Biography

Phillip James was likely born between 1595 and 1605 in Hingham, Norfolk, England[1].

  • His age and place of birth are based on his family members, and his contemporaries. He was a member of a group of well-off inhabitants of Hingham, England, such as Francis James, James Buck and Matthew Cushing who founded Hingham, Massachusetts. For example, on May 2, 1638, these men shipped wheat aboard the Rebecca from Great Yarmouth to New England[2][1]. These same men travelled aboard the Diligent, and they were all among the first settlers of Hingham, Massachusetts Bay[1] [3]
  • Philip may have been the brother[4], or the son[1] of Francis James, who travelled with the same group and died in 1647.

Philip's wife was Jane[5] [1], some sources provide a maiden name of Davenport, and their children included:

  1. Ann, born circa 1629, who married John Turner Jr of Scituate, [6][1]
  2. Francis, born circa 1632, who married Elizabeth Hiland[1] [4]
  3. Jane, born circa 1634, who married John Adams[7] [1]
  4. Sarah, baptized March 13, 1636 in Hingham, Norfolk, England[8], who married Robert Parker of Barnstable[9][1]

Philip died in 1638, shortly after the family arrived in Hingham[1], however his family and estate participated in land grants until 1647[1]. He was buried High Street Cemetery Hingham, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, USA [10].

On February 14, 1640, his widow, Jane married George Russell[1] [5]. She died 22 February, 1688, at age 83[1] [5]

McInerney-57 and James-710 do not represent the same person because: James-710 lived in Norfolk from 1599. Phillip McInerney was married in Australia in 1909. Clearly not the same person.

TY Ann,

I will work on Francis James (abt.1600-abt.1647) to confirm and add the necessary immigration sources that would support he qualified for PGM. --Gene
