Disputed Association

No historical support for son Peter Blossom. There is no historical support for associating Thomas and Sarah (Ewer) Blossom with a son Peter Blossom (abt.1650-abt.1700). A notion that they might have had such a son was posited in 1862, but is not followed in modern genealogies. This attached son probably never existed; the profile should be detached, and then probably merged away. See Research Notes.

Biography

Sarah Ewer was baptised at Strood, Kent, England, on 10 May 1629, the daughter of Thomas Ewer and Sarah Learned.[1][2]

Immigration

The names of Sarah's parents and younger siblings appear on the list dated 19 June 1635 of those enrolled for passage from London to New England aboard the James.[3][4] Sarah's name does not appear. Then little more than five years old, she nonetheless is presumed to have migrated to New England then or at some other point during the Great Migration.

At New England

Sarah's father died at Plymouth, between 5 June 1638 and 2 August 1638,[5] Her mother married again, "in the Bay," 11 December 1638, Thomas Lothrop,[6] the son of Rev. John Lothrop.[7]

Sarah married (1), by Edmond Freeman, in Barnstable, Massachusetts, 18 June 1645, Thomas Blossom.[8][9] He was born, probably Leiden, about 1623,[10] drowned "att the Harbour of Nocett," 22 April 1650,[11][12][13] son of Thomas Blossom and his wife, Anne Elsdon.[14] The parents, Thomas and Ann Blossom, immigrated from Leiden to Plymouth Colony, 1629, where the father died before 25 March 1633.[15] The younger Thomas Blossom was a secretary of Plymouth.[16]

An inventory of Thomas Blossom's estate was made 29 April 1650,[17][18] and shortly, 5 June 1650, widow Sarah Blossom was made administratrix. Sarah (Ewer) Blossom "made over £5 to their daughter, Sarah."[19][20][21]

Death

Sarah died before March 9, 1691-2 when receipts for legacies of her estate were to be paid after her death.[22]

Family

Child of Thomas and Sarah (Ewer) Blossom,

  1. Sarah Blossom, "her child that shee had by [Thomas Blossom]," and "whom she calleth Sara," probably born in Barnstable and "no older than four" in 1650.[23][24] See Research Notes.

Research Notes

Did Sarah (Ewer) Blossom marry (2) Nicholas Davis of Barnstable and Newport. [Summarize here comments regarding this conflicted claim.]

Nicholas Davis Other Identities. See related G2G, "A case of mistaken identity? (1638, Rhode Island).

Did daughter Sarah marry Rev. Thomas Walley? She is said to have "probably" married Walley. For details and sources, see John Insley Coddington and Maclean W. McLean, "The Blossom Family of Cambridgeshire, England, and New England," The American Genealogist, 63 (1988):65-77, 238-46, at 239; digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors. and Florence Harlow Barclay, "Blossom-Davis-Walley: Theories about Certain Early Plymouth Colony Relationships," The American Genealogist, 64 (1989):113-18, at 117; digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors.

Probably no son Peter Blossom. This claim is suspect, especially as some user contributed sites attach sources to this "son" that are about the Peter Blossom married to Sarah Bodfish. See FamilySearch FamilyTree, Peter Blossom PID LYW7-QDD, sources (January 2021). Peter Blossom (aft.1627-abt.1706) married Sarah (Bodfish) Blossom (abt.1638-1704) is otherwise reported a son of Thomas and Anne (Helsdon/Elsden) Blossom, thus the brother-in-law of Sarah (Ewer) Blossom. For details and sources, see John Insley Coddington and Maclean W. McLean, "The Blossom Family of Cambridgeshire, England, and New England," The American Genealogist, 63 (1988):65-77, 238-46, at 77, 239; digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors.

The notion that Thomas and Sarah (Ewer) Blossom had such a son was posited by Frederick Freeman, The History of Cape Cod: Annals of the Thirteen Towns of Barnstable County, 2 vols. (Boston : Printed for the author, 1860-62), 2:260n (entry of 1650, April 22); digital images, Hathi Trust, without further reference or comment explaining why this is "thought."

Possible 2nd, 3rd and 4th marriages: Sarah (Ewer) Blossom probably married (2) Nicholas Davis, the man by that name of Barnstable and Newport.[25][26] If, despite conflicting arguments, she is the woman who married Davis, then she married (3) Dr. John Clarke of Newport.[27] Sarah Davis married by April 20, 1676, Dr. John Clarke, of Newport, Rhode Island. [22]

Sarah's spouse, John Clarke, named many of her Davis children in his will.[22]

A Sarah Clark married Thomas Walley after July 1676. Their marriage took place within a short time after the two met.[28] Sarah was apparently mentioned in Thomas Walley's will.[29] No record of their marriage has yet been found. Based on her spouse, John Clarke dying in April 1676, it could have been possible for this marriage to be for this same Sarah.

Are there any vital records or similar documents that show the marriage of Sarah (Ewer) Blossom and Nicholas Davis? The 1989 TAG article (64) 113+ makes the hypothetical argument that they married, based on many other associations between the families, but concludes saying, "This is not a complete proof, but rather a demonstration that these families acted in ways consistent with these hypotheses. Those who wish to carry the investigation further should search the records of Bristol County, Massachusetts, and the records of the town of Bristol, now in Rhode Island."

Sarah's possible Davis and subsequent marriages are shown in the Research Notes section due to the current lack of conclusive sources tying Sarah (Ewer) Blossom to Nicholas Davis.

Sarah's husband, Thomas Blossom Jr. (abt.1623-1650), should be PGM.

If there are no objections, I will work to add details to the sources referenced, with a little help from Sharon.

Thank you.--Gene

Edited to add: Have completed updated the referenced sources, although there may be other relevant records in the public domain that should be added.

I hope to return to the profile to add a research notes section.

Edited again to add: Have added several more details and Research Notes. Have added a few public domain sources.

More work is needed to address conflicts and research notes, but an array of critical PGM reliable sources are now referenced in the narrative.

Hi Mike, and a welcome to WikiTree.

Hope to learn more from you about the two marriages--to Nicholas Davis and John Clarke.

There is a proposed merge in place between this profile (Ewer-7) and the duplicate profile, Sarah Ewer (1629-1692), created.

There are no reference notes on the duplicate profile, but based on the data on that profile (Ewer-352), 'am I correct in presuming you believe this Ewer-7 to be the Sarah/Mary who also married Nicholas Davis, and that she also married John Clarke.

Also, do you know if a profile of this John Clarke appears on WikiTree?

Further ever hopeful you might have a group of historical records that would be great additions to the associated profiles--Sarah Ewer, Thomas Blossom, Jr., Nicholas Davis and that of the proper John Clarke.

Thank you for supporting WikiTree.--Gene
