Biography

Elizabeth de Stafford was the 3rd daughter of Ralph de Stafford, 1st Earl of Stafford, by his second wife Margaret de Audley, suo jure Baroness Audley, only daughter and heir of Hugh de Audley, 1st Earl of Gloucester, by his wife Lady Margaret de Gaveston.[1]

She married (1) after 12 Mar 1346/7 Fulk le Strange, 3rd Baron Strange of Blackmere, (2) after 19 Oct 1349 John [de Ferrers], 4th Baron Ferrers of Chartley, and (3) c. 1367 as his first wife Reynold [de Cobham], 2nd Baron Cobham of Sterborough.

11 Mar 1346/1347: Indenture made between Sir Ralph, baron of Stafford and Sir John Lestraunge of Whitchirche testifying that it is agreed between them that Fouke, John’s son between now and Whitsuntide next shall marry Elizabeth, Ralph’s daughter (who was under the age of 13 years).[2]

In March 1346/1347 John le Strange was given license to grant Fulk and Elizabeth the manor of Wrokwardyn.[3]

Fulk le Strange died in 1349.[4][5]

She married John de Ferrers, son and heir of Robert de Ferrers, by Royal Licence dated 19 Oct 1349.[6][7]

She was recorded in Easter 49 Edward III [1375], concerning the presentation to the church of Broghton [presumably Broughton, Wiltshire].[8][9]

Richardson stated she died on 07 Aug 1376[10] but her Inquisition Post Mortem (see below) suggests it was 07 Aug 1375.

Inquisition Post Mortem of Elizabeth, late the wife of Reynold de Cobham, knight 1375

Inquisition Post Mortem of Elizabeth, late the wife of Reynold de Cobham, knight, following a Writ of 15 September, 49 Edward III [1375].[11]

She had held lands in Northamptonshire, Gloucestershire, Staffordshire, Salop, Wiltshire and Berkshire. She died on 7 August last [i.e. 07 Aug 1375].

Various lands she had held for life with Fulk Lestraunge, late her husband the son and heir of John Lestraunge [2nd Lord Strange] of Blakemere, Shropshire, or held by way of dower. Fulk and Elizabeth had no issue. The Inquisition was rather confused about the heir in theses cases but the Wiltshire entry appears to be the most accurate in that the heir was Elizabeth le Strange the granddaughter of John Lestraunge [4th Lord Strange], the brother of Fulk. The heir Elizabeth le Strange was described as aged one year on the feast of St. Nicholas last.

Other lands she had held jointly with John de Ferrers, formerly her husband. In these cases the heir was her son Robert de Ferrers, aged 17 or 18 years on 31 October last.

Her mother was only 14 years old when she was born? Doesn't sound right. Also shows she was married at the age of 8 years old to Fulk and 11 years old to John Ferrers. Something has gone awry in this tree. At least set the years as uncertain (since they are unlikely).

Reynold Cobham, married (1st) Elizabeth De Stafford. They had no issue. He married (2nd) 9 August 1380 Eleanor Mautravers, widow of John Arundel, 1st Lord Arundel, and daughter of John Mautravers, by his wife Gwenthlin. She was born about 1345. The had three sons, John, Reynold, [3rd Lord Cobham], and Thomas, and two daughters, Elizabeth, and Margaret (wife of Robert Rous, by which she became de jure Lady Mautravers. Sir Reynold Cobham, 2nd Lord Cobham, died testate 3 (or 6) July 1403. His widow, Eleanor, Lady Mautravers, died testate 12 Jan. 1404/5, and was buried with her 1st husband at Lewes Priory, Sussex.

Thank you!

Stafford-328 and Stafford-55 appear to represent the same person because: Still trying to clean this up - I updated -328 and they should be close to identical.

I'm looking into the problems & I'll rewrite the bio for you. There's only two people in the trusted list who are actually pre-1500 certified, if you are not I suggest you remove yourself since you can't edit this profile anyways.

Stafford-328 and Stafford-55 do not represent the same person because: Elizabeth Ferrers Stafford-55 dead in 1375 before Elizabeth Stafford-328 born 1382 - dont think they are the same person

Stafford-328 and Stafford-55 appear to represent the same person because: Removed -328 parents; I assumed the birth date was an error and went with the marriage to John Ferrers.

There is something fishy about the chronlogy/relationships on this profile.

Elizabeth (1342 - 1375) can not be married to Fulk Le Strange (Le Strange-90) (1331-1340) because he died before she was born.

If Elizabeth married (different) Fulk le Strange (Le Strange-162) (1331 - 1367) in 1347, it seems highly unlikely that she ALSO married John Ferrers (1331 - 1367) in 1349.

It also seems unlikely that she had a daughter Eleanor Le Strange (who is not the daughter of any of the THREE Fulk (le)Stranges she is married to in the same year (1357) she has a son Robert Ferrers.

I suspect that both the dates and the relationships are wrong.
