American Revolutionary Patriot

1776 Project
Maj. John Gilbert Jr. served with 12th Regiment, Connecticut Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
John Gilbert Jr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A045123.

John was an Officer and Patriot for Connecticut towards the end of the American Revolutionary War.

John was a Lieutenant in the 3rd Company of the 12th Regiment (a Hebron Company), per the Revolutionary War Roll of Oct 1782. He was promoted to Captain of the same company, per the Revolutionary War Roll of May 1783.[9] John has a documented highest rank of Captain.[10][11]

Interestingly, many sources list his highest rank as Major, including his Massachusetts death record and gravestone; his son Charles’ gravestone, also at Lake Vale Cemetery in Belchertown, Massachusetts, states “son of Maj. John Gilbert and Millicent Goodrich”; US Census records from 1800 and 1810 both list Major John Gilbert as head of household in Belchertown, Massachusetts [12][13] He is also referenced to as “Major John Gilbert” in Cole’s “History of Tolland County”.[14] The military records to support the higher rank of Major are currently unsourced.

Research Notes

  • John Gilbert was known as John Gilbert, Jr. to differentiate him from his uncle, Lt. John Gilbert of Connecticut (1714-1794).
  • This is not the same person as John George Gilbert, b. 1749, who immigrated to the Colonies in 1761 (see "GERMAN IMMIGRANTS." In Dutch Fork Digest (Dutch Fork Chapter of the South Carolina Genealogical Society, Chapin, SC), vol. 7:3 (July-September 1992), pp. 75-79).
  • Hebron was in county Hartford until 1785. Hebron has since been in county Tolland, Connecticut.
  • DAR has a secondary marriage listed for John to “Amelia X”. Amelia was his wife’s middle name and there are no records sourced to support another marriage.
  • Family tradition had it that John was a major in the revolution. We have been able to find confirmation that he was a captain, but not for major. The 1800 Census lists “John Gelbert Maj.” in Belchertown, Massachusetts.
  • Family record in possession of descendant Ann Friend Clark; digital copy may be in the possession of collateral descendant Christopher Childs (Childs-1516)
  • History of Belchertown, Massachusetts: https://www.belchertown.org/residents/town_history/index.php
  • Not the same person as John Gilbert baptized 9 Jul 1750 to Eliezer Gilbert in Middletown, Connecticut.
  • He is not the same person as Major John Gilbert b. 1774.
  • Not the same person as Captain John Gilbert (1732-1776).
  • There is a John Gilbert with a rank of Sergeant under Capt. Joshua Phelps for Connecticut : Johnston, Henry P., ed.. Collections of the Connecticut Historical Society Revolution Rolls and Lists, 1775-1783. Vol. VIII. Hartford, CT, USA: Connecticut Historical Society, 1901, 1999.
  • This is the Patriot Ancestor whom Veronica Gilbert Newsom (Gilbert-14082) proved direct lineage from in application to join the NSDAR on 5 Oct 2021.
  • There appears to be no listing of this Patriot in the records of NSSAR.
