Biography

Sarah Learned was baptized St. Olave, Southwark, Surrey, England, 18 January 1606/7,[1] the daughter of William Learned and Goodeth Gillman.

Sarah first married, as his second wife, Thomas Ewer, (a tailor b. abt. 1595, d. 1638) at St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, Southwark, Surrey, England, on 13 January 1623/4.[2][3] She assumed the care of his first three children, and then her two with Thomas Ewer.

On the 19th of June in 1635, Sarah was listed with her husband, Thomas Ewer, a 40 year old tailor, and her children, "Elizabeth Ewer," aged 4, and "Tho[mas] Ewer," aged 1½, as passengers on the ship James that sailed for New England from London[4][5] They settled in Charlestown, Massachusetts.

In June of 1638, Thomas Ewer died, leaving Sarah with several young children. Second she married in Massachusetts, 11 December 1639 Thomas Lathrop, son of Rev. John Lathrop "My son Tho[mas] and Brother Larnett's daughter, widow Ewer, in the Bay" [The Bay refers to Boston][6], at Plymouth or Barnstable, Massachusetts.[7]

On June 7, 1642 Thomas Lathrop was sworn as the constable of Barnstable and again in 1665. Thomas was also a surveyor of highways there in 1642.

During this time in Barnstable, Sarah and Thomas began their family, having six children between 1640 and 1649 when their youngest child, Bethia was born. Sarah died several years later in 1652 Barnstable, Massachusetts.[citation needed]

In 1667 Thomas Lathrop and Shuball Linnitt were ordered to administer upon the estate of Thomas Ewer, son of Sarah Learned and Thomas Ewer the tailor, and were appointed guardians to Thomas Ewer's children.

Sarah and Thomas Lathrop's [son of the Reverend John Lathrop and Harriet/Hannah Howes who first settled in Boston in 1634 and who was selected to be the Minister of the Scituate Church] youngest child, Bethia, was born in 1649 in the colony of Massachusetts.

Bethia Lathrop married John Hinckley in July of 1668 in Barnstable, Massachusetts. John was the brother of Thomas Hinckley, the governor of Plymouth Colony. Bethia's first child was born in May of 1669 and her eleventh child was born 1692. In July of 1694 she died and was buried in Barnstable, Massachusetts. John remarried several years later in 1697 and Bethia's youngest children were raised and nurtured by his second wife, Mary.[8][9][10][11]

Research Notes

Not born in 1604; not at Ware. Merged profiles have shown a date of birth as 1604, unsourced. One profile reported, again unsourced, that she "was born September 30, 1604 in Bermondsey, Surrey, England. Sarah was the oldest of six children." Robert Charles Anderson noted (1995), "Some sources state that a Sarah 'Leonarde' baptized on 30 September 1604 at Ware, Hertfordshire, was the first daughter of the immigrant, but the date of this baptism precedes the only known marriage of William Learned by two years, and the surname in the Ware baptism is not one of the usual variants of Learned."[12]

Hi Lynn,

Welcome to WikiTree. Profile of Sarah (Learned) Lathrop (bef.1607-1652) is Project Protected (see the sticker to the right of her name), probably because the Puritan Great Migration team (PGM team) found collaborators made changes to the profile that had been previously considered but rejected or questioned.

I apologize in advance if the note that follows overlooks something, but this is my take.

In the case of your Sarah, Sarah (Learned) Lothrop (1607-1652), I see she you have attached a daughter, Hannah (Lothrop) Ewer (1642-1715) who is therein further the wife of Thomas Ewer (1633-1667)

Please then see Hannah (Unknown) Wing (abt.1635-abt.1720)--who married (1) Thomas Ewer (bef.1634-bef.1667) and (2) Daniel Wing Sr. (abt.1616-1698). Hannah's profile opens with a note, "Disputed Parents," emphasis added,

A previous profile merged into this [Hannah] incorrectly identified [the wife of] Daniel Wing in June 1666 as the daughter of Thomas Ewer and Sarah Learned. The only known basis for this claim is a footnote in Spooner, who cites no source.[1] The known children of Thomas and Sarah are listed in the Strood parish baptismal records, and do not include any Anna or Hannah.[2] As set forth below, the consensus among more recent scholarly research is that she was their daughter-in-law, widow of their son Thomas, and that her maiden name and origin are unknown.

See separately, Hannah (Laythorp) Lothrop (1642-abt.1715) for the profile comment, "She may be the Hannah Lothrop buried in the Lothrop Hill Cemetery who passed away in 1715, although there is (apparently) no gravetone or transcription extant, and her age at death is unknown.".

If you feel the note on Hannah (Unknown) Wing (abt.1635-abt.1720) (m. 1 Thomas Ewer) overlooks particular credible, reliable sources, then let's collaborate. Please discuss this on one of the Puritan Migration Project profiles, or start a G2G discussion, and tag it "PGM."

Again, welcome to WikiTree. --Gene
