I think the issue may be the new enhanced editor. This is what I'm having to "fix" <ref name =“1900uscanc”>.  Is anyone else seeing this?  The profile is McDonald-4253

by Lisa Linn G2G6 Mach 9 (92.4k points)
Is the red arrow not showing up or just wasn't typed with no arrow at the end?

Red arrow is shown on changes page.

Lisa, I checked your changes

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=McDonald-4253&diff=prev&oldid=88445632

and you didn't correct the problem as you shoud.

Lisa, you didn't correct the problem.

You changed the closing tag, but you should actually retype the double quotes.

<ref name =“1900uscanc”>

should be changed to

<ref name ="1900uscanc">

Please watch the video for the suggestion. It is all explained. Click the button  Video  or this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9ZdKPKeygc&utm_source=wikitree_plus&utm_medium=suggestion&utm_campaign=data_doctors

Thank you Ales! So, <refname =“1900uscanc”  is incorrect and the ref> should go around the outside? I would not have understood that, and I should have watched the video prior to jumping in. blush Am I correct in thinking that is somehow part of the enhanced editor? If in the future, I see any with the enhanced editing, I will avoid them.

In fact, that may be something to consider for future challenges. I don't use the enhanced editor, as I don't want to learn that much code (I know it's not a lot) to work on my genealogy. For others like me, when we're working on these things, it not only could cause problems like you noted, but could scare people off from participating.

It has nothing to do with enhanced editor. It has to do with advanced inline citations. The new enhanced editor just make it much easyer to work, since it marks the ref tags and you see them instantly.

What makes an inline citation "advanced." I have inline citations on many profiles and have never needed anything other than the citation button and the formatting I've learned from other users and G2G. I also don't understand what the [[#S-1765924372]] means? It's not a link and the number doesn't reference anything discernable.

I'm not trying to be difficult, but I would like to understand. When I make the change as you suggest, this is what shows up: <ref name ="1900uscanc"> That doesn't appear to be correct either.

Lisa, You're not being difficult at all. I'm not even a year old on this sourcing inline citation business, understanding how WikiTree wants things done requires a lot of reading and jumping from page to page.  Personally, I don't feel it necessary to have to click on a help page then just when you think you found the answer, it wants you to click somewhere else to find it.  After a couple of times I had forgotten my question.

If a Suggestion has a video, watch and take notes or just keep it pulled up on a new tab for reference. Most of all the videos will tell you to go to the Suggestions list and pull up whatever else to fix.  However, nothing is loading at this time.  Keep smiling and have fun.  Thank you for your comments.
Thank you Paula, I sincerely appreciate your kind tone. I just sent off a response to a not very nice, lengthy message from a data doctor who didn't read everything here. At least it didn't appear that she had. We all make mistakes, and I try to learn and ask as many questions as I can for an answer. Sometimes, it's just not enough for the Wikigods. That's ok too, we can only do the best we can do. I do jump in too quickly sometimes, so that is my lesson for the week! Thanks again!
